English perfectly shows the "network effects" of a global tongue: the more people use it, the more useful it is. Parents expect their children (master)English, which is encouraging the (grow)of private schooling. Education authorities are switching to English medium, in part to control the outflow(外流) of children into the private sector.

Teaching children in English is fine if that is they speak at home and their parents are fluent it. But that is not case in most public and low-cost private schools. Children are taught in a language they don't understand by teachers English is poor. The children learn neither English nor anything else.

Research shows that children learn (much)when they are taught in their mother tongue than they do when they are taught in any other language. In a study of children in 12 schools in Cameroon last month, those taught in Kom (do)better than those taught in English in all subjects.

English should be an important subject at school, but not (necessary)the language of instruction. Rather than switching to English-medium teaching, governments fearful of (lose) custom (光顾) to the private sector should look at the many possible ways of improving public schools.

There was a soldier sitting in the seat beside {#blank#}4{#/blank#}. Wondering why this one had not been taken, Mr. Robinson at once went towards it.

When he reached it, however, Mr. Robinson saw that there was a notice stuck on the seat. It said, “This seat{#blank#}5{#/blank#}(keep) for proper load balance, thank you.” Because he had never seen such a kind of{#blank#}6{#/blank#}(usual) notice in a plane before, Mr. Robinson was a little surprised. But he thought that the plane must be carrying something {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(particular) heavy in it, so he walked on and found{#blank#}8{#/blank#}empty seat, not beside a window, to sit in.

Two or three people tried to sit in the window seat beside the soldier, but they too read the notice and went on. When the plane was nearly full, a very pretty girl hurried into the plane. The soldier,{#blank#}9{#/blank#}was watching the passengers coming in, quickly took the notice off the seat beside his and in this way succeeded in having the company of a{#blank#}10{#/blank#}(beautiful) during the whole trip.

Now anyone wanting to get from downtown Maputo, capital of Mozambique, to Katembe, or vice versa, can do so easily, and in a matter of minutes, thanks to the longest twintower suspension bridge in Africa, {#blank#}4{#/blank#} hangs over Maputo Bay.

"Mozambique had long planned to build a bridge linking the north and south of the bay, but nothing came of them because {#blank#}5{#/blank#} a lack of money and technology,"  said Wang Lijun, vicepresident of China Road and Bridge Corporation (公司), which built {#blank#}6{#/blank#} bridge.

The MaputoKatembe Bridge, {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(open) in November after four years of construction, is part of the Maputo Bridge and Link Roads project which {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(build) by CRBC. It {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(be) 187 kilometers long and serves as an important highway that directly links Maputo to the border with South Africa, to the south.

"By night, when the lights are on, it's {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(especial) impressive," Wang said, and as a landmark it could help develop tourism and attract overseas investment for Mozambique.

"That would be a very {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (reason) thing to do in a big city, but it could destroy a small village like {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (us), Nick said.

Nick's guests, {#blank#}6{#/blank#}had heard their conversation, asked why they should not buy salt more cheaply if they could. Nick replied, "The only reason a man would sell salt {#blank#}7{#/blank#}a lower price would be because he was desperate for money. And anyone who took advantage of that situation would be showing a lack of respect for the sweat and struggle of the man who worked very hard to produce it."

"But such a small thing couldn't {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (possible) destroy a village."

"In the beginning, there was only {#blank#}9{#/blank#}very small amount of unfairness in the world, but everyone added a little, always {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (think) that it was only small and not very important, and look where we have ended up today."
