Most people have heard of the Great Wall of China, but not many people outside of China know about the Grand Canal.

This man-made waterway — known in China as Da Yunhe — is more than 1,700 kilometres long and some parts of it are more than 2,000 years old. It connects the north of China with Hangzhou, a city in the southern part of the country. It's the longest man-made waterway in the world.

It was built as a way to transport grain(谷物) from the rich agricultural land in China's south to cities in the north. In fact, it's not one canal, but a system of canals and rivers connected together. It's still an important part of the transport system in China. Thousands of boats use it every day to transport grain and many other types of cargo(货物).

Now the Chinese government is doing new work on the Grand Canal. It is making parts of it deeper, so bigger ships can use it. The canal will also help to move water. There is a lot of rain in the south of China, but not as much in the north. The canal will carry millions of litres of water from the south to the north.

The Grand Canal is much less famous than the Great Wall, and not very many tourists visit it. But it's possible to go on a cruise(乘船游览)along some of the oldest parts of the canal. Passengers on these cruises see beautiful parts of China that other visitors don't see.

It's always a happy moment when you get some pocket money. But have you ever thought about how to spend your pocket money wisely？Here is some advice. 

Make a list. 

When you get your pocket money，don't get too excited. We all have a lot of things that we want. But do you really need them？That's why it is necessary to make a list before you spend money. Start with the thing you want most. You can also write down how much it costs or how important it is in your life. By doing this，you will see if it is really necessary to buy it. 

Help others. 

How about being more selfless （无私的） and using your pocket money to help others？We all know that there are many people in the world who are in need of our help. Helping others brings out the best in us and is one of the greatest joys（乐事） in our lives. So consider using your pocket money to do something useful and helpful，and feel how you can make a difference

Save as much as you can. 

There is an old saying that"Money doesn't grow on trees. "If you spend all your pocket money right away，you'll have no money until your next"pay day". A wallet sometimes might not be the best place to save money because it may make it easier for you to spend your money. Get a piggy bank （储蓄罐） or ask your parents to start a savings account （账户） for you. Someday when you look back，you'll get a strong feeling of achievement by saving so much money by yourself!

Pan Yuzhen,77, comes from Taijiang County, Guizhou Province. She is an inheritor(继承人) of Miao embroidery(刺绣).

"The girls in my hometown can embroider at an early age. When I was five years old, I learned embroidery from my mother and sister. Miao embroidery skills are not easy to learn, but I have learned all embroidery methods," Pan said. At first, Pan embroidered for her own use, but as she grew older and married, her skills were put to use for her family, creating beautiful embroidered clothes.

 To treat her daughter and feed the family, Pan embarked on a journey, travelling to different cities to sell her Miao embroidery products.

 In 1999, Zhang went to Beijing to join her mother. At that time, Pan had a store in a market. Here, she met a lot of foreign friends who were attracted by her embroidery skills and encouraged her to expand her business abroad." They advised me to go to foreign countries and sell cultural and creative products. Then I went to the US to do business connected with Miao embroidery," Pan said.

 In 2016, Pan's career took a huge leap forward as she worked with a famous clothing brand(品牌) in China. With the help of the brand, Pan went to the UK to take part in different fashion shows. Now Pan is well— known. Pan hopes more young people can inherit Miao embroidery skills.

 Chip was in first grade when I arrived at his school as a counselor(辅导员). It was shocking to me that he was described as an angry, uncontrollable and evil(惹人厌的) boy. How could sucha little boy, after being in school only one year, be considered"evil"? Over the next several months, I came to know Chip well enough to see that he was neither evil nor uncontrollable.

 But, one day, Chip threw a chair at his teacher and was sent to my office. I asked him what made him do this. He replied that his teacher hated him. He felt there was no way to ever get her to like him. I asked him if he would tell his teacher this. He nodded, and we called her into my office.

 When the teacher came, ____ . He then said that he knew he was a very, very bad boy, and he didn't think anyone could ever like him. His teacher listened to him with heartfelt compassion. Then she gave him a big warm hug, telling him she didn't hate him at all and, actually, she cared very much about him. Only sometimes Chip's behavior really scared her. It was clear to both Chip and me that she really meant it.

I put my left arm on his shoulders and the right hand on his heart. I told him how wonderful and lovely I saw him to be. I praised how special and brave he was to express his hurt feelings.

As I was speaking to him, his whole body came to rest on my right hand next to his heart. It was a moment in time unlike anything I had experienced before. From then on, I'm pleased to see his behavior improved through the rest of school years.

A child's mind is clear and sensitive(敏感的). He receives whatever others say without protection. It is as easy to consider someone hopeless as it is to consider him able in his own special way.

①Do video games do harm to our children? Today many children spend a lot of their free time playing games on the Internet. In the UK,99% of kids aged 8 to 15 play video games every week. This information tells us that the benefits and dangers of video games must be carefully considered.

②For many people, video games are fun. They have bright lights, funny cartoons and exciting stories. Everywhere you look, you can see children playing these games. They play on buses and trains, in restaurants and even at school.

③Video games are educational too. They make kids think in a creative way and they have to move their hand and eyes quickly. This can improve the way that a child's brain works. What's more, video games make children use their imagination. The player has to do many creative things, like drawing, telling stories and building things. Video games are also a good way to teach children about technology because they can learn how computers and other devices work while they play.

④However,a recent study suggests that video games can also be bad for children. First, children can download many games for free. This means that parents often don't know if their children are playing violent or scary games. Second, many children spend too much time playing games on computers and this can lead to health problems. Third, if children spend too much time playing games rather than doing thei homework, they can have problems at school and get bad grades. Finally, video games can affect children' social skills. If children spend too much time playing video games by themselves, they might not learn how to play with their friends.

⑤All in all, it seems clear that video games have some advantages and some disadvantages. It is up to parents to know what games their children are playing and how much time they spend on them. Parent: should also make sure their children get enough exercise and spend time with other children.
