Practical Ways to Show Respect for a Friend

●Show respect for their life choices and decisions

Accept that people aren't always going to be just like you. They will make different life choices, have different views on politics and religion, and act differently in many ways. This doesn't mean they can't be your friend.{#blank#}1{#/blank#}.

●Trust your friends even if you have doubts

{#blank#}2{#/blank#}. If you're in doubt about something, ask your friend. Be respectful and give them the benefit of the doubt when you don't do. This alone will help you stay in their good graces (好感).

●Give friends your full attention

One of the best ways to show respect for someone is to listen to them fully. Allow them to pause, convey nonverbal communication clues, collect their thoughts, and get it all out. Too often friends listen with half an ear or jump in with an even worse story the minute their friend pauses.{#blank#}3{#/blank#}.When your friend is talking, pay attention.

Treat your friends respectfully when you argue with them. Make your friendship a safe place by not embarrassing your friend or expressing your private disagreements in front of other people. Be publicly supportive and kind to your friends so they know you value your friendship with them.

{#blank#}5{#/blank#}. So just show your friend the best kind of respect by being on time, keeping promises, and being the one friend that they can always count on. That's the way to truly show respect.

Our family went to the Yellow Stone National Park last summer vacation. Our son, Tom, wanted to see bears there. And what an experience it was!

When we got there, we put up our tent and went to explore（探险）. As we returned, we heard our daughter Susie cry out. And then we saw a bear go into our camp. 

Tom wanted his father to chase（追赶）him away. 

His father said, "No. It's dangerous to chase a bear. And don't let him chase you."

Susie said, "What shall we do? Maybe we should climb a tree."

Tom said, "No. We have to get him out of there. He might go to sleep in our tent."

"Maybe we could make him leave if we put some honey outside for him to eat." Susie suggested. 

Then I said, "How are you going to get the honey? It's in the tent."

We watched the bear go into the tent and heard him upset（翻倒）everything inside. 

"It's foolish for us to try to chase him away." said my husband, "Leave him alone and wait for him to come out."

We waited, but the bear stayed inside. We had to sleep in the car that night.

I'm Susie Green, a student at No. 3 Middle School in Shanghai. Ms. Liu is our math teacher. She is very nice. All the students like her. Heidi Smith is my good friend here. She enjoys reading books very much. And she is also good at singing and dancing. We love Chinese classical poetry(中国古诗) very much. So both of us join the Chinese club in our school and we want to talk about the poetry about autumn(秋天) next Friday.

What's more, the Chinese corner(汉语角) is also my favorite at school because I can practice my Chinese by communicating(交流) with other students there. We always have a great time telling interesting stories together.

That's my school life here. How interesting it is!

If I had a cold, I wouldn't think twice about telling my friends or my doctor. For some reason, however, if I had a mental（心理的）problem, I might not treat it in the same way.

At my elementary school, mental health was not discussed even once as far as I can remember. This makes me wonder how many other schools are failing to educate their students on this topic. It makes me sad that children growing up with mental illness may feel like it is something to be ashamed of（对……感到羞耻的）because it is never discussed. When I reached high school, mental health was still seldom discussed. But when it was in the topic of health or biology class, I was given a broad idea that mental illness was a "thing" that really lies.

In my opinion, overstressed high school students could benefit（获益）greatly from more deep discussions about how to deal with mental health problems, such as how to know when you should care about yourself or a friend, or who to reach out for help. I know my friends and I could have benefited. Even if you personally have never faced mental health problems, someone you know is sure to have, and you can offer timely help.

I also believe we need to normalize discussions about mental health at an early age, instead of hiding them from sight. At school, I saw a student's report on mental health education and how it can be carried out in the American school system. The student used the film Inside Out to explain feelings to younger kids. This report made me believe that it, is possible to start these discussions at a young age if we try.

Although we can't change the way people think about mental health over one night, there are still things we can do. Asking our friends how they're feeling is a good start.

①These days, a growing number of robots are invented to meet different needs and challenges, from doing difficult tasks in factories to providing support at home or school.

②Have you imagined a robot that can dance with you? Some educational robots can do that and they offer help in learning and problem-solving. In classrooms, these robots encourage students and bring them fun. At home, they can be the helpers for the students to improve creativity. For example, a NAO robot is a human-like robot with a cute face and two feet. It's about two-feet tall and can talk, move, and even dance. It helps students learn languages and programming.

③Some companion(陪伴) robots are able to help your grandparents live more happily. Among them, the robot named The Five should be one of the most excellent companion robots. It was made known to the public for the first time on September 24th, 2024. Different from other robots, The Five has got four legs with wheeled feet. Although its face looks small and strange, its powerful fingers enable it to lift an adult weighing 65 kg. It can help the elderly with many tasks including getting up, walking and carrying heavy objects. Although it hasn't been widely used yet, it has already been tested successfully in a nursing home. There is no doubt that The Five can bring much convenience(便利) to our life.

④However, there is still something robots can't do. For example, they don't have human feelings or creativity. Unable to think independently, they can only follow programmed instructions. Also, they are usually expensive to produce.

⑤As modern technology improves, robots will become more intelligent in the near future, and people will live an easier and more comfortable life.

 Creativity is the key to a bright future. Here is how schools and parents can help their children to develop their creativity.

 Drew worked for a company in 1925. At work, he invented a kind of material strong enough {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(hold) things together. But his boss told him not to think more about the idea. Drew didn't stop and finally, using his own time, made a kind of tape, which {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(use) now everywhere by many people. And his former(之前的) company learned from {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(it) mistakes. Now the company asked its workers to spend 15 percent of their work time just thinking about and {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(develop) new ideas.

 Creativity is not something one is born with. A person {#blank#}5{#/blank#} high intelligence(智力) does not mean that he uses it. Creativity is the matter of using your intelligence to creatively think of new ideas {#blank#}6{#/blank#} are good for something.

 Children from many schools can give correct answers, but they are unable to use them to work out problems. It is important to give children {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(choose). From the earliest age, children should learn to make decisions and understand their results. As children grow {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(old), parents should let their children decide how to use their time or spend their money, {#blank#}9{#/blank#} not help them too much if they make the wrong decision. The child may have {#blank#}10{#/blank#} hard time, but that is all right.
