The city of the future

What will the city of the future look like? No one knows for sure, and making predictions {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(be) a risky business. But one thing is certain —they are going to get bigger before they get smaller. We will use lots of {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(recycle) materials, such as plastic aluminums, steel , glass ,wood and paper, and we will waste fewer {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(nature) resources. We will also have to rely more {#blank#}4{#/blank#}alternative energy, such as solar and wind power.

    A teacher at {#blank#}5{#/blank#} university in the United States asked his students to think {#blank#}6{#/blank#} they would run a city of 50,000 people in the year 2025. Here are some of the ideas they had:

    Garbage ships  To get rid of garbage problems, the city will load huge spaceships with waste materials and send them towards the sun,{#blank#}7{#/blank#} (prevent) landrills and environmental problems .

    Cars  All cars will be powered by electricity, solar energy or wind , and{#blank#}8{#/blank#}will be possible to change the color of cars at the flick of a switch.

    Telesurgery  Distance surgery will become common as doctors carry out operations from thousands of miles away, with each city {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(have) its own telesurgery outpatient clinic.

    Holiday at home  Senior citizens and people with disabilities will be able to go anywhere in the world using high-tech cameras {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(attach) to their head.

    Every year on the last weekend in August around 1.5 million people go to west London to take part in and enjoy one of the {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (large) street parties in Europe, Notting Hill Carnival.{#blank#}2{#/blank#} a colorful group of dancers, a wide range of music and {#blank#}3{#/blank#} atmosphere of fun and celebration, the carnival is not to be missed. The roots of the carnival date back to 1833 {#blank#}4{#/blank#} slavery was abolished. In that year the former slaves in Trinidad, a British colony in the Caribbean, took to the streets in celebration of their own carnival party with music, dance and costumes. Soon it {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (develop) into an important tradition throughout the Caribbean. In 1959 the first carnival took place in the St Pancras area of London. For the next few years, the Carnival _{#blank#}6{#/blank#}(celebrate) in different parts of London until it{#blank#}7{#/blank#}(final) came to Notting Hill in 1964. In 2003 the Notting Hill Carnival received royal {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(approve),when it joined the parade {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(mark) the Queen's 50th year on the throne(王位). The Carnival shows the {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(culture) diversity of modern London.

    On our way to the house, it was raining {#blank#}1{#/blank#} hard that we couldn't help wondering how long it would take {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(get) there. It was in the middle of Pearl City.

    We were first greeted with the barking by a pack {#blank#}3{#/blank#} dogs, seven to be exact. They were well trained by their masters {#blank#}4{#/blank#} had great experience with caring for these animals. Our hosts shared many of their experiences and {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(recommend) wonderful places to eat, shop, and visit. For breakfast, we were able to eat papaya(木瓜) and other fruits from their trees in the backyard.

    When they were free from work, they invited us to local events and let us know of an interesting {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(compete) to watch, together with the story behind it. They also shared with us many {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(tradition) stories about Hawaii that were {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(huge) popular with tourists. On the last day of our week-long stay, we {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(invite) to attend a private concert on a beautiful farm on the North Shore under the stars, {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(listen) to musicians and meeting interesting locals.

    Everyone has dreams, but not all dreams can be realized. People give up their dreams for this or that reason. Those {#blank#}1{#/blank#} dreams become true have one thing in common, that is, they insist on {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (work) for their dreams.

    Marie Curie, a famous scientist, has set {#blank#}3{#/blank#} good example. In 1898, Marie {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (find) a new element (元素) in the pitchblende (沥青铀矿). {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (prove) her discovery, she had to show it to the world, which also became her dream. After using tons of pitchblende, Marie and her husband {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (final) saw the blue light of radium (镭). There are many other examples. Athletes who gain gold medals and students who enter key universities after {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (year) of hard work, are all dream-holders.

    The path to dreams may not be smooth and the progress may be {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(pain). But hold on to your dreams, no matter {#blank#}9{#/blank#} big or small they are. Hold on to the end, and you will find there is nothing {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (happy) than your dreams coming true.

    How to prevent being infected with the virus? There are a number of standard hygiene (卫生) practices {#blank#}1{#/blank#} have been recommended to protect against infection and {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (far) spread. These include covering your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing with a medical mask, tissue or flexed elbow; avoiding contacting with those who are unwell {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (close); the appropriate use of masks and personal protective {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (equip), especially in a healthcare setting; washing hands regularly with water and soap, {#blank#}5{#/blank#} alcohol-based hand sanitizer (洗手液). {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (action) that can be taken to prevent infection from an animal source include: avoiding unnecessary unprotected contact with animals; washing hands after contact with animals or animal products; and ensuring that animal products are cooked thoroughly before they {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (consume).
