Several years ago, I spent most of my time at a mental hospital (精神病院) in our town. I found much joy there. At first it was a little scary to be there, but I stayed on, because I had a reason for doing this.

I volunteered in a locked-up (封闭的) environment. To my surprise, I found that a friend of my parents' was a patient in this hospital. I knew, when I was a baby, this woman wanted to keep me because she had no children. I looked after this woman and showed my old photos to her. Finally, she was able to remember some old things, and she said to me one day, "Dear, you should not come here." But I wanted to bring something happy into this woman's life. I learned that because she had no family, she couldn't leave here and go home. So I brought her to my home twice and I still remembered the happy smile on her face.

I have never forgotten this volunteering experience. This woman later passed    away. I can't see her anymore, but I'm happy that I have done something to make a difference in another person's life.

The year 2024 celebrates the Year of the Dragon. Among the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac (生肖), the dragon is the only one that is not real. Though it looks scary, Chinese people respect it and even see themselves as the "descendants (后代) of the dragon".

Wen Yiduo (1899—1946), a well—known Chinese scholar (学者) of his time, said that the idea of a Chinese dragon formed gradually during tribal (部落的) wars. When a strong tribe that highly respected snakes beat other tribes, the tribe mixed the features of its enemies' totem (图腾) animals with its own to create something truly strong.

Guo Dashun, an archaeologist (考古学家), believes that the idea of a dragon began to grow in northeastern China. There, in Fuxin city, Liaoning province, archaeologists found in 1982 what appeared to be a dragon made up of granite (花岗岩) pieces. Dating back to 6000 BC, it is the oldest craft (工艺品) that looks like a dragon.

In northeastern China, archaeologists also found many small jade (玉) dragons that date back to as early as 3500 BC. 

"If you look really closely, they "look like" ... a newborn – be it a pig, a bear, or a deer ..." said Teng Shu—ping, a leading scholar from Taiwan who studies ancient Chinese jade. 

These jade dragons, created by people whose society and art were still in the early time, show "a deep—felt surprise with the [changing] force of life," she said. She said this is what gives the Chinese dragon its "heartbeat ".

Last summer, I went to Yunnan on vacation. Let me tell you about my trip there. 

Yunnan is in the south of our country. It is really a very beautiful place with high mountains, clean rivers and friendly people. Trees and flowers are 1 . Every year, a lot of 2 spend their holidays in Yunnan. 

On the 3 day, I visited the Stone Forest (石林). There are different kinds of stones. Of all the stones, the stone which 4 a beautiful girl named Ashima is the most famous. I took a lot of photos that day. I went to Lijiang on the second day. A river runs 5 the whole town. The river can help you know 6 you are and how to get to different places. If you don't go along the river, 7 you will get lost. I really enjoyed walking around the town. There I saw many buildings. Some of them are new, but some of them are very old. I 8 what life was like there in the past. On the third day, I went to Kunming Zoo. In the zoo, I saw some cute animals, such as elephants, monkeys and peacocks (孔雀). In the evening, I tried Yunnan Cross-Bridge Rice Noodles for dinner. They were really 9 ! I liked them very much.

Have you ever wondered how many ants there are on the earth? Scientists at the University of Hong Kong certainly have. In a new study, they estimated (估计) the number of the world's ants is about 20, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000(20 with 15 zeroes!

That means for every human, there are nearly 2. 5 million ants. If you put all the ants on a scale, they'd weigh more than all the wild birds and mammals (哺乳动物) on the earth. 

How did they count such a big number? In the past, many scientists have counted ants in different areas. They collected fallen leaves and earth and dried them to force the ants to come out for counting. Based on 465 studies that cover the whole land, the new study made the estimation. According to Wang Runxi, one of the authors, the number and distribution(分布) of ants can be valuable to show the environmental changes. 

"Ants play an important role in the ecosystem, " Wang told Science and Technology Daily. "They help loosen the soil, spread seeds, break down things and form a part of the food chain (食物链). They are everywhere on the earth except for the coldest places. "

"Compared with big animals, little ants are more sensitive (敏 感 的 ) to environmental changes, " Wang added. Most ants live in tropical (热带的) and subtropical(亚热带的) areas. But in recent years, ants have been moving toward the two poles because of global warming. Changes in forests, such as too many trees being cut down, also have influence on the number of ants, the study showed. 

"Our global map of ants allows us to better understand and predict ants' responses to worrying environmental changes, " scientists wrote in the study.
