The idea of Mother's Day is a very old idea. It was started by the ancient Egyptians (埃及人),who celebrated(庆祝) a day to honor (向……表示敬意) Isis, the mother of the pharaohs. The early Christians(基督教徒) celebrated a day to honor Mary, the mother of Jesus.
Later, English Christians celebrated to honor all mothers. This English holiday was called “Mothering Sunday”. When the English came to America, they did not have time for Mothering Sunday, so the holiday was not celebrated in America. In 1914,the U.S passed a law which designated(规定) the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day to honor the mothers who had lost sons in war.
Today, Mother's Day is celebrated in many other countries for all mothers. In Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Mother's Day is celebrated on the same day as in the United States—the second Sunday in May. Children give their mothers cards, gifts, and flowers. Schools plan Mother's Day's special activities.
In China, the holiday is celebrated to show the respect(尊重) the Chinese have for the old people, and the love they have for their parents. Ten top mothers are chosen by the government. People all over the country try different ways to help mothers who are poor.

The Chinese are very generous with money when it comes to educating their children. Some parents send their children to the best schools or even abroad to England, the US or Australia, regardless(不管) of how much this costs.  Many also want their children to take after-school activities where they either learn a musical instrument or ballet, or other classes that will give them a head start in life. The Chinese believe that the more expensive an education is, the better it is, so parents often spend a great deal of money on education. Even poor parents buy a computer for their son or daughter.

However, what most parents fail to see is that the best education they can give their children is usually very cheap. Parents should know their children's different skills.  They will usually be good in some areas while poor in others. What most parents fail to realize though, is that today's children lack(缺乏) confidence.

The problem is that parents are only educating their children on how to take tests and how to study well. They are not teaching them the most important skills that can be helpful to their growth. These skills can also build their confidence.

Parents can help achieve this by teaching their children practical skills like cooking, sewing and other housework.

Teaching a child to cook will improve many of the skills that he will need later in life. Cooking needs patience and time. It is an enjoyable but difficult experience. A good cook always tries to improve his cooking, so he will learn to work hard and gradually finish his job successfully. The result, a well-cooked dinner, will give a child a lot of satisfaction and confidence.

An old machine, such as a broken radio or TV set that you give your child as a toy may make him curious. If he spends hours looking at it, and trying to mend it, your child might become an engineer when he grows up. It is better to do such than teach a child to read a book. These activities can teach them  to think, and to use their minds.

E. Cats can bring illness.

F. Cats kill many birds and small animals every year.

{#blank#}1{#/blank#}Many kinds of birds live in the United States, but the number of the birds is becoming smaller every year. One of the leading reasons is the growing number of pet cats. By keeping your pet cats in your home, you can help give birds a better possible chance to live.

{#blank#}2{#/blank#}Of the 90 million pet cats in this country, about twothirds are allowed to go outside. It is said that these cats kill hundreds of millions of birds each year as well as billions of small animals such as rabbits and field mice.

{#blank#}3{#/blank#}They can also bring illness to the animals that live in people's yard(院子),and further weakening(变弱)the health of the natural populations.

{#blank#}4{#/blank#}Allowing pet cats to go outside is not just bad for birds and wildlife(野生动物). It is bad for the cats themselves, too. Outdoor cats can get sick very easily. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}Keep your pet cat inside! If you raise a young cat, it's your duty to let it play inside.
