    In 1945, a 12-year-old boy saw a beautiful brooch(胸针) in a shop window that set his heart racing. But the price—five dollars—was too high for Reuben Earle. Five dollars would buy almost a week's food for his family.

    Reuben couldn't ask his father for the money. Everything his father made through fishing went to his mother, Dora. Slim and beautiful, she was the center of the home, the glue that held it together. The housework was never-ending, and she struggled to feed and clothe their five children but she was happy as her family and their well-being were all she cared about.

    Nevertheless, he opened the shop's weathered(风化的) door and went inside. Standing proud and straight in his flour-sack(面粉袋改做的) shirt and washed-out trousers, he told the shopkeeper what he wanted, adding ,"But I don't have the money right now. Can you please hold it for me for some time？"

    "I'll try," the shopkeeper smiled. "People around here don't usually have that kind of money to spend on things. It should keep for a while."

    Reuben respectfully touched his worn cap and walked out. He would raise the money and not tell anybody, for he thought Mum would get surprised when she saw that brooch. On hearing the sound of hammering from a side street, Reuben suddenly had an idea that he could raise money by selling the used nail bags(装钉子的麻袋). People built their own homes in Bay Roberts, using nails bought in bags from a local factory. Sometimes the used bags were thrown away at the construction site, and Reuben knew he could sell them back to the factory for five cents a piece.

    That day he sold two nail bags and hid the money in a rusty soda tin(汽水罐).

Finally, the time came!

Hannah and I have been best friends since primary school and we spend almost every day with each other, sharing everything happening in our daily life and discussing problems in our school work. Sometimes, other children say we are no fun because we are both very academic and like to study, but we like it that way. We are both very hard-working and always get good grades at school.

Last Monday, we had a surprise math quiz. Thinking it was quite easy, I was not worried about the results at all. I must have sounded very proud of myself after the quiz, saying how easy it was and how I was sure to get a good grade. Unexpectedly, the next day after class, my math teacher told me that I had the lowest grade in the class! My heart sank and a great sense of shame washed over me; I must be really stupid to fail a simple math quiz!

Afterwards, I pretended to be cheerful, as if nothing had happened, but Hannah sensed something was wrong. When we went to wash our hands in the girls' washroom before lunch, Hannah tried to figure out what was the matter. Struggling to hold back my tears, I admitted I had failed the math quiz. "But you are a born math genius and you have put all your efforts in it. There must be some mistakes!" Hannah couldn't believe her ears. "I shouldn't have been so confident. Would you please keep it a secret for me?" I begged. Hannah nodded, promising not to tell anyone else about the secret.

However, that afternoon I noticed that my classmates were staring at me as I came into math class and, when I went to sit down, I was shocked to find a piece of paper on my desk that said, "Stupid Sarah got a D!" I was so upset that I felt like crying. I thought that Hannah must have told my classmates about my grade after promising not to. Everyone must have been laughing behind my back!

The next morning, my math teacher came to me, apologizing for his carelessness.

Pleasanton Partnerships in Education Foundation (PPIE) was started in 1987 to raise money by organizing running events for local schools. Based in Pleasanton, California, a suburb of San Francisco, the non-profit organization recently hosted a family-focused fitness event for the community. "Our event helps to bring the community together," said Mindy Louie, events and outreach manager for PPIE. "We have more than 3,000 participants, hard-working volunteers and viewers."

This year's fitness event took place on April 30 at the Alameda County Fairgrounds. It featured races of two miles, five kilometers and ten kilometers. A new Kids Challenge consisted of a quarter-mile run to encourage younger children to participate. When asked to describe the run, 11-year-old Jeremy Louie said, "Fun, exciting and enjoyable." Jeremy added that he was happy to help support his school.

PPIE supports all 15 schools in the Pleasanton Unified School District, which include more than 14, 500 students and 800 teachers and staff. The nonprofit organization tries to fund programs affected by budget cuts, while encouraging fitness and athleticism. To date, the PPIE has raised over $1 million for the school district.

A local runners' group called the BURN Youth Development (B. Y. D.) participated in the fundraising. The B.Y.D. has since grown to more than 100 youth members, 30 of whom ran in April's PPIE event. Jerry Wu, the group's founder and lead coach, explained that the B.Y.D. was born to keep kids running. "Watching them running strongly and happily makes me smile every time," Jerry said.

Jerry encourages teamwork and teaches the students valuable running techniques. As a B.Y.D. member, Ollie Gu, an eighth grader, was one of the top finishers in the ten-kilometer run. He completed the race in 40 minutes and 46 seconds and won first place in the 12-to-15 year-old age group. "The race was extremely rewarding," Ollie said. "I'm looking forward to it next year."

Calvin's day camp teacher, Autumn, passed out a sheet of paper with pictures and descriptions of different birds and a small pair of binoculars) (双筒望远镜) to each camper. He announced, "We're going to do a one-week challenge called ‘Big Week', where you try to identify birds and mark them on the paper. Whoever identifies the most birds wins."

Another challenge? Ever since camp started, Gladys had beaten Calvin at everything. If he won this one, maybe he'd finally show Gladys that she wasn't unbeatable. "How will you know if I really saw…" Calvin scanned the list. "… a glossy ibis?" "I won't," Autumn said. "A Big Week is based on honesty."

The next day at the preserve, when they hid behind some brush, Gladys spotted a great egret! "That was my gift to you," Gladys whisper-shouted with an I'm-going-to-win-this tone. "Like I would've missed that giant bird," Calvin protested. Suddenly, birds exploded above Calvin's head. Thunk! He fell down onto his back. Gladys rushed toward him, helped him up and advised, "Here's a tip: try being OUIET."

That evening, a large bird landed on Calvin's neighbor's tree. Calvin focused the binoculars. The bird had a bright red eye, a thick straight bill, a white throat and breast, and—oh, wow—long, thin, white feathers on the back of its head. "A black-crowned night heron!" he whispered excitedly. He was completely absorbed in his observation.

As the week went by, competition became fierce. Calvin had to win this contest. But chance seemed so slim! Then he remembered that he had found a feather that Autumn thought belonged to a Cooper's hawk close enough. He marked it, plus a few extra birds. What was the difference? He had seen them in the past, or he would see them eventually. He swallowed (吞咽) hard. No one will know the truth.

On the last day of Big Week, Autumn waved Gladys's checklist in the air. "Twenty-six is the number to beat. Anybody else?"
