What's a spacewalk? Any time an astronaut gets out of a spacecraft(航天器) while in space, it is called a spacewalk. Astronautsgo on spacewalks for many reasons. For example, experiments can be placed on theoutside of a spacecraft. This lets scientists learn how being in space affects(影响) different things. By going on spacewalks, astronauts can also fix thingsinstead of bringing them back to the earth to fix.

When astronautsgo on spacewalks, they wear spacesuits to keep themselves safe. Inside spacesuits, astronauts have the oxygen(氧气) they needto breathe and the water they need to drink. To keep the astronauts and the spacecraftsafe, the astronauts must leave and go back to the spacecraft through a specialdoor. When on a spacewalk, astronauts use safety tethers to stay close to theirspacecraft. Tethers are like ropes, connect the spacewalkers with the spacecraft. They keep astronauts from floating(漂 浮) away into space.Another way astronauts stay safe during spacewalks is by wearing a SAFER. SAFERis worn like a backpack. It helps an astronaut move around in space.

How doastronauts train for spacewalks? One way is by going for a swim. Floating in spaceis a lot like floating in water. Astronauts practice spacewalks underwater in ahuge special swimming pool. For every one hour they will spend on a spacewalk, astronautsneed to train seven hours in the pool. Another way astronauts practice for a spacewalkis by using virtual reality(虚拟现实). It looksand feels just like a spacewalk.

Today, only three countries have finished spacewalks independently. They are Russia, theUnited States and China. The first person to go on a spacewalk in the world wasAlexei Leonov from Russia. Zhai Zhigang is the first Chinese astronaut to go ona spacewalk. The world record of spacewalks is held by Russian astronaut AnatolySolovyev. He has been on 16 spacewalks and spent more than 82 hours outside in space.

Christmas for Americans is like the Spring Festival for Chinese people. It is a time when families get together and everyone is happy. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Before Christmas, everyone goes shopping to buy the gift for a family member, or a friend. Then they put the gifts under the Christmas tree. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}

In the weeks before Christmas, the shops are full of wonderful things that children want.

{#blank#}3{#/blank#} Pets look cute, and some pets are not too expensive to buy — it is easy to buy one quickly. But before you buy a pet, you should ask yourself some important questions, such as" How long do I love this pet?"" Do I have enough time to keep it?"" Can the pet be happy in my family?"{#blank#}4{#/blank#} Because the family thinks the pets are not interesting any more, or they don't have enough time or money for the pets. So in the UK at Christmas time, you can see many signs(标牌) in pet shops:{#blank#}5{#/blank#} Think before you buy one!

A. It is also a time for giving gifts.

B. A pet is for life, not for Christmas.

C. Most people have to wait until Christmas morning before they can open the gifts.

D. Children often ask their parents for a pet, so pet shops are very popular.

E. It's sad but true that not long after Christmas, people don't want to keep them.

①An energy company in Sweden has started a project to heat up the city of Västeras using large underground caves(洞穴) full of warm water — like a huge hot water bottle under the streets.

②The energy company, Mälarenergi, will use large caves that already been there and can hold almost the same amount of water as 120 Olympic- sized swimming pools. Around 40 years ago the caves were used to hold large amounts of oil, in case it was needed for fuel(燃料). However, the caves were emptied in 1985 and they haven't been used to store anything since then.

③Mälarenergi is cleaning the caves before it fills them with water, which will be heated up to 95℃ using heat from Mälarenergi's nearby power station. The thick rock holds the heat and will keep the water warm even in winter. An instrument called a heat exchange r will warm the water and will turn the heat into another liquid(液体) when it is ready to be used. This liquid will then travel into people's heater through the local heating network, which supplies warmth for 98% of the households in Västeras. The town is home to 130,000 people.

④The system should help the company to carry on providing heat for customers, even on really cold days when lots of people turn on the heating. The company hopes it will be a useful way to warm homes, with less waste, because it will be difficult for the heat to run away from underground.

⑤ In Finland, a system like this is already in use, providing 25,000 homes with heat from underground caves. Some scientists think it could be used in the UK. About a quarter of the British population live above coal mines(煤矿) that are no longer used. Over the years, lots of these man- made caves have been covered in water and the natural warmth underground has kept the water at a temperature of around 15℃. The water could be warmed up even more by using a heat machine and sent to nearby houses to heat them. This method has already been used before in England.

It happens every spring. Flowers come out everywhere on the same day. But how do plants "know" when to flower?

For years, it has been a difficult question for scientists. But a US research group may have finally answered it—the secret lies in a protein(蛋白质)called FKF1. This helps plants to know when the days become long and when they get short. Then they can tell the seasons(季节)are changing.

Researchers found the FKF1 protein when they were studying a plant called Arabidopsis. It is sensitive(敏感的)to sunlight, and can be made active by sunlight.

Plants produce this protein every day in the late afternoon all year. If there is no light at this time, for example, in winter when the sun goes down early, the protein won't be active. But when spring comes and the days get longer, the FKF1 protein can be made active by day light and the plants "know" it is time to flower. " If there is light in the late afternoon, plants will know that the days are getting longer and that it is the best time for flowers to come out,"explained Takato Imaizumi, leader of study. But when conditions are poor for growing, such as during autumn or winter when the weather is cold and days are short, plants won' t flower.

Although researchers have only studied how the FKF1 protein works in the Arabidopsis, they believe that it is the same with many other plants, including crops such as rice and wheat.

"If we can control when flowers come out, we might be able to increase crop production," Imaizumi said.
