This week, four COVID-19 vaccines have appeared highly effective in preventing the COVID-19 disease and will roll out to market soon.

On November 17, Sinovac, a Chinese biotech company, published its promising results from Phase(阶段)1 and 2 trials in the medical journal The Lancet. The data shows that the vaccine, Corona Vac, has produced a very quick and strong immune response and did not cause any severe side effects among the 700 people tested. Sinovac has already started the Phase 3 tests in UAE, Brazil, Indonesia and Bangladesh since July 3. Initial Phase 3 data is likely to be available within the next month. (Update: the Phase 3 tests in UAE have shown that Corona Vac is 86% effective and UAE has officially approved it for nationwide use.)

One day earlier, Moderna reported that its vaccine is 94% effective and strongly protects against serious COVID-19 illness. On November 18, Pfizer announced that its vaccine is 95% effective. Britain's Oxford-AstraZeneca group said on November 23 that its vaccine is up to 70% effective.

However, Corona Vac may have a series of potential advantages over the mRNA vaccines produced by Moderna and Pfizer and Oxford-AstraZeneca group's DNA vaccines, since there hasn't been any mRNA or DNA vaccines approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) before, while Corona Vac is based on a tried-and-true method that uses weakened or dead COVIE-19.

Another big advantage for Corona Vac is the storage temperature as it can be stored between 2℃ and 8℃ for up to three years, while the mRNA vaccines have to be kept between -20℃ and -70℃. It would make their storage and distribution really challenging, especially in the developing countries.

Although we are seeing lights by the end of the tunnel, it's important to remember that an effective vaccine is not enough to end the crisis quickly, because it will take months to produce enough vaccines and distribute them. Therefore, measures like social distancing, washing hands and wearing face masks will remain essential to control the spread of COVID-19.

(1)、Which country has agreed to use CoronaVac for all the people?
A、UAE. B、Brazil. C、Indonesia. D、Bangladesh.
(2)、How does Sinovac differ from Pfizer's and Moderna's vaccines?
A、It is much more effective. B、It is a kind of mRNA vaccine. C、It is based on a more mature method. D、It has to be stored in extremely low temperature.
(3)、What is the purpose of the last part of the text?
A、To warn the risk of the new vaccines. B、To remind people not to let down their guard. C、To show the difficulty in distributing the vaccines. D、To tell people how to prevent the spread of COVTD-19.
(4)、What is the text mainly about?
A、The differences of the various vaccines. B、The potential advantages of CoronaVac. C、The disadvantages of the mRNA and DNA vaccines. D、The Phase 1 trial results of four COVID-19 vaccines.

Drug problems

If you're worried about your own or someone else's drug taking or misuse, it's good to know the facts.

Why take drugs?

Drug users don't start using drugs with the intention of becoming addicted. But many drugs contain addictive substances(物质) and even people who use them occasionally can become dependent and need to use them regularly.

Reasons why people start using drugs can include: to escape problems they may be having in other parts of their life, peer pressure and fitting in with another group of people, being curious about the effects of drugs.

If you start to use drugs on a regular basis, or if you become dependent on them, it can affect your family and friends as well as having a serious impact on your own physical and mental well-being.

Drug overdoses can be fatal. You can die instantly from misusing substances and drugs that you can buy over the counters.

Signs of drug abuse and misuse

There is not a common list of symptoms that you can use to tell if you or someone you know is misusing drugs. That's because drug use affects different people in different ways, depending on the type of drugs they're using.

Although anxiety, tiredness and a change in sleeping habits can be signs of drug use, they can also be caused by changes in your body, stress or other problems.

_____________________

Drugs are categorised into three classes based on their overall level of harm. Class A drugs are the most dangerous, however, all the drugs in all three classes are harmful and addictive.

Remember that all drugs are illegal, even Class C drugs like cannabis(大麻烟). If you're caught selling them to other people, or carrying a small amount in your pocket, it's likely that the police will get involved.

If you're found guilty of any of these offences, you may face a fine or time in custody(拘留), with Class A drugs carrying the most severe sentences.

Worried about a friend?

If you think that one of your friends or relatives is misusing drugs, you may want to approach them and talk about it. It's not your responsibility to make them stop, but you can tell them about how their behaviour is affecting your relationship.

If they ask for help with their problem, then it's important to listen and help them find the right information and treatment.

Driving could soon be a far more pleasant experience thanks to a personal in-car robot being developed by researchers. The robot, which is called “Affective Intelligent Driving Agent (AIDA)” will be able to tell you the best route home based on traffic reports, remind you to pick up petrol and suggest places you may like to visit. The robot, which sits on the dashboard, is being developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in collaboration with Volkswagen.

AIDA communicates with the driver through an expressive robot screen and will even appear sympathetic if you're having a bad day. Cynthia Breazeal, director of MIT's Personal Robots Group, said: “We are developing AIDA to read the driver's mood from facial expression and other cues and respond in a proper way.”

AIDA works by analyzing the driver's mobility patterns, keeping track of common routes and destinations. The creators say the robot should be able to work out home and work locations within a week of driving. Soon afterwards, the system will direct the driver to their preferred supermarket, suggesting a route that avoids traffic-clogged roads. AIDA might recommend a petrol stop en route if the fuel tank is nearly empty. The robot will also incorporate real-time information about traffic jams, the weather report, commercial activity, tourist attractions, and residential areas.

“In developing AIDA we asked ourselves how we could design a system that would offer the same kind of guidance as an informed and friendly companion.”

“AIDA can also give you feedback on your driving, helping you achieve more energy efficiency and safer behavior,” Assaf Biderman from SENSEable City Lab added.

Ways to Improve Vocabulary in Just One Day

The average American has a vocabulary in the thousands. Try these tricks to make sure yours builds up.

    ①Watch movies

"If you see the movie version of your favorite book you're likely to have a deeper understanding and knowledge of the words in it," says Neuman, professor of Childhood and Literacy Education at New York University. "Seeing and reading something on the same topic is really important."

    ②Read magazines

If you want to improve vocabulary, don't just flip through your favorite magazine, really read it.

    ③Listen to how words sound

Many people won't remember tricky words unless they come across them frequently. But if you hear a word that you think sounds interesting, you become word conscious(有意识的) and start using it yourself, says Neuman.

    ④Join a book club

"Book clubs are a wonderful strategy(策略) to learn new words," says Neuman. Not only will it force you to set aside time in your day to read, it's also a good way to discover books you might not normally be drawn to.

    ⑤Listen to the radio

Those types of programs can expose you to topics you may not be familiar with. Don't miss these middle school vocabulary words adults still don't know.

    ⑥Pay attention to your surroundings

Next time you walk down a busy street or take a walk in the park, try to describe what you're seeing as much as possible inside your head.

These days, it seems like everything is going digital. You can find almost everything on the Internet.

Many people find this way of life more convenient, because they can complete their daily chores(琐事) from the comfort of their own home.

Firstly, online shopping can be far less stressful than hitting the high street shops. There are no huge crowds of people or boring long queues. With online shopping, it's just you and your computer. It's like you have the whole shop to yourself! Secondly, online stores don't have opening and closing times. This is perfect for anyone with a busy schedule. If you want to, you can even place an online shopping order at three o'clock in the morning!

In the busy modern world, there are clearly many advantages to online shopping. However, in my experience, there are also several cons… With online shopping, you can't try before you buy, and that's a definite disadvantage for me. Often, when my new clothes arrive, I find they don't fit very well. It's always annoying when a dress is a little too big, or when sleeves are too short… Sometimes, the clothes are not what I was expecting. A piece of clothing might look great in photos online, but quite different in real life.

In these cases, you want to return the item, but here lies the biggest problem with online shopping. You have to pay for your order's delivery, and for an item to be returned to the warehouse! These charges are often very expensive, which suddenly make online shopping seem a little less convenient… That's why I don't choose to shop online very frequently. For now, I will continue to find the time for a trip to a real shop, where I know exactly what I'm buying!

William Butler Yeats, a most famous Irish writer, was born in Dublin on June 13, 1865. His childhood lacked the harmony that was typical of a happy family. Later, Yeats shocked his family by saying that he remembered "little of childhood but its pain". In fact, he inherited (继承) excellent taste in art from his family — both his father and his brother were painters. But he finally settled on literature, particularly drama and poetry.

Yeats had strong faith in the coming of new artistic movements. He set himself the fresh task in founding an Irish national theatre in the late 1890s. His early theatrical experiments, however, were not received favorably at the beginning. He didn't lose heart, and finally enjoyed success in his poetical drama.

Compared with his dramatic works, Yeats's poems attract much admiring notice. The subject matter includes love, nature, history, time and aging. Though Yeats generally relied on very traditional forms, he brought modern sensibility to them. As his literary life progressed, his poetry grew finer and richer, which led him to worldwide recognition.

He had not enjoyed a major public life since winning the Nobel Prize in 1923. Yet, he continued writing almost to the end of his life. Had Yeats stopped writing at age 40, he would probably now be valued as a minor poet, for there is no other example in literary history of a poet who produces his greatest works between the ages of 50 and 75. After Yeats's Death in 1939, W. H. Auden wrote, among others, the following lines:

    Earth, receive an honoured guest:

William Yeats is laid to rest.

Let the Irish vessel (船) lie

    Emptied of its poetry.
