Food waste is common in many schools. Students at Whitewater Middle School in the US once found 200 pounds (90. 7kg) of food had been thrown away after just one of their school's daily meals. They said it was both unpleasant and educational. 

A student said, "You don't realize how much food waste you're making till you see it. " To deal with this problem, Whitewater has added environmental science as a new school program this year. Teachers will lead students to do research about how food connects with the environment, poverty (贫穷) and people's health. 

Whitewater teachers make sure students know how their own eating habits are part of bigger problems. In environmental literature (文学) classes, students read books such as Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal. 

Teacher Lyman says that in language arts classes, students discuss why poor people often have less healthy food. Lyman says she wants students to ask themselves some basic questions: "What do we eat? What do we waste?

The world's first fully hydrogen-powered train (氢动力火车) line has officially begun running in Germany. The trains create very little pollution, just giving off water, which comes out as steam(水蒸气). They are {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(true) better for the environment than traditional trains. Besides, the trains make almost no noise. That's good for people both inside {#blank#}2{#/blank#}outside the train. We can believe that those trains will be much {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(popular) in the future.

A French company built Coradia iLint trains. On August 24th, 2022, the five hydrogen-powered trains {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(make) a 62-mile trip in Germany. The new trains are part of {#blank#}5{#/blank#}$93 million project by Regiona Transport Society of Lower Saxony (LNVG), LNVG {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(test)the hydrogen-powered trains since 

2018. It's a great success for LNVG {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(put) its trains into use.

There's a hydrogen station on the line to refuel (加燃料) the trains. But since the trains can go about 620 miles before they need more fuel, they only need to fill up once a day. The trains can go as fast {#blank#}8{#/blank#}90 mph — about the same as those traditional trains.

In many {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(country ), hydrogen-powered trains are a smart choice. The city of Frankfurt, Germany has already ordered the Coradia iLint trains. France and Italy have ordered several of {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(they). Germany is planning to use more hydrogen-powered trains instead of traditional ones. The new trains will lead a trend (趋势) of environmental protection.

Stefany Bibb is a teacher at a school. She runs the school's Kindness Team. Stefany started the team all by herself. She said, "Our Kindness Team {#blank#}1{#/blank#} made up of students in every grade. Every student can join it {#blank#}2{#/blank#} long as they want to be kind." Students in the Kindness Team often hold the door for others, and welcome other students and teachers every morning by showing pictures with positive(积极的) messages to help other students to remember to be kind. Aniyah, {#blank#}3{#/blank#} student from the Kindness Team, said, "My favorite act of kindness is giving hugs. I like to make people smile because it lights up my world and I know they feel warm inside, {#blank#}4{#/blank#}." "You can also show kindness to your teacher or others {#blank#}5{#/blank#} you're not even at school, and that's enjoyable," said Cox, a fourth-grader who is part of the Kindness Team.

Governments around the world are pushing for an end to plastic bags. More and more businesses are changing to paper products. Using paper is thought to be better than plastic. However, it is harmful to the environment, too.

Firstly, paper bags are made from trees. Trees, as you know, are good for the environment. They can slow down climate change. An increase in the use of paper bags can cause more deforestation(毁林).

Secondly, the production of paper things requires more energy and water. About 10 percent more energy and four times as much water are used to produce a paper bag than a plastic one. You might say that we can use recycled paper to save that energy and water. This seems to be a good idea. However, it takes even more energy and water to go through the recycling process than to make a new paper bag. Products made from recycled paper are also often short- lived.

Furthermore, paper products are heavier than plastic ones. That means they require more fuel to transport. Seven trucks are needed to transport two million paper bags, while only one truck is needed to transport the same number of plastic bags. The increased weight also leads to a larger amount of waste once the bags are thrown away.

So, paper products are actually a lose- lose result for both the environment and businesses. They are more expensive than plastic products. A paper straw costs about 5 to 12 cents, while a plastic one usually costs only about 2 cents.

In my opinion, the most environment- friendly way is to avoid single- use things altogether. Products like glass water bottles and steel straws can be used over and over again. They are much better than either paper products or plastic products. By increasing the use of these items, you can greatly reduce your throwaway waste and truly make our earth a greener place!
