In my living room, there is aplaque that advises me to “bloom {#blank#}1{#/blank#}youare planted”. It reminds me of Dorothy. I got to know Dorothy in the early1980s, when I was teaching Early Childhood Development through a program. Thejob {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(responsible) requiredoccasional visits to the classroom of each teacher in the program. Dorothystands out in my memory as on one {#blank#}3{#/blank#}bloomed in her remote area.

       Dorothy taught in a remote school nearHarlan. To get to her school from the town of Harlan, I followed a road {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(wind) around the mountain. In theeight-mile journey, I crossed the same railroad track five times, giving thepossibility of {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(catch) by thesame train five times. Rather than feeling excited by this drive throughmountains, I found it depressing. The poverty level was shocking and the smallshabby houses gave me the greatest feeling of {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(hope).

        From the moment of my arrival at thelittle school, all my gloom disappeared. Upon arriving at Dorothy's classroom,I was greeted with smiling faces and treated like a queen. The children{#blank#}7{#/blank#}(prepare) to show me their {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(late) projects. Dorothy told me witha smile that they were serving poke greens salad and cornbread they madethemselves for dinner.

        Lonely {#blank#}9{#/blank#}she was far away from the moderncivilization and convenience, she never ran out of reports of excitingactivities of her students. Her enthusiasm never cooleddown. She passed all the tests {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(excellent)and I found that Dorothy was really blooming where life had planted her.

    Do you know the UK government has{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(successful) passed a law banning branding on packs of cigarettes? That means tobacco manufacturers will be forced{#blank#}2{#/blank#}(pack) their cigarettes in plain packets.

    The motivation behind this{#blank#}3{#/blank#}(decide) is to make smoking less appealing to people, especially children.

    A similar law{#blank#}4{#/blank#}was passed in Australia in 2012 has resulted{#blank#}5{#/blank#}a fall in smoking rates from 15.1% to 12.8% for people aged 14.

    As of January 2015, 22% of adult men and 17% of adult women smoke in Great Britain. The possibility of smoking in the UK increases with age so that by 15 years of age 8% of school children{#blank#}6{#/blank#}(be) regular smokers. Children, it is thought, will be less attracted to cigarettes{#blank#}7{#/blank#}(sell) in unbranded boxes.

    Smoking is one of{#blank#}8{#/blank#}biggest causes of preventable deaths in England. Every year about 80,000 die and over 450,000{#blank#}9{#/blank#}(send) to hospital due to smoking. This places a large strain on the health service and is also a factor in why the government would like to prevent people from{#blank#}10{#/blank#}(take) up smoking or help them quit.

    Gabi Rizea only discovered his talent for woodcarving three years ago, and has since put{#blank#}1{#/blank#} to good use, saving dozens of old tree stumps (树桩) from {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (remove) by turning them into impressive works of art.

    Rizea became a woodcarver{#blank#}3{#/blank#} (complete) by accident. Three years ago, after buying himself a new chainsaw (链锯), he{#blank#}4{#/blank#} (start) “playing” with it on a block of wood. He tried carving a human face into the wood, and to his surprise, it turned out pretty good. Today, he is so good at woodcarving that his home city allows him to work his magic on old tree stumps and so far about 40 works of art{#blank#}5{#/blank#}(create) in the local parks.

    “In 99% of the cases, the wood just doesn't match my ideas,” he said in an interview. “I first have to remove all the rotten parts, and sometimes{#blank#}6{#/blank#} is left isn't enough for my designs.”

    Following his recent rise to fame, Rizea has been asked by many{#blank#}7{#/blank#} (city), including the capital of Romania to transform their old tree trunks {#blank#}8{#/blank#} works of art. He promised to honor their requests, but he will never repeat any of the artworks{#blank#}9{#/blank#} (find) in his home city.

    In spite of his obvious talent, the Romanian {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (art) recently got into art school in order to fully master woodcarving.

    I'm exciting to tell you about the American school system. Secondary school in the US usually covered seven years, grades six to twelve. At the end of twelfth grade, American student receive the high school diploma. Students need a high school diploma if they want to go to the college.

    The school year is dividing into two semesters, the first of that is September through December, and the second January through May. We have a long summer vacation! We start school in 7: 50 am and we finish at 3 pm.

    I take part in many amazed after­school activities—I play football, basketball, volleyball, table tennis and I went to theater club.

    Will you tell me something about your summer vacation and the Chinese school system in your next letter?

    Iceland is a land of volcanoes. Nowhere is {#blank#}1{#/blank#}（evident） than on the Westman Islands off the southern coast of Iceland. Here, {#blank#}2{#/blank#}（century） of volcanic eruptions formed many eye-catching sea cliffs （悬崖）, among {#blank#}3{#/blank#} one stands out: A part of the volcano-formed coast on Heimaey looks exactly like the head of a large elephant {#blank#}4{#/blank#}（stick）its trunk in the water.

    In fact, it looks so much like an elephant that many people think it must have been shaped by humans. That is not {#blank#}5{#/blank#} case, however. The elephant's realistic {#blank#}6{#/blank#}（appear）is, at least partially, due to the fact that the cliff {#blank#}7{#/blank#}（consist）of a special rock. The rock gives the figure "skin" that looks wrinkled and gray, just like that of a real elephant.

    The most common theory is that the rock formations came from the Eldfell Volcano, which {#blank#}8{#/blank#}（erupt）many times since the 1940s.

    In spite of the strong resemblance to an elephant, some people {#blank#}9{#/blank#}（actual）see something different when they look at the rock formation. They see the fictional character Cthulhu, a sea beast.

    Whether you see an elephant {#blank#}10{#/blank#} a fictional beast, as one of many attractions on Heimaey, the rock does draw curious sightseers.
