Why do plants grow in some places and not in others? Why does some land have so much growing on it, while other land has almost no plants growing on it at all?

    To grow,  plants need several things. One is warmth. In very cold places almost nothing grows. Plants also need water. In very dry parts of the Earth only a few unusual plants can grow. That's why dry deserts(沙漠) everywhere are almost not covered by trees or grass.

    Plants must also have a place in which to put down their roots and grow. They find it difficult to grow on hard land. The town is built on hard land. The plants here have only the soil(土壤) found between the cracks of the stones to grow in.

    Another thing plants must have before they can grow is food.

    What will happen if we try to make things grow on the sandy beach? A few plants, such as beach grass, will grow in sand, but most plants won't. Even if the weather is warm enough and we water the plants each day, many of them will die because the sand on this beach has almost no plant food.

    Hong Kong has about forty public beaches. Some of the beaches are the best in the world. People can go there for a swim. You can go to most of them by bus, but if you want to go to some beaches you must take a boat. There are toilets, changing rooms and places to buy food and drink on most of the beaches.

    You can swim there without danger if you remember these instructions(指令).

⒈Never swim alone.

⒉Never swim after a meal or when you feel hungry or tired.

⒊Do not stay in the water too long.

    Remember: A red flag(旗帜)means that it is dangerous for anybody to go into the water. A blue flag means that it is dangerous for children.

    In today's world, almost everyone knows that air pollution and water pollution are harmful to people's health. However, not all the people know that noise is also a kind of pollution, and that is harmful to human health, too.

    People who work and live under noisy conditions usually become deaf. Today, scientists believe that 10% of the workers in Britain are becoming deaf because of the noise where they work. Many of the workers who print newspapers and who weave cloth (织布) become deaf. Plenty of people living near airports also become deaf. Recently it was discovered that many teenagers in America could hear no better than 65-year-old persons, because these young people like to listen to pop music and most of pop music is a kind of noise. Besides, noise which is produced by jet planes or machines will make people's life difficult and unpleasant. It can make people ill or even drive them mad.

    It is said that a continuous noise of more than 85 decibels (分贝) can cause deafness. Now the governments in many countries have made laws to control noise and make it less than 85 decibels.

    In China, the government is trying to solve not only air and water pollution problems but also noise pollution problems.

What do we do when we go camping? First, we work out a plan. We take food, clothing, a knife and things for cooking and eating. We take things to keep us away from insects and the sunlight. 

Then we put everything into the car and drive to the woods (树林). We look for a place for campers and look for a good place for our tent. The place should have a lot of moving air. This will keep some insects away. High land with water on both sides of it is good. Then we put up our tent. We put everything into the tent, and we are ready for fun. We can do many things. We can swim in the lake, walk in the woods, climb a mountain, row a boat or go fishing. 

In the evening, we come back to the tent. We build a big fire because it can keep the insects away. We sit around the fire and talk. We may tell interesting stories or we may sing songs. At night we lie down on the grass. We can look up at the stars. It is a busy day, so we try to go to sleep early. Everything is dark. Everything is quiet. We hope we won't hear music from the radio in the next tent. We hope it won't rain. 

Gongyuan Road is a good place in Wenzhou. Many people like to go there. 

It is in the centre of Wenzhou. It is {#blank#}1{#/blank#}（在……之间）Zhongshan Park and Wuma Street. People can get there by {#blank#}2{#/blank#}（公共汽车）or by car. 

There are shops on the road. Many people come here to {#blank#}3{#/blank#}（买）different things. They can find tea, clothes, {#blank#}4{#/blank#}（花）and so on. Others come here to eat Wenzhou food like Lamp Cakes. They are {#blank#}5{#/blank#}（真正地）delicious. 

On the road, there are some old houses with stories about Wenzhou. The road is very clean, there isn't {#blank#}6{#/blank#}（一些）litter*. Many parents take their {#blank#}7{#/blank#}（孩子）to visit them on weekends. They can also watch Opera on{#blank#}8{#/blank#}（星期六）.
