People once went hungry．A rich man who made bread and cakes sent for twenty of the1. children in the town，and told them to take a loaf（条）of bread from a 2every day till the hard days passed．

    The hungry children came together3 ， and argued for the bread，because each wished to have the largest one．Finally they went away without even thanking the good gentleman．

    But Gretchen，a poorly﹣dressed little girl，did not argue or 4with the rest，but remained standing quietly far away from them．5the bad﹣mannered girls left，she took the smallest bread，which alone was left in the basket，kissed the gentleman's hand，and went home．

    The next day the children were as bad﹣mannered as before，and poor，shy Gretchen 6loaf hardly the size of the one she got the first day．When she came home，her mother cut the loaf open．Many new shining pieces of 7fell out of it．

    Her mother was very surprised and worried，and said，"Take the money back to the good gentleman at once，for it must have got into the dough（生面团）8mistake．Be quick，Gretchen!Be quick!"

    But when the little girl gave the rich man her mother's 9 ， he said，"No，no，my child，it was no mistake．I had the silver pieces put into the smallest loaf to give you．Always be as satisfied，quiet，and 10as you now are．Go home now，and tell your mother that money is your own．"

It was a cold afternoon. Ginny and I were walking home after work {#blank#}1{#/blank#} suddenly a young man came. He asked Ginny if she wanted a hug. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} sign which read "Free Hugs" was in his hand. There were other people with him. They {#blank#}3{#/blank#}( hold) their handmade signs high.

"Sure!"Ginny smiled and walked up to him {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(slow). She hugged him with all the love she had in her heart. "Wow!" he said. "That is {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(warm) hug I've had all day!" Then the young man asked.me {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(give) a hug. I walked into his open arms and said, "You.got it!" Then we parted.

A young lady walked up {#blank#}7{#/blank#} hugged Ginny. Then she hugged me too. I felt the warmth filling my heart. Ginny and I were going through a hard time. We were stressed and worried {#blank#}8{#/blank#} life, but on that afternoon, for a short moment, it was forgotten completely.

"‘Free Hugs' was to reach out and hug a stranger to brighten up their lives," said the young man. Ginny and I stepped back and watched them work their magic with those who accepted {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (they). They offered hugs to everyone.

It took a simple hug to make all {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(thing) better.

Last year in early summer, I was walking up the hill to my house when I saw two birds, each about 60 centimeters tall, standing on the path. They didn't seem to 1 me until I was right in front of them and then they at once moved 2 into the bushes.

I was quite excited by the idea of two birds making a nest (巢) in my front yard, although I didn't really expect it 3 wild birds don't usually nest so close.

A few weeks later, the birds 4 again. I found them crouching (蜷缩) beside a tree off to the side of the path. As I moved nearer to them, I imagined that they would 5 like they did last time. But 6 they stuck out their heads and made a threatening (威胁的) croaking (呱呱叫) sound. It seemed to warn me not to go any 7 .

I didn't know 8 they were croaking at me until a short time later I made an amazing discovery — they had 9 small baby birds. 

As I moved quietly towards the birds, 10 not to make any sudden movements, they started their croaking again. They straightened their necks forward so they seemed 11 and more threatening. The mother carefully crouched down over the two chicks, and 12 them well in her feathers. 

I was watching them with 13 when I suddenly tripped and fell to the ground. The birds took this as a threat and the father raced towards me, 14 his wings to protect the mother and the chicks while making himself appear larger. 

I was 15 to have surprised them and left quickly. I was amazed by their fearless actions. Their parental natural ability kicked in and made them so brave. It is hard not to respect nature. 

 My son Laurie came home at the first lunchtime from the kindergarten* and shouted," Isn't anybody here?" " How was school today?" I asked." All right," he said." Did you learn anything?" his father asked. Laurie answered coldly," I didn't learn nothing." 

" But the teacher spanked* a boy," Laurie said," For being fresh*," he added, with his mouth full." What did he do?" I asked." Who was it?" Laurie thought." It was Charles." he said.

 The next day, as soon as he sat down at lunch," Well, Charles was bad again today. He said." Today Charles hit the teacher The next few days, Laurie still came home with tons of bad stories about Charles.

 During the third and fourth weeks it looked like a change in Charles. Laurie reported kindlessly," Charles was so good today the teacher gave him an apple." " What?" I said, and my husband added unbelievably," You mean Charles?" " Charles, Laurie said." He gave the crayons around and picked up the books and the teacher said he was her helper." zksq620

" Can this be true, about Charles?" I asked my husband." Can something like this happen?" " Wait and see," my husband said cynically*. Within a week, everything was back to normal and Charles was his usual, terrible self.

" The Parent meeting's next week," I told my husband one evening." I'm going to find Charles's mother there." " Ask her what happened to Charles," my husband said." I'd like to know." " I'd like to know myself'I said.

 At the meeting, I looked over the faces of all the other mothers. None of them looked unhappy enough to be the mother of Charles. No one stood up and apologised for the way her son had been acting.

 After the meeting, I found Laurie's teacher." I' ve been wanting to meet you," I said." I'm Laurie's mother." " Oh, yes," she said." We' re all so interested in Laurie." " He certainly likes kindergarten" I said." He talks about it all the time." " He's had some trouble getting used to school," she said." But I think he' ll be all right." " Laurie usually fits in quickly, I said." I suppose his trouble might be from Charles' influence." " Charles? the teacher said." Yes, I said, laughing." You must have your hands full with Charles." " Charles?" she said." We    don't    have    any    Charles    in    kindergarten." 

There was magic in the secret garden in spring. First everything turned green. Then the green changed to colors— blue, purple and red. There were flowers everywhere. The roses— the roses! From small buds they grew into large flowers and filled the air with pleasant smell. 

Colin was sick and thought that he would die soon. But he watched all the changes as they happened in spring. Dickon, Colin's friend, pushed Colin on wheelchair to the garden every morning and Colin spent the day there. Sometimes he sat on the grass watching the insects. He once watched a mouse digging a hole. He learnt a lot of things about the ways of these insects and animals. 

One morning Dickon pushed Colin to the secret garden as usual. Mary, Colin's cousin, and Ben Weatherstaff, the gardener, were there too. Colin said, "I want to tell you something very important. "

"I believe that there is magic in everything, " continued Colin. "Dickon knows some magic. He charms（迷住）animals and people. Mary also knows a bit of magic because she was born in India. There's magic in the garden, too. I'm going to try and put some in me because I want to be well and strong. Please sing ' Magic is in me!' with me. "

"Magic is in me. Magic is in me. Magic is in all of us. " They started singing. 

Then Colin tried to walk on his own. His first step was shaky（摇晃的）and he even fell to the ground. But as he took further steps forward, he soon got used to it and was able to walk smoothly. Although he was slow, he did not fall again. 

"I can walk! The magic worked!" he cried. 

Zheng Qinwen, a 21-year-old Chinese girl who is talented in playing tennis, won the first gold medal in the women's singles tennis in Paris Olympic on August 3^rd.This is the first time that Chinese team has won the Olympic gold medal in women's singles tennis.

"Nothing can describe my feeling right now, it is unreal. I have always been hoping to get a gold medal for China. Finally, I made it." Zheng said excitedly after the last competition. She thinks national honor is the most important. She loves her country so much, playing for China has given her energy（精力）as well as power（力量）. Although she was very tired after 3 hours' competition, she always said proudly "What I can be sure is that I'm going to fight until the last moment, because I am not only playing for myself but also for my country. I'm so tired but I'd like to fight for another three hours for my country."

Zheng's journey to victory was filled with challenges but she faced these difficulties bravely and tried to do it better. In the end, she made the history. The whole world remembered her name.
