    On a cold windy day, a poor boy tried to pay his way through school by selling goods door to door. Wandering on the street, he was not a successful seller. What's worse, he found that he only had one dime（一角硬币） left. His empty stomach reminded him constantly that for days he hadn't eaten anything. He had no choice but to beg for a meal at the next house. Hesitantly he knocked at door, thinking about what to say when it opened. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. “What can I do for you?” asked the young woman. The boy paused for a while “Would you please give me some … a drink of water?” the boy dare not to look directly into her eyes. She looked at the bony boy and thought he might need something to give him energy so she brought him a glass of milk. His head rising and small hands taking the cup, he drank it up slowly, and then asked, “How much do I owe you?” “You don't owe me anything,” she replied with a warm smile on her face. “My mother has taught me never to accept pay for a kindness.” Deeply moved, he said sincerely, “Then I shall thank you from the bottom of my heart.” As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but it also increased his faith in God and the whole human race. As a matter of fact, he was about to give up and quit before that point.

    Years later the young woman became critically ill. However, the local doctors were unable to give the effective medical treatment. Finally they sent her to a hospital in the big city, where specialists can be called in to cure her rare disease. Among those famous specialists, Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately, he rose and went down through the hospital hall into her room.

    I went up to the roof for a break after studying for an hour and watched the 50 or so people swimming in the natural rock pool below our house. It was a sunny day-a blue, cloudless sky over a calm sea. But then, as I looked in the distance, I discovered a series of three or four big waves heading towards the shore. I'd seen these mini- tsunamis(海啸) many times before. They were heading at speed in the direction of the pool. Most people knew how to look out for them, but from the screams that started coming from the beach, I could tell someone was in trouble.

    Without thinking, I ran down into the street, holding my body board(俯伏冲浪板) on the way and shouted at a stranger to go inside my house and call the coastguard. My neighbor Moises had heard the screaming as well and was also outside with his body board, so together we rushed to the steps that led down to the sea.

    Once we got closer, we discovered the waves had pulled a boy and a girl from the pool and into the open sea. I knew that the nearest boat would take at least 30 minutes to reach us. Waiting for help wasn't a choice. I wasn't used to this sort of emergency- I'd never been trained as a lifeguard-but I didn't think twice about trying to save them. I supposed in a way I wanted to impress everyone: at 19, a deal like that can seem like a good opportunity to show off.

    Moises and I dived into the water and it took us 10 minutes to get to them. When we finally reached them, they were almost lifeless with only their heads coming in and out of the water. We could tell they were still alive from their small breaths but it was clear they wouldn't have been able to stay there much longer. I hold the boy and pulled him over my board. Moises moved the girl on to his board. We discussed pushing them back to the shore, but we were too far out.

    We had to wait,

    That night, word came from the hospital that the two people were in good condition.

Another 10 minutes past, there's no response. The postman got a bit cross about the delay, and he was about to shout when the door opened. He was shocked to see in front of him was a little girl with no legs. Speechless, he gave the letter quietly, took her signature and left. That day he got her name, Sally.

Sally often lived alone. Her mother died at an early age and her father used to work far away. A maid (女仆) was invited to stay with her in the morning and evening except the day. In a month or two, mails were delivered regularly, and their interaction and attachment grew. Sally noticed that the postman used to come barefoot(赤脚). Rainy season came. One day when the postman left her home, his footprints were left on wet soil. Sally struggled out with a paper and put it on print and took down the picture of his feet. She asked her maid to get shoes of that size and kept them in a box.

Diwali (排灯节) was around the corner. During Diwali, the postman used to deliver mails and got Diwali gifts from the people who got mails. But when he thought about Sally, he started thinking that he shouldn't meet the girl empty-handed during the festival. After much thought he bought some chocolate for the little girl. The next day, he went to the little girl's house and knocked.

As I unzipped my lunchbox, the whole place was turned into a spicy curry (咖喱) dream. I immediately hid it under my seat, hoping no one would take notice.

As I made my way over, memories of those awkward lunchtimes when I studied in Kansas, one of the most conservative states, flooded back. I could still recall how everyone would wrinkle their noses and stare curiously when I unpacked my Indian food. It always made me feel like an outsider, like I didn't belong.

Therefore, before my first day in this school, I had demanded my mom pack "normal" western-style food for me. I still remembered the look on her face upon hearing it, as she signed in disappointment and confusion, "Isn't there a moment when you feel proud of your origin?" That was hurting, but not more hurting than others' giggles and whispers. Honestly, long queues were common in Indian restaurants in New York city, a cultural melting pot, but I wouldn't take that risk.

Unfortunately, this morning, Mom had forgotten to make sandwich or any "normal" food, so I had to bring leftovers from our dinner. At the thought of the possible "oh-no" seconds, I felt like being thrown into darkness.

However, before I came back to reality, Ricky noticed my sneaking (躲躲藏藏). "What do you have for lunch?" he asked, his eyes twinkling with interest. I tried to brush it off (搪塞), claiming I wasn't hungry. But Ricky wouldn't let it go, and before I could protest, he had the lid of my lunchbox open and I prepared myself for such familiar responses as "Ew" or "What is that?"
