In order to know a foreign language thoroughly, four things are necessary. Firstly, we must understand the language when we hear {#blank#}1{#/blank#} spoken. Secondly, we must be able to speak it ourselves correctly with {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (confident) and without hesitation. Thirdly, we must be able to read the language, and fourthly, we must be able to write it. We must be able to make sentences that are {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (grammatical) correct.

    There is no easy way to success {#blank#}4{#/blank#} language learning. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} good memory is a great help, but it is not enough only {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(memorize) rules from a grammar book. It is not much use learning by heart long lists of words and {#blank#}7{#/blank#} meanings, studying the dictionary and so on. We must learn by using the language. {#blank#}8{#/blank#} we are satisfied with only a few rules we have memorized, we are not really learning the language. “Learn through use” is a good piece of advice for those {#blank#}9{#/blank#} are studying a new language. Practice is important. We must practise speaking and {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(write) the language whenever we can.

    Last October, while tending her garden in Mora, Sweden, Lena Pahlsson pulled out a handful of small{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(carrot) and was about to throw them away. But something made her look closer, and she noticed a{#blank#}2{#/blank#}(shine) object. Yes, there beneath the leafy top of one tiny carrot was her long-lost wedding ring.

    Pahlsson and her husband now think the ring probably got {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(sweep) into a pile of kitchen rubbish and was spread over the garden{#blank#}9{#/blank#}it remained until the carrot's leafy top accidentally sprouted (生长) through it.     In many countries{#blank#}1{#/blank#} is not unusual for families of different backgrounds to live together in the shared space.{#blank#}2{#/blank#} ，in the United States, this idea may still be considered odd.

    But this type of housing{#blank#}3{#/blank#}(call) co-housing, is gaining{#blank#}4{#/blank#}(popular) in the United States, too. Co-housing complexes are popping up across the country. For many people, this way of life is a relief to the busy modern lifestyle. A co-housing community has{#blank#}5{#/blank#}(private) owned houses and shared land. There is often a “common house” with a kitchen and dining room, meeting room, and maybe a workshop of library or music room. About 25 co-housing communities{#blank#}6{#/blank#}(build) in recent years, and 150 more are planned.

    A co-housing complex is a place {#blank#}7{#/blank#} residents shop, cook, and eat together. Residents of a co-housing complex like its sense of shared community. Children have other kids to play{#blank#}8{#/blank#},{#blank#}9{#/blank#}many families like. Other residents like the feeling of living in a “ village”. Residents also say that they can live in co-housing for{#blank#}10{#/blank#}money than they would pay for nearby apartments.

No longer a young man, Edison watched his lifetime effort {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(go) up in smoke and said, “There is great value in disasters. All our mistakes are burnt up. Thank God we can start anew.” In spite of disasters, three weeks later, {#blank#}3{#/blank#} invented the phonograph(留声机). What {#blank#}4{#/blank#} attitude!
