    Last month, we went to the exhibition displaying China's outstanding achievements over the past five years.

    I always prided myself on being a wise shopper and having a good nose for bargains.     “Oh. There's nothing wrong with it. It's brand new. We're closing the store. It's on clearance like everything else. I'll go check.” A few minutes later he came back and said, “I'm sorry ma'am. Someone made a mistake on the sale tag. It should be $4,750 for the whole package.”

    I felt tears well up in my eyes. “Oh well”, I said sadly. “Of course, it was too good to be true. This is exactly like my husband's dreamboat. I guess I started to dream myself when I saw that price tag. He's going to be 62 years old Friday. Had to retire early for his health. It's been hard on just the pension but the stubborn old fool has been saving $10 every week for years to buy one just like this. I promise I won't buy anything, but it's just an old man's silly dream, you know. Always said he wanted to fish in a canoe after he retired,” my voice lowered and I turned and walked away.

Once, when I was a teenager, my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus (马戏). Finally, there was only one family between us and the ticket counter.

This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of twelve. You could tell they didn't have a lot of money.

Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children were wellbehaved, all of them standing in line, twobytwo behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly talking about the clowns, elephants, and other acts they would see that night with their brothers or sisters in a low voice.

One could sense they had never been to the circus before. It promised to be highlight of their young lives. The father and mother were at the head of the pack, standing proud as could be. The mother was holding her husband's hand, looking up at him as if to say, "You are my knight in shining armor."

He was smiling and responding in pride, looking back at her as if to say, "You got that right." The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly responded, "Please let me buy eight children's tickets and two adult tickets so I can take my family to the circus."

The ticket lady gave the price. The man's wife let go of his hand. Her head dropped, and his lips began to shake. The father leaned a little closer and asked, "How much did you say？"

The ticket lady again quoted the price. The man didn't have enough money.

How was he supposed to turn and tell his eight children that he didn't have enough money to take them to the circus？Actually we were not wealthy in any sense. So I understand how the kids would feel. I felt sorry for them.

However, their initial response to the arrangement was filled with anxiety for Kris. "I am kind of nervous before heading out. I wonder if I could remember my training?" said Kris Logemann, her voice with uncertainty. "Don't worry! You see the staff do such a great job. They are incredibly supportive to us and will provide guidance and reassure every step of the way." Robin comforted. She also added, "I am right there for you, too, Kris, we are in it together, and we'll make it just like before."

Robin Melcher remembered the first few rescues she and her sister went on. "We were helping a woman who had just lost her husband," said Kris. "We were taking things out of her house, but also holding her hand and loving her. The ability to do that... it's just really cool." "Obviously we love it because we come back," added Kris.

Full of power, Kris and Robin put their whole hearts into the training. During the Convoy of Hope's detailed training program, they learned about disaster response, safety procedures, and psychological first aid. Through hands-on practice and team-building exercise, they prepared physically and mentally for the tasks ahead. As Kris and Robin continued their volunteer work, they were faced with one of their most heart-struck and unforgettable challenges.
