Sports in ancient China

People in ancient China worked long hours each day. To relax, they  {#blank#}1{#/blank#}   (invent) many games. Some of them had a long history.

 Chuiwan 捶丸

Chuiwan was one of the ball games in ancient China, which was very popular in the Song Dynasty. "Chui" means "hit"{#blank#}2{#/blank#} "wan" means "ball" . This sport was similar to golf. On a large field, the players were divided into two groups. Usually there were 2 to 10 people in each group. They used a stick{#blank#}3{#/blank#} (hit) the ball into holes. Only when three hits into the hole were achieved did the player win the point{#blank#}4{#/blank#} (successful).

 Cuju 蹴鞠

First recorded 2,000 years ago, cuju is known as the  {#blank#}5{#/blank#}  (early) form

of football. The ball was made  {#blank#}6{#/blank#}  leather (毛皮) on the outside and filled

with rice bran (米糠) inside.{#blank#}7{#/blank#} (it) rules were similar to football's. Each

team usually had 12 or 16 players. No hands were allowed. Only  {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (foot)

and heads could be used. The ball should be hit into the opposite goal.

Archery 射箭

In the Western Zhou Dynasty, archery was {#blank#}9{#/blank#}important part of education for a gentleman. At the age of 15, they began learning shooting. The most famous competition was Grand Archery. It{#blank#}10{#/blank#}(hold) by the emperor. The competitors bowed before shooting and drank together after.

Birch is a great pianist. His music is welcomed all over the world. Every year, he holds many concerts in different cities. But a ticket to his shows is always hard to get. 

This year, Birch will have a concert in the city of Flint, Michigan. Birch spends lots of time preparing for it — he knows lots of his fans will come and enjoy his performance (表演) , and he won't like to let them down. 

The big moment finally comes. Birch comes into the hall happily, wearing a smile as usual—he will meet his music lovers soon. Suddenly, he stops and his smile is gone. There are still lots of seats left, and the audience (观众) are fewer than half! 

Standing there, Birch is so disappointed. Isn't his performance so popular in this city? 

Just after a short while, Birch walks to the front of the stage and says to the audience smilingly, "Oh, your Flint City people are so different! I see each of you buy two seats. I now know how rich (富有的) you are!"

On hearing this, all the people laugh with a thundering applause (掌声雷动). 

I was lonely when I was in high school because I went to a new school far away from my home. In the beginning, some naughty students often laughed at me because of my poor English, so I always tried to avoid them.

Soon I went to university. I was a poor student and I only had $20 for two weeks. I had to hide the truth carefully because I was afraid to be laughed at again. I ate little every day. One day, Joe, a classmate of mine, invited me to help him cook and then shared the completed dishes with him. Since I was not familiar（熟悉）with him, I refused him at first. But after some consideration, I decided to go. I used to cook at home, and I thought I could do it, but I was still full of worry. If he didn't like my cooking, what should I do? Later, it turned out to be a success. Then Joe wished me to make it a daily routine. It went like this. He did the shopping and I did the cooking. And then I stayed to have dinner with him.

It was not until graduation that I knew the whole story. Joe discovered my situation two years ago. In order not to hurt my pride, he came up with this idea just to make it much easier for me. When I cooked the last meal for him, I ordered a big cake and said to him with tears, "My dear friend, you and your help really brighten my college life. I'll never forget that."

Hello, my name is Li Hui. Hui is my first name, so you can 1 me Xiaohui. I am 2 . I come from China. I am 3 Shanghai now. Tom is my good friend. He is not Chinese. He is 4 English boy. But now he is in Shanghai, 5 his parents work here. He is thirteen, so he is younger than me. His English name is Tom, and his Chinese name is Dalin. We are both in 6 Grade Seven in No.6 Middle School. And both of us like 7 basketball. We often play it with our classmates after class. We can play basketball 8 . Yao Ming 9 our favorite basketball star. Mr. Li is my favorite teacher. He teaches 10 math. I like math and P. E.

I like traveling alone. I have been to the Terracotta（兵马俑）, Disneyland and the Bird's Nest（鸟巢）. Attracted(吸引) by the beauty of the Great Wall, I flew there by myself this time.

At the entrance (入口), one short old woman followed me all the time. She wanted me to buy some cards. Finally, I became angry. "Don't you understand the meaning of ‘No'?" I shouted at her and left.

As soon as I walked along the Great Wall, I felt very excited. Then, when I was halfway, I found I was on a very dangerous road, and there were no walls. When the cold wind came, I was afraid. Suddenly, I heard a soft voice behind. Someone told me not to be afraid and she would help me. As I felt a pair of hands trying to keep me safe, I calm down(镇静).

Half an hour later, we arrived at a safer place. Feeling better, I turned around to see who she was. She was the short old woman. I felt humiliated for what I did and gave her a big hug (拥抱).

Through this experience, I learned that we should be kind to others because we never know what situation we'll be in and when we'll need help.

I would like to introduce my life to you. I live in a beautiful town. It has many {#blank#}1{#/blank#} places. Here are some of {#blank#}2{#/blank#}.

There is a movie theater, a pool and two {#blank#}3{#/blank#} in my town. You can see some children in the parks. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} fact, they love to run around there. The old people love to exercise there. Young people enjoy {#blank#}5{#/blank#} a movie, so they often go to the movie theater. If you like to swim, you can go to the pool with your parents {#blank#}6{#/blank#}. You will have a good time playing in the water.

You can find a library in my town. The library is very big and there are a lot of {#blank#}7{#/blank#} in it. I like reading {#blank#}8{#/blank#} the library is my favorite place. I often {#blank#}9{#/blank#} there on weekends.

There are many restaurants in my town. I love to eat something spicy, so {#blank#}10{#/blank#} favorite one is the Indian restaurant. My family would like to have dinner in a Chinese restaurant.
