Beijing is known as a large and busy city. But if you walk down one of its main streets into a small alley （巷），you may find something different—Beijing's hutongs!

People say they live in hutongs，but in fact，they live in the buildings on one side of the hutongs. Hutongs are the alleys between houses. 

Beijing has been China's capital city for over 700 years. As the city grows，the number of its people and houses is becoming larger and larger. Now there are more than 6，000 hutongs in Beijing. If all of them were connected end to end

Among all these hutongs，there are certainly some exceptional ones. While most of them are straight，some are curved（弯曲的）. Jiuwan Hutong is the one with the most curves. It's only about 390 meters long. Its name means nine curves，the narrowest hutong in Beijing is called Qianshi Hutong. It is only 40 cm wide at its narrowest point. In this hutong，only one person can pass at a time. 

Beijing people love hutongs because they bring them a lot of fun and relaxation. In the hutongs，people can enjoy the sun，sing songs and play chess with their neighbours. They can talk with others and listen to some stories

Hutongs are not only a symbol of Beijing's culture，but also an important part of China's national culture. So people try to keep them well as historical places of interest.

Mary is studying in a middle school in Shanghai. She likes Chinese {#blank#}1{#/blank#} very much because it is delicious. Today is the Dragon Boat Festival. Mary is watching the dragon boat race with {#blank#}2{#/blank#} classmates Alan and Henry. 

At noon, they all feel {#blank#}3{#/blank#} so they take a bus to a Chinese restaurant. They want to order (点餐) some Chinese food for {#blank#}4{#/blank#}. "I don't want to eat hamburgers. They are not {#blank#}5{#/blank#} for my health," Alan says. "I'd like some rice and chicken. What about you, Mary?" "Many Chinese say if you eat a dumpling with a coin (硬币), you can get good luck," says Mary. "We will have{#blank#}6{#/blank#}important test next Monday, so I'd like to have some Chinese {#blank#}7{#/blank#} to have good luck." 

"Haha! Mary," Alan says. "You can only eat them {#blank#}8{#/blank#} Chinese New Year." "Oh, I know, but now I want to{#blank#}9{#/blank#}some dumplings," Mary says. "And what would you like to eat, Henry?" 

"I'd like noodles," says Henry. "And I'd like some fish, too. It shows you will have lots of money {#blank#}10{#/blank#}fish sounds ‘yu' in Chinese." 

It was a sunny day. Tom got up very {#blank#}1{#/blank#} in the morning because he would try out for school basketball team. It was important for Tom. Tom ran downstairs to tell his mom that he had to {#blank#}2{#/blank#}for school earlier. Mom told him that he should eat breakfast first so that he would have enough{#blank#}3{#/blank#} after he got to school，but Tom said that he was too {#blank#}4{#/blank#} to eat. "Try to have some，"said Tom's mom. Tom still felt a little sick（心烦意乱的），but he ate some {#blank#}5{#/blank#} in the end. Before he left home，Tom's mom hugged him and {#blank#}6{#/blank#} him just to do his best. 

Shortly after Tom arrived at the basketball court，all the boys were required to run，catch and throw balls. Even though he had lost the ball several {#blank#}7{#/blank#}，Tom thought he did pretty well. Afterwards，Tom was really {#blank#}8{#/blank#} and walked off the court. Minutes later，one coach called {#blank#}9{#/blank#} name. He asked Tom if he would like to{#blank#}10{#/blank#} the school basketball team. Tom jumped in excitement. "That would be really great!" he shouted.
