Nearly everyone has spent at least one night lying in bed wishing for sleep. But for many, it's a nightly struggle. The key, or secret, is to experiment. What works for some might not work as well for others.

Set a regular bedtime. Go to bed at the same time every night.  Try not to break this routine on weekends when it may be attractive to stay up late. If you want to change your bedtime, help your body adjust (调整).

 If you're getting enough sleep, you should wake up on time naturally without an alarm.  As with your bedtime, try to keep your regular wake﹣up time even on weekends.

Be smart about napping (打盹). Though taking a nap can be a great way to become energetic again, especially for older adults, it can make insomnia (失眠)worse.  If you must nap, do it in the early afternoon, and limit it to thirty minutes.

Fight after﹣dinner drowsiness (睡意). What should you do when getting sleepy before your bedtime? For example, washing the dishes, or calling a friend. If you give in to the drowsiness, you may wake up later in the night and have difficulty getting back to sleep.

A. Wake up at the same time every day.

B. Spend more time outside in the daytime.

C. When it's time to sleep, make sure the room is dark.

D. Get off the couch and do something to avoid falling asleep.

E. If insomnia is a problem for you, consider giving up napping.

F. It's important to find the sleep methods that work best for you.

G. Choose a time when you normally feel tired so that you can fall asleep easily.

    About a year ago, I had a terribly hurtful experience where a close friend spread untruths(谎言) about me. Because I value my friendships so highly, when a friend hurts my feelings, it cuts me deeply. Perhaps it's unfair for me to hold my friends to the same standard I set for myself as a friend.{#blank#}1{#/blank#}

    Be honest with yourself.

    Often times, hurtful behaviour starts off with a small thing that you forgive quickly. You love your friend and believe she'd never hurt you on purpose. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} And slowly you realize your friend may not be the person you thought she was when you first met her. Being honest with your own feelings will help you be honest and open with her.

    {#blank#}3{#/blank#}

    As the situation unfolded(发展), I learned more about what she'd said and done. Thankfully, my cooler head won, and I realized her actions actually had nothing to do with me. I chose to let the anger go and move on with my life.

    Walk away and don't look back.

    Making the decision to leave a friendship can sometimes feel as hard as deciding to leave your marriage. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} But when that hole is open, you will soon realize that your close, real friends will close it quickly. I chose to walk away from a harmful friendship. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Certainly I don't miss the hurt and pain she brought to my heart. It's her loss, really, because I am a good friend.

A. Let the anger go.

B. And I don't regret it for a minute.

Five tips for safe running

    We all know that exercise is good for our health. But some kinds of exercise may be better than others. Running, for example, may help to protect against heart disease and other health problems.

    Running is good exercise, but it can be hard on the body. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

    Take it easy. Do not run too much, too soon or too fast. Most people get running injuries when they push themselves too bad. The body needs time to get used to increases in distance or speed.{#blank#}2{#/blank#}

    Listen to your body. Most running injuries do not come unexpectedly. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} They may include body aches, sore muscles(肌肉酸痛) and pain that does not go away.

     {#blank#}4{#/blank#} There is no single best shoe for every runner. You should find the shoes that offer the best fit and support for your feet. More importantly, you should replace your shoes every 500 to 800 kilometers.

    Take good notes. Take time after each run to write down what you did and how you felt. Look for patterns, things that happen over and over again. These notes will help you find the best exercise for you.

    Cross train. As we said earlier, running is hard on your body. So physical fitness experts suggest some form of cross training to improve muscle balance and to help you stay injury free. They say swimming, yoga, and riding a bicycle are good exercises to combine with running. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}

A. Get good running shoes.

B. Usually, there are warning signs.

C. Running may also help you live longer.

D. These exercises are easier on the body.

E. Muscles and joints (关节) need time to recover.

F. As advertisements for the running shoes Nike say, “Just do it.”

    One of the biggest reasons people drop an exercise program is lack of interest. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} The good news is there are tons of different sports and activities to try to see which one inspires you.

    When picking the right type of exercise, it can help to consider your workout personality. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} If so, solo sports like running, biking, or snowboarding could be for you. Or do you like the shared motivation and companionship that comes from being part of a team? School sports, intramural leagues, club teams, and pick-up games are great ways to stay active with others.

    {#blank#}3{#/blank#} For example, whether your chosen activity is affordable and available to you (Activities like horseback riding may be harder for people who live in cities, for example.) You'll also want to think about how much time you can set aside for your sport.

    It's a good idea to talk to someone who understands the exercise, like a coach or fitness expert at a gym. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}

    Doctors know that most people benefit from regular exercise, even those with disabilities. If you have a health problem or other concern (like being overweight or very out of shape), talk to your doctor before beginning an exercise plan.

    Considering the benefits to the heart, muscles, joints, and mind, it's easy to see why exercise is wise. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Even small things can count as exercise when you're starting out -like taking a short bike ride, walking the dog, or raking leaves.

A. Without fun, it is hard to keep it up.

B. You also need to plan around practical considerations.

C. You have to make a list of your favorite exercises, too.

D. He or she can get you started on a program that's right for you.

E. Different types of exercise can strengthen different muscle groups.

F. And the great thing about exercise is that it's never too late to start.

G. For example, you may like to work out alone and on your own schedule.

根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

A. Sometimes you may need advice on breaking bad habits from other people.

B. First, you may ask yourself how you feel about a habit.

C. You may come up with a plan to break your bad habits.

D. Meanwhile, keep a diary of the bad habits you desire to change.

E. Sometimes the truth hurts.

F. Otherwise there is an empty space in your life where the bad habit could go back.

G. There are times when it can be difficult to identify your bad habits.

    While it is important to maintain good habits, it is equally important to learn how to break bad habits if you want to achieve success in life. Here are some tips to get you started.

    The first step in breaking bad habits is to identify them. Only after identifying them can you decide to do something about them. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} For example, you may ask yourself: Is the habit holding me back from achieving my goal? Does the habit make me feel good or bad?

    {#blank#}2{#/blank#} Then you may listen to the things that people say about you. Are people saying the same negative things about you? It's easy to become defensive when someone says something about us we don't like, and let's face it. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}

    Once you have identified your bad habits, it's time to break them. First, you should introduce something new and meaningful in your life to replace the bad habit. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} If you hung around at the bars after work, replace it by going to the gym instead. Or if you sat and watched TV for hours, you may work on a task that needs to be done.

    {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Write down the efforts you make to change them, and also the results of your actions. And write down how you feel when you successfully change one of your bad habits. If you can read and reflect on how you feel about the progress you've made, it may motivate you to continue to work on changing other things.
