    Christmas Day was coming. I was just a kid then, and my big sister told me there was no Santa Claus. I fled to my Grandma because she would be straight with me. I knew Grandma always told me the truth. Grandma was home, and I told her everything. She was ready for me. "No Santa Claus !" She shouted. "Ridiculous! Don't believe it." That rumor has been going around for years, and it makes me mad, plain mad.

    "Now, put on your coat, and let's go."

    "Go where, Grandma?" I asked. "Where" turned out to be Kerby's General Store, the one store in town that had a little bit of just about everything. As we walked through its doors, Grandma handed me ten dollars. "Take this money, " she said, "and buy something for someone who needs it. I'll wait for you in the car." Then she turned and walked out of Kerby's.

    I was only eight years old. I'd often gone shopping with my mother, but never had I shopped for anything all by myself. The store seemed big and crowded, full of people competing to finish their Christmas shopping. For a few moments I just stood there, confused, holding that ten-dollar bill, wondering what to buy and who to buy it for. I suddenly thought of Bobby Decker, who was a kid with bad breath and messy hair. He sat right behind me in Mrs Pollock's grade-two class. Bobby Decker didn't have a coat. I knew that because he never went out for recess(放假) during the winter. His mother always wrote a note, telling the teacher that he had a cough, but we kids knew that Bobby Decker didn't have a cough, and he didn't have a coat. I would buy Bobby Decker a coat! I settled on a red one, which looked really warm, and he would like that.

    "Is this a Christmas present for someone?" the lady behind the counter asked kindly, as I laid my ten dollars down. "Yes."

    The nice lady smiled at me, put the coat in a bag and wished me a Merry Christmas.

    In 1945, a 12-year-old boy saw a beautiful brooch(胸针) in a shop window that set his heart racing. But the price—five dollars—was too high for Reuben Earle. Five dollars would buy almost a week's food for his family.

    Reuben couldn't ask his father for the money. Everything his father made through fishing went to his mother, Dora. Slim and beautiful, she was the center of the home, the glue that held it together. The housework was never-ending, and she struggled to feed and clothe their five children but she was happy as her family and their well-being were all she cared about.

    Nevertheless, he opened the shop's weathered(风化的) door and went inside. Standing proud and straight in his flour-sack（面粉袋改做的） shirt and washed-out trousers, he told the shopkeeper what he wanted, adding ,“But I don't have the money right now. Can you please hold it for me for some time？”

    “I'll try,” the shopkeeper smiled. “People around here don't usually have that kind of money to spend on things. It should keep for a while.”

    Reuben respectfully touched his worn cap and walked out. He would raise the money and not tell anybody, for he thought Mum would get surprised when she saw that brooch. On hearing the sound of hammering from a side street, Reuben suddenly had an idea that he could raise money by selling the used nail bags(装钉子的麻袋). People built their own homes in Bay Roberts, using nails bought in bags from a local factory. Sometimes the used bags were thrown away at the construction site, and Reuben knew he could sell them back to the factory for five cents a piece.

    That day he sold two nail bags and hid the money in a rusty soda tin(汽水罐).

    Until last year, the saddest thing of my life was that my wife Alice and I had no children. So we always invited all the children in our street to our house for Christmas breakfast.

    Last year, Alice died. I was very sad and decided not to invite the children for Christmas breakfast. But Kathy and Peter, my next door neighbors, asked me to join them for dinner on Christmas Eve.

    As soon as I arrived, Kathy asked me," Do you have any milk at your house?" "Yes," I replied. "If you need some, I'll go and get it right away."

    "Oh, that's OK. Come and sit down* Just give Peter the key and let him get it." said Kathy. Then I soon joined in the children's laughing and running. Before I knew it, Peter came back with a bottle of milk in his hand.

    The smell of the meal filled the room. We sat together and enjoyed the wonderful moment. Time flew between jokes. After a happy dinner, I said goodbye to them. With colorful and beautiful holiday lights shining outside, I headed home.

Anjali was confused. She wasn't trying to show off. She was just playing table （印度塔不拉鼓）， like everyone else. And why was Deepak being so mean lately? Is it because tabla is a boy's thing? She didn't care that people thought it was a boys' instrument. Anjali knew there was no such thing. She danced her fingers across the tabla to perform the composition in confusion. "Ugh!" Anjali heard someone groan, and she stopped playing. 

"I guess I don't know it that well after all, "Anjali said sheepishly to the teacher, Mr. Zakir. Her stomach was doing flip-flops. That wasn't true. Not even a little. Mr. Zakir's eyes narrowed. He looked like he was about to say something, but changed his mind. "The recital （演奏会） is next week, everyone. Keep practicing. I will be announcing who will get to perform onstage with me at my next concert! "Anjali had dreamed of a moment like that. She wanted to win the opportunity, but she needed to sort things straight with Deepak first. 

As the class was dismissed, Anjali hurried over to Deepak. When she finally made eye contact with him, he purposely looked away and walked off. The next day at school, Anjali overheard Deepak whispering to Mary. "People are only interested because she's the only girl in tabla class and they want her to feel special. She's not that good—" Anjali was furious. She excused herself and went to the bathroom. She took some deep breaths but couldn't relax. Her heart was pounding:

"It's not my fault that people make a big deal about a girl playing tabla. I make mistakes too, but I work really hard. Maybe he should too. He should be less mean and practice more."

"If I play in this concert, no one will talk to me again. He will turn everyone against me."

"I don't want to see a tabla or hear a tabla or play a tabla EVER AGAIN! ! Anjali yelled at the mirror. It was quiet for a moment. She believed it was one of her darkest days ever.
