Lt Zachary Mayo, a soldier in the USA Navy, woke up and couldn't get back to sleep. He felt too hot. He got off his bed quietly so as not to wake his shipmates. He put on his blue coat over his shorts and T-shirt- he had been sleeping in, and left for the deck (甲板).

Zachary Mayo went up onto the deck. It was two o'clock on a Friday morning. He breathed in the fresh air and looked up at the stars in the clear night sky. And then, without thinking, he leaned out too far and lost his footing. Before he knew it, he was in the water. He tried to draw attention by shouting, but he didn't succeed. He watched the huge ship disappearing into the night. Not one of the 4,700 crew on board had seen him fall, and for nearly two days, none of his shipmates realized that he was gone.

Mayo had been taught how to make clothes into life jackets in a training camp, so he took off his coat and tied its arms and legs. Then he waved his "life jacket" over his head and filled it with air so he could stay afloat (漂浮的). He did this many times during his floating on the sea.

During his floating on the sea for the following 34 hours, he didn't see many search planes or any boats, and twice he had seen sharks swimming around him. He was in the water for both nights. He was attacked by small fish and he was slowly dying of thirst. Mayo was sure he would die, but he thought of his family-his parents, wife and two-year-old son. "I can never give up with so much love," he said to. He wished miracle (奇迹) would happen.

Finally, he felt asleep. When he woke up, his coat were floating away from him. Feeling the death was approaching closer and closer, he tore off his T-shirt and shorts in a fit of madness and prepared to die.

Located in the checkroom in Union Station as I am, I see everybody that comes up the stairs. Harry came in a little over three years ago and waited at the head of the stairs for the passengers from the 9: 05 train.

I remember seeing Harry that first evening. He wasn't much more than a thin, anxious kid then. He was all dressed up and I knew he was meeting his girl and that they would be married twenty minutes after she arrived.

Well, the passengers came up and I had to get busy. I didn't look toward the stairs again until nearly time for the 9: 18 and I was very surprised to see that the young fellow was still there.

She didn't come on the 9: 18 either, nor on the 9: 40, and when the passengers from the 10: 02 had all arrived and left, Harry was looking pretty desperate. Pretty soon he came close to my window so I called out and asked him what she looked like.

"She's small and dark," he said, "and nineteen years old and very neat in the way she walks. She has a face," he said, thinking a minute, "that has lots of spirit. I mean she can get mad but she never stays mad for long, and her eyebrows come to a little point in the middle. She's got a brown fur, but maybe she isn't wearing it."

He showed me the telegram he'd received: ARRIVE THURSDAY. MEET ME STATION. LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE. MAY. He told me she was a typist and when he telephoned her former boss, all they know was that she left her job to get married.

Harry met every train for the next three or four days. I could see that they all thought that May had simply played a trick on him. But I never believed that, somehow.

An 80-year-old man was sitting on the sofa in his house along with his 45-year-old highly educated son. Suddenly a crow(乌鸦)perched(栖息)on their window.

The father asked his son, "What is this?" The son replied, "It is a crow."

After a few minutes, the father asked his son for the second time, "What is this?" The son said, "Father, I have just now told you, it's a crow!"

After a little while, the old father again asked his son for the third time, "What is this?"

At this time some expression of irritation(恼怒)was felt in the son's tone when he said to his father with a rebuff(生硬回绝). "It's a crow, a crow." A little while later, the father again asked his son the fourth time, "What is this?"

This time, the son shouted at his father, "Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again, although I have told you so many times 'IT IS A CROW'. Are you not able to understand this?"

A little while later the father went to his room and came back with an old tattered(发皱的)diary, which he had maintained since his son was born. On opening a page, he asked his son to read that page. When the son read it, the following words were written in the diary:

"Today my little son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa, when a crow was sitting on the window. My son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied to him all 23 times that it was a crow. I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question. I did not at all feel irritated but I rather felt affection for my innocent son,

 第二节 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Edward and Stephen were both eighteen years old. They were so together in friendship that they felt themselves to be brothers. They had known each other since childhood, growing up in the same block in Liverpool.

Edward was fair and lean, while Stephen was dark and short. Edward's brown hair was always falling over his eyes, while Stephen wore his black hair in a natural style.

Each youngster had a dream of someday becoming champion of the world. Whenever they had time, the boys worked out at the Fencing (击剑) Club. Early morning sunrises would find them running along the Mersey River, wrapped in sweatshirts, with short towels around their necks.

Edward and Stephen studied hard and dreamt positively. Between them, they had a notebook filled with torn tickets of every fencing match they had ever attended. They each had taken part in many elimination bouts(淘汰赛) and had won many gold medals. The difference was in their style.

As fencers, Edward's lean form and long reach made him better in attack, while Stephen's short and muscular frame made him speed y in movement. Whenever they had met in the piste (击剑台), it had always been intense and competitive.

After a series of elimination bouts, they were informed that they were to meet each other in the finals next month —the winner to represent the Club in the Championship Tournament.

Fencing was like any other profession. The two boys knew friendship had nothing to do with it. But how would the competition affect their relationship? Everyday they continued to run together along the Mersey River. However, while joking with each other, they both sensed an invisible wall rising between them.

The day before the finals, they met as usual for their daily workout. After a mile or so, Stephen stopped.

注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

"I think we both got something to say to each other." Stephen said.

As the two went onto the piste, the audience held their breath.
