One day when I was five years old, my mother took me to a swimming pool. She wanted to teach me how to swim.{#blank#}1{#/blank#} (sad), I was almost drowned(淹死，溺死).{#blank#}2{#/blank#} I was rescued by a man, my mother was so {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(frighten) that she decided never to let me get close to a swimming pool again.{#blank#}4{#/blank#}, I thought quite differently. Instead of letting that horrible incident create more fear around water for me, I decided to become a good {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(swim). After I told my mother about that, she thought I was right and {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(agree). So I started to learn how to swim again. My mother became more careful and I was not in danger again. Later I became {#blank#}7{#/blank#} interested in swimming that I decided to compete in swimming events. After years of efforts, my dream came true. I was the first African American {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(win) an Olympic Gold Medal in swimming. I did so at both 2008 and 2012 Olympics.

    Now I spend much of my time {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (help) children learn how to swim. Hundreds of children each year drown in the United States.{#blank#}10{#/blank#} (learn) how to swim can prevent 80% of these tragedies.

    Every year on the last weekend in August around 1.5 million people go to west London to take part in and enjoy one of the {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (large) street parties in Europe, Notting Hill Carnival.{#blank#}2{#/blank#} a colorful group of dancers, a wide range of music and {#blank#}3{#/blank#} atmosphere of fun and celebration, the carnival is not to be missed. The roots of the carnival date back to 1833 {#blank#}4{#/blank#} slavery was abolished. In that year the former slaves in Trinidad, a British colony in the Caribbean, took to the streets in celebration of their own carnival party with music, dance and costumes. Soon it {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (develop) into an important tradition throughout the Caribbean. In 1959 the first carnival took place in the St Pancras area of London. For the next few years, the Carnival _{#blank#}6{#/blank#}(celebrate) in different parts of London until it{#blank#}7{#/blank#}(final) came to Notting Hill in 1964. In 2003 the Notting Hill Carnival received royal {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(approve),when it joined the parade {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(mark) the Queen's 50th year on the throne(王位). The Carnival shows the {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(culture) diversity of modern London.

    Howard Carter is one of the most famous{#blank#}1{#/blank#} (explorer) the world has ever known. He was brave and loved {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (visit) and explore new places. During his life, he {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (discover) many amazing things.

    Howard Carter did not go to school, but learnt to draw from his father, {#blank#}4{#/blank#} was an artist. He was bright and curious {#blank#}5{#/blank#} the world outside his home town. In 1891, at the age of 17, {#blank#}6{#/blank#} set sail for Alexandria, Egypt. By the 1920s, he had become an explorer,{#blank#}7{#/blank#} (search) for the tombs of the Egyptian kings. He found several {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (importance) ones. Inside the tombs, he discovered a great fortune in jewels and gold, along {#blank#}9{#/blank#} the preserved bodies of dead kings. These{#blank#}10{#/blank#} (preserve) bodies are known as mummies.

    Museums keep history alive. Well; museums have great importance for people who{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(enjoy) history, or who are very{#blank#}2{#/blank#}(interest) in one particular subject. There are art museums, railroad museums, dollhouse museums, and museums of history, or the history of a certain area. There are many, many other types as well. For people who love paintings by very popular artists, but are too poor to buy a painting, art museums are probably {#blank#}3{#/blank#}only place for them{#blank#}4{#/blank#}(see)an original, Picasso, for example. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (visit) museums is a {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (wonder) and popular tourist activity.{#blank#}7{#/blank#} you go to a new country, seeing some of the history described at a museum is interesting and even fun. Sometimes the museums are {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (attract) than the most famous places of interest.

    I {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(visit) a couple of large dams (水坝) so far, and seeing the historical information about how the dams {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (build) is fascinating(吸引人的) to me. Obviously, not all the people like the same kind of museums. But I am sure that you can find one you enjoy.

    We could learn vocabulary while we are asleep. Researchers showed it is possible {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (learn) new information while sleeping deeply, and recall this information later. They did tests to see {#blank#}2{#/blank#} a person could remember new words and their translations while sleeping. The answer is yes. The language areas of the brain remember vocabulary during sleep, especially during deep sleep. While sleeping, our brain switches on for about half a second and then switches{#blank#}3{#/blank#} for half a second. The active state {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(call) "up-state". This is how our brain could learn new vocabulary.
