The River Thames runs straight through the City of London. People have lived beside it for thousands of years. Like the sea, the river is tidal(有潮的). When the tide goes out, the muddy foreshore(泥泞的滩地) can be seen: For as long as people have been living beside this river, they have been throwing things into it such as rubbish, or maybe something valuable. The River Thames holds many secrets.

During the 18th century, many poor people would stand in the river's mud when the tide was out. They would search for hidden treasures. They did not expect to find anything of real value like coins or jewels (珠宝), but simple objects they could sell or trade for food. They were known as mud larks. The job was never easy, because the water could be freezing cold.

Today, people continue to search the foreshore for hidden treasures. It's different from over 200 years ago. All mud larks in the River Thames now need to have a license. Anything they find of historic interest has to be reported to the Museum of London.

Recently, Londoner Martin Bushel was mud larking. He found something that looked like the top of a human skull (头盖骨). He called the police and passed it onto them. When he was walking by the river a few days later, he saw some policemen searching the area. He was worried that he might become involved in a murder case(卷入一起谋杀案). Later he received a phone call telling him that what he had found was really from a human skull. However, it was5, 600 years old and was put on show in the Museum of London.

The Art of Paper

Chen Zijiang is a paper cutting expert whom I interviewed for my article on Chinese Art. Paper-cutting is something that he learned to do from an early age.

"It is a Chinese folk art with a long history," Mr. Chen told me, "Paper cuts of animals have been found in tombs. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}" He added that by the Southern Song Dynasty, paper-cutting had become an important part of everyday life.

{#blank#}2{#/blank#}They are paper cuts for decoration, for religious purposes (宗教目的) and for design patterns.

Paper cuts for decoration are often seen, on windows and gates. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}They are also used on presents. A present for parents whose child has recently been born might show a paper cut of children, for example. Paper cuts which show the Chinese character for double happiness are often used to celebrate weddings.

    Paper cuts for religious purposes are often found in temples{#blank#}4{#/blank#}

The third kind of paper cuts are these used to make patterns on clothing. They are also sometimes used to decorate jewelry (珠宝) boxes. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}.

A. They are usually put up during holidays to bring good luck.

B. They are also used as offerings to the dead.

C. Dragons are very popular patterns for these designs.

D. They can date back to the time of the Northern and Southern Dynasty.

E. Mr. Chen went on to explain that there are three types of paper cuts which people still make today.

Ten years ago, I took up studying luck. I wanted to know why some people are always in the right place at the right time, while others always experience ill luck. Many people volunteered for my research. Over the years I interviewed them, watched their lives and had them take part in my experiments(实验).

I carried out a simple experiment to discover why there were differences in their ability to find lucky chances. I gave both lucky and unlucky people a newspaper and asked them to look through it and tell me how many photographs were inside. I had secretly placed a large message halfway through the newspaper saying, "Tell the researcher you have seen this and win $50." This message took up half of the page and was more than two inches(英尺) high. It was looking at everyone straight in the face, but unlucky people tended to(倾向于) miss it and lucky people tended to notice it.

Unlucky people are just more nervous than lucky people. They are busy looking only for what they need and this stops them from noticing the unexpected. As a result, they miss out on chances. Lucky people tend to be more relaxed and open. They can see everything that is in front of them, rather than just what they are looking for.

My research shows that lucky people live by several principles(原则). Here are some of these principles:

* Listen to your gut instincts(直觉) — they are often right.

* Be open to new experiences and break your normal thought patterns.

* Spend a few moments each day remembering things that went well.

* See yourself being lucky before an important meeting or phone call.

On Saturday morning, every boy in town was happy, except Tom Sawyer. Tom's aunt said he had to paint the fence(围栏). It was thirty yards(码) long and three yards high! When he was working, some boys came along and made fun of him.

Ben was the first one who came happily with an apple in his hand.

"I'm going swimming," said Ben. "Do you want to come? Oh, you have to work, don't you?"

Tom got a little angry, but soon he had a wonderful idea.

"Work?" he said. "I don't think this is work. It's fun. Does a boy get a chance like this every day?"

Ben thought about this. He was watching Tom's every move and was getting more and more interested.

After a while, he said, "Tom, will you let me do some painting?"

"No way. You see. Aunt Polly wants it to be done properly. I'm the only one that can do it right."

"Oh, please, Tom," begged(恳求) Ben." I'll be really careful. Let me try! I'll give you my apple in return."

"Well, all right, Ben," said Tom. "But you must be careful."

He gave Ben his brush with worry on his face but joy in his heart. He started to eat Ben's apple.

All day, boys passed by and wanted to paint. When Ben got tired, Billy began to paint. He gave Tom his favorite kite. Then Johnny gave him twelve marbles(玻璃球), and so on.

That afternoon, Tom got many toys, and the fence got three coats of paint. Aunt Polly was so pleased when she saw the painted fence that she gave Tom a large cake!

①There are many different houses in the world. They can be different because people are different. The houses can also be different because of where they are. Houses can be made in many shapes.

②The dome house

Some people live in windy places. Big winds, like hurricanes, can blow houses down. In one place, a house was made in the shape of a dome. When a big hurricane came, it didn't blow down. However, all the other houses around it did. A dome house is made of triangle shapes. The shape of the dome house lets the wind go around it. A house with a flat wall is not as safe in a strong wind. A dome house doesn't have a roof to blow off. There is no wind in a dome house, so it is safer in a fire It is safe from termites(白蚁) , too. There is no wood for them to eat!

③A ball-shaped house

Some houses have been made in a shape like a ball. The walls, ceiling and floor are all one in a house with this shape. The wind moves around the outside of the house. Ball-shaped houses can be hung from things or float on water.

④____▲____

A house on the ground can take up a lot of space. A house in a tree doesn't use any space on the ground at all. No trees have to be chopped down to make room for these houses. And the tree housed can be built in the shape of bee nest(巢) . Such a house doesn't take very long to move to a new place. So it is helpful during the natural disasters.

⑤A walking house

Some people have made a house that can walk. It is the shape of a long hexagon(六边形). The house has six legs. It can walk over any ground. It can even walk over bumpy ground. When it walks, three legs are always on the ground. A walking house would be very good if there was a flood or a fire.

⑥Different shapes of house are so useful that different people can choose whatever they need. Which one do you prefer? Probably you can create another different shape of house one day!

Thanks to the Double Reduction Policy(双减政策),students now have less homework and more free time1Museums are fast becoming a hit with families in China,as Chinese parents find them helpful to inspire(激发)curiosity in their children.

Lin Yu,from Shenzhen,often takesher 1l-year-old son to museums,such as Shenzhen Museum and Shenzhen Science Museum. "My son has more free time of his own. We often go to Shenzhen Museum. It offers a practical learning experience. It's like taking a trip back in time to see how people lived,worked,and built amazing things. "Lin said.

More parents are hoping to broaden their children's horizons through museum visits. As a result, museums in Shenzhen have seen an increase in visits. Shenzhen Museum received 53,000 visits during the 2024 Chinese New Year holiday,and more than 70 percent are family visits.
