On Christmas Eve (平安夜), Simon usually has a party with his family in his house. They buy a Christmas tree and decorate(装饰)it with flowers, toys, lights and cards. After they finish, it looks very beautiful. Then they have a big Christmas dinner. There is turkey, hot drinks and much other Christmas food on the table. After dinner, they sit under the Christmas tree and sing songs happily. They all have a lot of fun.

When I was fourteen, I made my first visit to the United States. It wasn't the first time I had been abroad. Like most English children, I learned French at school. And I had often been to France, so I was used to speaking a foreign language to people who didn't understand French. I believed that I wouldn't have any 1 problems when I went to America. So I was really looking forward to having a nice easy holiday there.

How2 I was! The misunderstanding (误解) began at the airport. I was looking for a public telephone to call my friend Danny who had been in America for two years and told her that I had arrived. A friendly old man saw me looking confused and asked if he could 3 me.

"Yes," I said, "I want to give my friend a ring."

"Well, that's nice," he said. "Are you getting married? But aren't you a bit too 4 ?"

"Who is talking about marriage?" I replied. "I just want to give my friend a ring to tell her I've arrived. Can you tell me 5 the phone box is?"

"Oh! I see. " he said, "There's a phone downstairs."

When Danny and I met up, she explained the misunderstanding to me. Then I knew "Give somebody a ring" could mean deciding to get engaged or marry someone else. I felt shamed for myself.

"Don't worry," she said to me. "I had so many difficulties at first. There are lots of words which the Americans use differently in meaning from the British. You'll soon 6 all the funny things they say. Most of the time British and American people understand each other!

Pan Yuzhen, 77, comes from Taijiang County, Guizhou Province. She is an inheritor(继承人) of Miao embroidery(刺绣).

" The girls in my hometown can embroider at an early age. When I was five years old, I learned embroidery from my mother and sister. Miao embroidery skills are not easy to learn, but I have learned all embroidery methods," Pan said. At first, Pan embroidered for her own use, but as she grew older and married, her skills were put to use for her family, creating beautiful embroidered clothes.

Pan's daughter Zhang Yammei, who was born in 1977, suffered from an illness at the age of three. To treat her daughter and feed the family, Pan embarked on (开始) a journey, travelling to different cities to sell her Miao embroidery products.

In 1999, Zhang went to Beijing to join her mother. At that time, Pan had a store in a market. Here, she met a lot of foreign friends who were attracted by her embroidery skills and encouraged her to expand her business abroad." They advised me to go to foreign countries and sell cultural and creative products. Then I went to the US to do business connected with Miao embroidery," Pan said.

In 2016, Pan's career took a huge leap forward as she worked with a famous clothing brand in China . With the help of the brand, Pan went to the UK to take part in different fashion shows. Now Pan is well- known. Pan hopes more young people can inherit Miao embroidery skills.

Simon didn't get on well with his parents in the past. He hardly {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(talk)to them, because they always compared him with his sister Sarah. They thought Sarah studied {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(hard)than Simon. Simon was not happy with that.

Later, Simon wanted to show his parents that he could do things as well {#blank#}3{#/blank#}his sister.Then he started to spend most of his free time in the art room. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (luck), the art teacher Miss Green taught Simon a lot. She tried to help bring out the best in {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(he).

One day,Simon told Miss Green about his problem. Miss Green said to Simon,"Your works are {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(good)than many children's. You can take part in a painting {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(compete).Your parents will know how great you are!"So Simon did it.

After {#blank#}8{#/blank#} few weeks, the result came out. Simon was very excited {#blank#}9{#/blank#} he won first place. His parents felt surprised. Then they were happy for Simon. They realized (认识到)that different {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(kid)were good at different things.

Sally: Of course I did. I went to the West Lake in Hangzhou last summer.

Sally: Yes. I went with my grandparents. They like China a lot.

Li Hua: You're right. Hong Kong is a great place for you to buy many things. 

Sonia is 14. She couldn't stand Beijing Opera（京剧） in the past. She thought it was boring. Like most of other students, Sonia liked popular music. This year her parents got new jobs in Beijing, so she came to Beijing with them. Then she started to study at No. 15 Middle School. 

Sonia learns Beijing Opera in music class every Friday. She learns a lot about Chinese history from Beijing Opera. Little by little (一点点地) she gets interested in Beijing Opera. Now she likes to see Beijing Opera on TV. And she joins her school Beijing Opera club. "Beijing Opera is a kind of Chinese old art, " Sonia said. "If one goes to learn it, he or she will like the country more. "
