Baskin was a 20-year-old sophomore at the University of South Carolina whose parents ran small restaurant. As he was the only college student in his family, his family tried their best to support him. Baskin always worked as a waiter in the restaurant to lighten his parents' burdens. He was so hardworking that many customers praised his hospitable service. His parents also appreciated and trusted him a lot.

It was a busy night at the restaurant. After a few guests walked in and sat down, they ordered a bottle of the Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse 2001-a valuable wine worth almost €6,000.

Having to serve another table, Baskin then asked a workmate to fetch the bottle. However, since the employee was new, she accidentally took the wrong bottle of wine. Instead of the wine that was ordered by the customers, she served the Chateau Pichon Longueville Pomerol 2001, which cost about €5,000. As the bottles and names were similar, no one noticed the mistake.

Baskin didn't realize the mistake until the customers wanted to order a second bottle after finishing the first one. He checked the order quickly and understood what was wrong. He cleverly suggested they order a different one, without letting them know what had happened, which could give him time to think about how to solve the problem.

Everything seemed normal, but Baskin was lost in thought. "What should I do to solve this problem?" he asked himself. If he didn't tell the customers the mistake, he could keep the extra €1000 secretly. As he was also the cashier of the restaurant, no one would know what happened. €1000 was the tuition fee for the whole school year and his parents needn't work hard to earn money for him. Or he could use the money to buy his favorite laptop which his parents couldn't afford. This extra money was really a huge temptation to him. But in this way, he would lose his honesty and dignity.

Paragraph 1:

While he was struggling with his options, his father came over.

Paragraph 2:

When the customers came to pay the bill, with father's advice in mind. Baskin decided to do the right thing.

One pleasant New Year morning, Edward got up and dressed himself in a hurry. He wanted to be the first to wish everyone a happy New Year. He went into every room, and shouted the words of welcome. Then he ran into the street to repeat them to those he met. When he came back, his father gave him two bright, new silver dollars. His face lighted up as he took them. He had wished for a long time to buy some nice books that he had seen at the bookstore.

As he ran down the street with a light heart to the bookshop, he saw a poor German family—the father, mother, and three children shivering(发抖) in the cold wind.

"I wish you a happy New Year," said Edward, as he was happily passing by. The man shook his head. "You do not belong to this country?" asked Edward. The man again shook his head, for he could not understand or speak English. But he pointed to his mouth, and to the children, as if to say, "These little ones have had nothing to eat for a long time." Edward quickly understood that these people were poor and in a very difficult situation and required some help. He took out his dollars, and gave one to the man, and the other to his wife.

How their eyes sparkled (闪耀)with gratitude! They said something in their language, which doubtlessly meant, "We thank you a thousand times, and will remember you forever."

When Edward came home, his father asked what books he had bought. He hung his head a moment, but quickly looked up. "I have bought no books," said he, "I gave my money to some poor people, who seemed to be very hungry."

When I was 9 years old, I used to cut grass for Mrs. Long. The elderly lady paid me very little, for she hadn't much money. But she did promise me, "When Christmas comes, I shall have a present for you." I spent much time wondering what it would be. The boys I played with had baseball gloves and bicycles and ice skates, and I was so eager to acquire any one of these that I convinced myself that Mrs. Long intended choosing from among them.

"It would hardly be a baseball glove,"I reasoned with myself. "A woman like Mrs. Long wouldn't know much about baseball." Since she was old and weak, I also ruled out the bicycle, for how could she handle such a large item.

On my last Saturday at work, Mrs. Long said, "At Christmas you come to the door and collect the present." These words clinched(确定)my guess. Since she was going to have the present in her house and handle it herself, unquestionably she was giving me a pair of ice skates.

I became so convinced of this that I could imagine myself upon the skates and the excitement they brought me. As the cold days of November arrived and ice began to form on the ponds, I began to try my luck on the ice. " Get away from that ice! " a man shouted. " It's not strong enough yet."

As Christmas approached it was with difficulty that I restrained (抑制) myself from reporting to Mrs. Long and demanding my present. On the 21st of December, icy weather froze all the ponds so that boys who already had ice skates were able to use them. My longing to possess mine became overpowering.

So the next day I could control myself no longer and presented myself at Mrs. Long's door. "I've been waiting for you," she said with a smile.

Outside my kitchen window, there are people all over the place. We had lived in this house for a year and I knew everyone on the block, except Mrs. Miller, the old woman who lived by herself two doors down. She almost never left the house.

I thought it was time to get to know her. I carried my baby and set out to meet the neighbor. As I came to her house, Mrs. Miller's black dog looked at me. The dog was old, but she was always standing guard. I thought at least Mrs. Miller had someone to look after her. She needed more than a dog to rely on. I knocked on the front door.

"Come in!" Mrs. Miller said when she saw us, feeling a little surprised. "Have a seat here in the livingroom." I had only just sat down when her phone rang. Mrs. Miller received two phone calls.

When she answered and came back, she said, "I'm sorry, dear. It's just the neighbors calling to check in. Susan on the street was asking if she could pick up my groceries (食品杂货). The boys next door offered to take care of my garden."

"How nice it is," I thought. "Do you have children?" I asked. "No. It was just Mr. Miller and myself until he passed away." "I'm so sorry," I said. "You must have family. n She replied, "A sister. But we're both in poor health and it's difficult for us to visit each other." She pointed to her painful legs.

"Can you get to a doctor?" I asked. She said, "Oh, there's a nurse who usually comes to check on my health." Then her face became serious. She added, "Margo used to pick up my medicine every Monday. But she has just moved out of town."

I knew what she was thinking: What would she do without Margo?

Paragraph 1:

"I could take over for Margo," I said.

Paragraph 2:

When Christmas arrived, I decided to help Mrs. Miller prepare for the festival.

At Piedmont School, everyone wanted to be on the soccer team. Laura had dreamed of earning glory for the Falcons ever since she had witnessed her older brother scoring the winning goal. On the day she joined the team, she felt like she could fly.

Unfortunately, her joy did not last long. She spent most of the matches on the bench. Walking to the car after the last game, Laura's mother asked if she was feeling fine. Laura kept quiet and tried to smile at her mother. Having spent yet another game as a reserve, Laura had not even broken a sweat. Laura also joked that she would have baked in the hot sun if she had played. Her mother assured her that she would have another chance to play. She also cheered Laura on. Laura could only shake her head as she climbed into the seat, back hunched and face down.

A few days later, Laura's mother found she sprawled on the couch, watching music videos on her phone, so she tried asking Laura to watch soccer videos instead. Laura looked at her mother blankly, rolling her eyes. "They won't help me and I can't get better by myself," Laura said.

Sighing, her mother sank down on the couch. "Laura, for every lock, there is a key. We just have to find it. What if I film you practicing to help you find ways to improve?"

"But the season's over, Mum. No more practice, remember?" Laura said. Her mother looked at her resolutely and insisted that the best players keep practicing even when the season is over. Laura protested, "But to practice plays, I would need at least one other person to join me! It is difficult to do that alone."

Laura's mother patted her and said, "We'll find that key too, but we have to start somewhere." While Laura's mother was searching her wallet for her gold key, she smiled gently at Laura. She gave Laura an assuring no d before passing her the key. "This key is a reminder for you to be strong and not give up. Let's build something tomorrow." Laura's mother said.

注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;

The next day, Laura and her mother built a goal and made a training plan.

Then came the next season. On the field, one of the best players got hurt suddenly.

James, a 24-year-old investment banker from Toronto, was just one week into his new job on Wall Street. Over the past month, he'd been settling in to the New York City apartment he was sharing with his college friend, an artificial intelligence engineer named Raphael.

Now, last week, the two were going to meet in a lunchtime on Pier (码头) 15, overlooking the East River, when James froze. "Somebody's in the water," he said. Before Raphael could respond, James climbed over the rail (栏杆) at the edge of the pier and jumped into the cold, polluted water without taking the time to remove his shoes.

What James had heard was an alarmed fisherman shouting from Pier 16, nearly 50 yards away, "Help! He's in the water!" And what he'd seen was a person floating, lifeless.

Raphael didn't need to see the victim. Maybe James saw someone in the water who needs our help, he thought. Or maybe it's James who needs my help. Either way, I'm going in. He took off his shoes and dived.

Approaching the unconscious victim, James saw that it was a middle-aged man. He was big, around 200 pounds, respectably dressed and sinking fast. He was 3 feet below the surface by the time James reached him. The rescuer dived, felt around, grasped the man and kicked upward until they both got out of the surface. Raphael was there now. In the water, the two friends floated the man on his back. As Raphael put his arms around the man's shoulders and James supported the bottom and knees, the pair pulled the man back to Pier 15. Their lungs heaved and their muscles burned as they pushed and pulled the immobile figure through the water.

They might have been dragging a dead body. The man's skin was blue, and neither Raphael nor James detected any breathing. When at last they reached Pier 15, they faced a new uncertainty. How to get out of the water? The shore was half meter above their heads.

注意:1. 写词数应为150左右;2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

On the pier, a crowd had gathered.

……

Suddenly the man moved, breathing again.
