It was last August. We were on vacation, having driven from our home in Washington, DC, to New Hampshire. We wouldn't see friends — it would be just me, my husband, and our two kids out for a nice week away. We had walked about half a mile to a popular place called Diana's Baths, near the town of North Conway, where the water falls off a series of flat large rocks. The baths were full of families, so we made our way to one of the upper levels of rock to keep our distance (距离).

Both where we sat and down below, the water fell into small pools, where kids in swimsuits were playing. I watched as some younger parents nervously asked their toddlers (学步的小孩) to keep away from the rocks' edges (边缘), feeling thankful that our kids, at six and eight, knew how to be careful. But I was still worried as I saw my two boys jump between the rocks.

"No running," I said again and again. "Stay away from all those edges."

But I soon relaxed, and we were all having fun, playing in the pools. My kids were laughing as my husband put his head under the running water. Then, seconds later, every fear I'd ever had rose to the surface.

I turned and saw my son Wyatt sitting down between two rocks in a fast-moving stream (小溪). I shouted at him to get out. He shouted back something that I couldn't hear, and then he disappeared over the edge.

My husband was already running down the rocks. I finally saw that Wyatt was sitting up — he was alive. My biggest fear was erased. As I held my younger son, Jed, close, I heard a woman shout. "That child just went over the waterfall! He fell on his back, straight onto the rocks."

It was about 12 feet from the top of the waterfall to the pool below.

After 21 years of marriage, my wife wanted me to take another woman out to dinner and a movie. It's hard to imagine that the other woman was my mother, who has been a widow for 19 years, but I am too busy to visit her often. That night I called to invite her to go out for dinner and a movie.

"What's wrong? Are you well?" she asked. My mother is the type of woman who suspect that a late night call or a surprise invitation is a sign of bad news.

"I thought that it would be pleasant to spend some time with you," I responded. "Just the two of us."

That Friday after work, as I drove over to pick her up, I was a bit nervous. When I arrived at her house, I noticed that she, too, seemed to be nervous about our date. She waited in the door with her coat on. She had curled her hair and was wearing the dress that she had worn to celebrate her last wedding anniversary. She smiled from a face that was as beautiful as an angel's.

"I told my friends that I was going to go out with my son, and they were impressed," she said, as she got into the car. "They can't wait to hear about our meeting."

We went to a restaurant that, although not elegant, was very nice and cozy. My mother took my arm as if she were the First Lady. After we sat down, I had to read the menu. Her eyes could only read large print. Halfway through the entries, I lifted my eyes and saw Mom sitting there staring at me with a smile on her lips.

"It was I who used to have to read the menu when you were small," she said.

"Then it's time you relax and let me return the favor," I responded.

During the dinner, we had an agreeable conversation—nothing extraordinary but catching up on recent events of each other's life. We talked so much that we missed the movie.

Paragraph 1:

As we arrived at her house later, she said, "I'll go out with you again, but only if you let me invite you," I agreed. …

Paragraph 2:

At that moment I understood the importance of saying, "I LOVE YOU." …

I went up to the roof for a break after studying for an hour and watched the 50 or so people swimming in the natural rock pool below our house. It was a sunny day-a blue, cloudless sky over a calm sea. But then, as I looked in the distance, I discovered a series of three or four big waves heading towards the shore. I'd seen the minitsunamis(海啸)many times before. They were heading at speed in the direction of the pool. Most people knew how to look out for them, but from the screams that started coming from the beach, I could tell someone was in trouble.

Without thinking, I ran down into the street, holding my toy boa(俯伏冲浪板)on the way and shouted at a stranger to go inside my house and call the coastgard. My neighbor Moises had heard the screaming as well and was also outside with his body board, so together we rushed to the steps that led down to the sea.

Once we got closer, we discovered the waves had pulled a boy and a girl from the pool and into the open sea. I knew that the nearest boat would take at least 30 minutes to reach us. Waiting for help wasn't a choice. I wasn't used to this sort of emergency-I'd never been trained as a lifeguard-but I didn't think twice about trying to save them. I supposed in a way I wanted to impress everyone: at 19, a deal like that can seem like a good opportunity to show off.

Moises and I dived into the water and it took us 10 minutes to get to them. When we finally reached them, they were almost lifeless with only their heads coming in and out of the water. We could tell they were still alive from their small breaths but it was clear they wouldn't have been able to stay there much longer. I hold the boy and pulled him over my board. Moises moved the girl on to his board. We discussed pushing them back to the shore, but we were too far out.

When I was nine, I needed to earn some money, so I asked Mr. Miceli, the newspaper publisher in my Chicago neighborhood, about an after-school paper route. He agreed only if I had a bicycle. My dad bought me a used bike, but right after that he fell ill and couldn't teach me to ride. Mr. Miceli, however, merely asked to see the bike. So I walked to his garage, showed it to him and got the job.

At first, I filled my delivery bag with rolled papers over the handlebars and walked my bike down the sidewalks. But pushing a bike with a load of papers was awkward; after a few days I borrowed Mom's two-wheeled shopping cart.

It took me longer to make my deliveries by cart, but I didn't mind. I sent each paper to its proper destination. In rain or snow, I put Dad's old raincoat over the cart to keep the papers dry. I got to meet everyone in the neighborhood—working-class people of Italian, German or Polish origins who were always kind to me.

When Dad returned from the hospital, he was too weak to restart his original job. Now we needed every penny we could raise to pay bills, so we sold the bike. Mr. Miceli must have known I wasn't using a bike, but he said nothing about it to me.

On the Thursday evening before Christmas, I rang my first customer's doorbell. Even though the lights were on, nobody answered, so I went on to the next house. No answer, nor did anyone respond at the next family on my route, or the one after.

I was very worried; I hadn't got the money for newspaper delivery this week. And while it was almost Christmas, I never thought that everyone would be out shopping. So I was very happy when, going up the walkway to Mr. Gordon's house, I heard music and voices. I rang the bell.

Mike licked the last of the mint chocolate chip ice cream. It was almost time to leave. He jumped into the car with his parents and headed off to the Olympic-sized pool for the big swim meet.

When his race came up, Mike was confident. He was strong and swift. Mike climbed out the pool, smiling. He had just won first place, making him the fastest boy in his age group.

"Congratulations, son, " his father said. His mom gave him a hug, even though he was soaking wet.

A week later, it was time for another swim meet. Like before, Mike decided to enjoy his favorite ice cream flavor. Mike remembered that the last time he had won a race, he also ate mint chocolate chip ice cream first. Maybe he'd win again.

He took first place again in his race. Mike was feeling pretty good. As it turned out, Mike decided to have mint chocolate chip ice cream before every one of the next few swim meets. He began to think of it as his lucky charm. After several mouths of placing in the top positions of every race he swam, Mike was feeling unbeatable. And he wouldn't admit it, but all that ice cream was adding a few pounds to his athletic swimmer's build.

It didn't take long after that for Mike to start coming in second place—and then third—and then last place in his races. The lucky mint chocolate chip ice cream had lost its magic.

On the day of his next swim meet, his mother sat down at the table with him. "Mike, we all love ice cream, bu it's not healthy for your body to eat so much of it. Maybe it's time to quit the sweet treats for a while, especially before you go swimming."

Mike unwillingly agreed. He went to the swim meet, and didn't perform well. His father offered to go running with him a few days a week to help him feel better and strengthen his muscles. The extra weight soon disappeared, and Mike found himself breathing easier at swim practices.

Paragraph 1:

It was the last meet of the season and Mike wasn't sure what to expect.

……

Paragraph 2

Finally came the end of the race.

I stared at myself in the mirror:blue tights, yellow vest, a fish tail trailing behind me, and large eyes siting at op my head. I raised my eyebrows and sighed.

"Mom, I don't think this costume is right, "I said. "Maybe the makeup will add something, "Mom replied hopefully.

Somehow Mom had convinced me to play the Fish Footman in Alice in Wonderland. I can't say it's been the time of my life

"What if I forget my lines?"I hesitated.

"Oh Riley, is that what you're afraid of?I know you've been rehearsing for two months, you were the first off-book in your scene, and I couldn't be prouder of you. "Mom said, kneeling down and hugging me.

The next day we pulled into the parking lot, and I stepped out of the car, wearing the questionable costume. I shrank inside myself, but Mom pulled me toward the makeup room. When the makeup was done, I looked at myself in the mirror. My jaw dropped.

"Mom!I can't go onstage like this!"I cried.

"Why not?"

"I'd be a laughing stock(笑柄)!"

"Riley, look around you! You're not the only one in an odd costume. "

"What if we just sneak out?No one will miss me. "I whispered.

Mom's lips disappeared into a thin line, and I knew I had gone too far. "Riley, I'm going to watch you go out on that stage tonight. And that's the end of it. "Then mom disappeared into the audience. I sat there, alone and bored, as the play began and the curtain rose on.

The two boys dressed as Two of Clubs(梅花2)near me chatted casually about this and that. Suddenly, they asked, "You're awfully quiet. Is this your first show?"I tried to respond, but my voice caught in my throat and refused to escape. I coughed and nearly yelled, "YES!" The Ace of Diamonds(方块 A)sitting nearby laughed. "The audience will certainly hear you if you talk that loud. But you might have to clear your throat first, "she chuckled. I gave them a weak smile.

"Don't worry about us, "the Ace said. "We're only teasing. "

"Yeah, "the Two said. "When you've done as many shows as we have, projecting will be second nature to you. "

注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右;

2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Paragraph 1:When my name was called, I stepped onto the stage uneasily:
