In the past few years, online learning has become a significant part of the university and college experience.  But are all online courses created equal? How can you be sure that digital learning is right for you?

We interviewed students and professors to get their advice about online courses, The most obvious advantage of online learning is that you can study anywhere and anytime. "I think a point that many people lose sight of is how easy it can be to fall behind schedule, " says graduate student Amanda Bindman. Before choosing to study online, consider whether you're a self-motivated learner and if the material seems interesting enough to keep you going.

The tip that comes up most often is simple: build online courses into your weekly schedule, just like what you would do with in person courses.  He noted that his online students usually end up with lower grades. It is so easy to let an online course slide, but your grades will suffer as a result. Be sure to schedule set times to watch your lectures, read materials and contribute to online discussion boards.

A social connection is often a big part of learning. There are things you can do to ease this problem. Jessica Pink an undergraduate student, suggests taking online courses with a friend, so you can motivate each other to stay on track. You can also find students on the class discussion board to organize a study group, or schedule in-person meeting s with your professor to discuss course concepts.

A. But that doesn't mean there aren't deadlines.

B. Your motivation should be your main concern.

C. Do you know that online courses are also part of your education?

D. Professor Alex Davidson teaches the same course in person and online.

E. The chief complain t about online courses is that they lack human interaction.

F. If you take an online course, what can you do to ensure the best possible grade?

G. A survey found that 29 percent of college students registered for online courses.

Superfast doubledecker (双层) trains will be taking passengers from London to six big cities in the UK by 2033. The first phase (阶段) linking London to the West Midlands with a connection to HS1 is expected to open in 2026, and the second  phase to Manchester and Leeds in 2032.

The government set out a plan for the highspeed rail network in 2012. When the project is finished, it will take less time to get to London from major cities like Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds. Traveling at a speed of up to 250 mph, passengers will be able to come and go from Birmingham to London in 49 minutes, reducing the journey time by almost half from one hour and 24 minutes.

A journey from Birmingham to Leeds will be reduced from two hours to 57 minutes and a journey from Manchester to London will be reduced from two hours and 8 minutes to one hour and 8 minutes.

“HS2  is an  important  part of transport's  lowcarbon future,” Transport  Secretary Justine Greening said. Some people aren't happy about the plan, though. HS2 will cost around £33 billion. It will also be built near some towns and villages, disturbing the people that live there.

But the Chancellor of the Exchequer (财政大臣) George Osborne thinks it will help build the future for Britain. “It's a longterm decision,” he said.

HS2 is designed for everything around the needs of the passengers. It will provide a new and exciting travel experience. There will be plenty of room, intelligent ticketing, a good service and high quality comfort and access to trains. This is a transport network for the new century and beyond.

Language learning begins with listening. Children are greatly different in the amount of listening they do before they start speaking, and later starters are often long listeners. Most children will “obey” spoken instructions some time before they can speak, though the word “obey” is hardly accurate as a description of the eager and delighted cooperation usually shown by the child. Before they can speak, many children will also ask questions by gesture and by making questioning noises.

Any attempt to study the development from the noises babies make to their first spoken words leads to considerable difficulties. It is agreed that they enjoy making noises, and that during the first few months one or two noises sort themselves as particularly expressive as delight, pain, friendliness, and so on. But since these can't be said to show the baby's intention to communicate, they can hardly be regarded as early forms of language. It is agreed, too, that from about three months they play with sounds for enjoyment, and that by six months they are able to add new words to their store. This self-imitation leads on to deliberate imitation of sounds made or words spoken to them by other people. The problem then arises as to the point at which one can say that these imitations can be considered as speech.

It is a problem we need to get our teeth into. The meaning of a word depends on what a particular person means by it in a particular situation and it is clear that what a child means by a word will change as he gains more experience of the world. Thus the use at seven months of “mama” as a greeting for his mother cannot be dismissed as a meaningless sound simply because he also uses it at other times for his father, his dog, or anything else he likes. Playful and meaningless imitation of what other people say continues after the child has begun to speak for himself. I doubt, however, whether anything is gained when parents take advantage of this ability in an attempt to teach new sounds.

There are lots of insects that farmers hate. But there also are some they like. They protect crops against damage from other insects. A good example is the lady beetle, which is also known as the ladybug(瓢虫).

Lady beetles are a natural control for aphids(蚜虫). Lady beetles are red, orange or black. They often have black spots, though some have light colored spots. Different kinds of lady beetles have different numbers of spots. There are lady beetles with four, five, seven and fourteen spots.

Many of the well-known kinds of lady beetles come from Asia or Europe. They now are common throughout the United States.

American scientists imported one kind of lady beetle, the multicolored Asian lady beetle, as early as 1916. They released them as an attempt to control some kinds of insects. Over the years, the beetle has become established, possibly helped by some that arrived with imported plants on ships.

Experts say over 450 kinds of lady beetles are found in North America. Some are native to the area. Others have been brought from other places. Almost all are helpful to farmers.

The Asian lady beetles now in the United States probably came from Japan. The Asian lady beetle eats aphids that damage crops like soybeans, fruits and berries.

In the southern United States, Asian lady beetles have reduced the need for farmers to use reskilling poisons on pecan trees. This popular tree nut suffers from aphids and other pests that the lady beetles eat.

But some people say the Asian lady beetle has itself become a pest. They worry that the lady beetles may eat their late autumn fruit crops.

Experts say Asian lady beetles may appear in large numbers in some years. But they say the insects are too helpful to be considered as pests.

Dear Customers,

I love slipping into a comfortable chair for a long read-as I relax into the chair; I also relax into the author's words, stories and ideas. The physical book is so elegant that it disappears into the background and what remains is the author's world.

Today, we, at Amazon, are excited to announce Mindle, a wireless, portable reading device with instant access to more than 90, 000 books, magazines and newspapers.

We've been working on Mindle for more than three years. Our top design goal was for Mindle to disappear in your hands―to get out of the way-so you can enjoy your reading, also wanted to go beyond the physical book. Mindle is wireless, so whether you're lying in bed or riding a train, you can think of a book and have it in less than 60 seconds. No computer is needed-you do your reading directly from the device.

We chose the same wireless technology used in advanced mobile phones. But unlike phones there are no monthly wireless bills, no service or data plans, and no yearly contracts. There is no software to install. We want you to get lost in your reading and not in the technology.

Mindle uses a new kind of display called electronic paper. Sharp and natural with no strong light reading on Mindle is nothing like reading from a computer screen. Mindle weighs only 10.3 ounces-less than a paperback, but can carry two hundred books.

Enjoy learning about Mindle and many thanks!

Kids and Food: Advice for Parents

It is important for parents to know how to help their kids eat healthy. Here are a few easy ways:

Parents control the supply lines. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Though kids may keep asking for less nutritious foods, parents should decide which foods are regularly provided in the house. Kids won't go hungry. They'll eat what's available in the fridge at home.

Say goodbye to “clean-plate club”. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} Lots of parents grew up under the clean-plate rule, but that way doesn't help kids listen to their own bodies when they are full. When kids feel full, they're likely to overeat.

{#blank#}3{#/blank#} Food preferences(喜好) are developed early in life, so try to offer different kinds of food. Likes and dislikes begin forming even when kids are babies. Parents may need to serve a new food on several different occasions(时机) for a child to accept it.

    Food is not love. Find better ways to say “I love you.” When foods are used to reward kids and show love, they may start to turn to food when feeling worried or unhappy. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}

Kids do as you do. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} When trying to teach good eating habits, try to set the best example.

Choose nutritious food, eat at the table, and don't forget breakfast.

A. Start them young.

B. Rewrite the kids' menu.

C. Be a role model and eat healthy yourself.

D. Offer praise and attention instead of food treats.

E. Let kids stop eating when they feel they've had enough.

F. You decide which foods to buy and when to serve them.

G. Let kids choose what to eat and how much of it they want.

"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." Those are the words of Thomas Alva Edison, one of the greatest {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (inventor) in the history of the United States.

Edison, who grew up in the Midwest, was {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (large) self-educated. He earned 1,093 patents in his lifetime, including the lightbulb. Being {#blank#}3{#/blank#} successful businessman, Edison often reworked existing technology, making it more practical for widespread use.

Edison was born on February 11, 1847, a day that {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (celebrate) as National Inventors' Day today. The Thomas Edison Center, which was created in memory of Edison, is at Menlo Park in New Jersey. It is said that the seven years Edison spent at the lab he created in New Jersey were the most {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (product).

"Menlo Park is the birthplace of {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (record) sound. It was in Menlo Park {#blank#}7{#/blank#} Edison invented the phonograph (留声机) in 1877. The invention led to the 30-year-old Ohio native's international fame. From then on, he was known {#blank#}8{#/blank#} the "Wizard (奇才) of Menlo Park."

A phonograph was the first device that was used {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (reserve) sound. It was the precursor (先驱) to record albums and CDs. The original model had no volume knob (旋钮), so listeners would have to control the sound by {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (place) a sock in the machine. That's where we get the expression "put a sock in it", which means "stop talking".
