2016年江苏省常州市中考英语真题试卷

阅读下列短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

When was the last time you saw three men running down a forest trail(小径)in the rain wearing flip-flops(拖鞋)?That's what my friend Brandon, Josh and I were doing last autumn. We were looking for a waterfall(瀑布).We didn't have much time to get to the waterfall and back, so we were running. We were wearing flip-flops to prevent our shoes getting dirty.

It was raining, but lightly. It kept us cool as we climbed over giant stones and through a shallow(浅的)stream. We followed red arrows(箭头)and crossed that stream several times, walking on toward the promised waterfall. Time was not on our side, however, and we were forced to turn around. As we started back, we looked at the shallow stream we had just crossed. Where did this rushing river come from? That was when we realized a flash flood was around!

In the few minutes the water rose at a fast speed. Now there were no big stones to be seen-only what looked like lumps(隆起)covered with rushing water. We had no choice but to move our way back carefully in the rushing water -in flip-flops. We had crossed the stream not once or twice, but six times in search of a waterfall that we never even reached!

With most of the crossings, we needed each other's help if we didn't want to be washed away by water. Wet all over, we felt relaxed after we made the last crossing.

"My dad always told me to keep off a river when travelling in the rain." Josh said as we hurried back down the path.

"Why didn't you tell us that earlier?" I laughed.

"Would it have made a difference?" came the reply.

    He had a point.

(1)、Why were there no big stones to be seen in the stream when they came back?
A、The big stones were moved away by someone else. B、They were running too fast to notice the big stones. C、The big stones were covered with rushing water. D、The big stones were washed away by rushing water.
(2)、Why didn't they find the waterfall in the end?
A、Because they were short of time. B、Because they were wearing flip-flops. C、Because Josh kept warning them not to go any further. D、Because the flood prevented them from going forward.
(3)、We can infer(推断)from the passage that the writer and his friends_______.
A、were crazy about outdoor activities B、made full preparations before the trip C、crossed rushing water easily in the end D、had much experience in travelling in the rain

Georgy lived a hard life with his mother Amelia Sedley. He studied in a little local school and did well at all his lessons. Miss Dobbin, Georgy's teacher, followed his progress with interest, and was ready to be helpful and knew how poor the Sedley s were.

"Do let Georgy spend the day with me next Saturday," Miss Dobbin said to Amelia one day. "Miss Osborne, Georgy's aunt, is coming to visit, and I know she'd love to see her brother's son. And who knows, perhaps the boy's grandfather will do something for him one day."

The meeting took place and Miss Osborne liked Georgy a lot. After the meeting, while having dinner at the dinner table with her father that night, Miss Osborne could not hide here motion.

"What's the matter?" old Mr. Osborne shouted at last. Georgy's aunt burst into tears. "Oh sir," she said, "I've seen little Georgy. He's such a beautiful boy—and so like his father!"

The old man did not say a word, but his hands trembled(颤抖), and he sat staring at the table for a long time.

Soon Georgy told his mother about another visitor at the house on a day he spent with Miss Dobbin. "An old gentle nan came today," the boy said. "He watched when I had my riding son. He stared and stared at me.

Amelia knew that the boy had seen his grandfather, and she waited nervously to see what would happen next. After several days, a lawyer came with a letter from Mr. Osborne. "Mr. Osborne offers to take his grandson Georgy, who will then inherit (继承) the fortune (巨款) which would have gone to his father. He will also give Mrs. Amelia Osborne a regular allowance (补贴) to enable her and her family to live in comfort. If she marries again, as is said to be likely, this allowance will still continue. In return, the boy will live with Mr. Osborne, who will allow him to visit his mother once or twice in her own home."

Amelia was rarely angry, but today she stood up, to re this letter into a hundred pieces, and threw them on the floor.

"Marry again! Take money—to part from my child! Who dares to hurt me in this way? Tell Mr. Osborne it is a ridiculous (荒唐的) letter. I will not answer it. Good day, sir!"

You must have heard of the legend (传说) of Yu Gong, who tried to move two mountains. The Taihang Mountain was one of the two mountains.

The Taihang Mountain passes through the areas of Hebei, Shanxi, Henan and Beijing. It is about 400 kilometers long. It is one of the largest mountain ranges in North China, and it was called "the backbone (脊梁) of China" in ancient times.

Many legends about the beginning of human civilization (文明) come from the Taihang area. For example, Nvwa used stones to repair the sky to make sure that humans would have a better future; Houyi protected everyone by shooting the suns.

The Taihang Mountain is not only where the ancient stories happened, but also a place where tens of thousands of fossils (化石) were found. These fossils show how the earth has changed over time. At the same time, we can also learn about how ancient humans lived from the discoveries around the area.

Nowadays, there are natural forests around the area with beautiful colors in four seasons. In spring, the trees of Taihang Mountain will grow green leaves. In summer, the trees will grow luxuriant (挺拔的) and leaves will cover the sun. In autumn, the trees in Taihang Mountain are tall and leaves turn yellow. In winter, the trees are covered with snow, like a thick white coat. You can go there whenever you want because it is beautiful all year round.

If you want to learn different things about history, culture and other important knowledge, you can come to the Taihang Mountain and feel its greatness.
