The adobe dwellings (土坯房)  {#blank#}1{#/blank#}  （build）by the Pueblo Indians of the AmericanSouthwest are admired by even  {#blank#}2{#/blank#} most modern of architects and engineers. In addition to their simple beauty, what makes the adobe dwellings admirable is their  {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (able) to “air condition” a house without  {#blank#}4{#/blank#}( use) electric equipment. Walls made of adobe take in the heat from the sun on hot days and give out that heat   {#blank#}5{#/blank#}( slow) during cool nights, thus warming the house. When a new day breaks, the walls have given up their heat and are now cold enough  {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(cool) the house during the hot day;{#blank#}7{#/blank#} the same time, they warm up again for the night. This cycle       (go) day after day: The walls warm up during the day and cool off during the night and are thus always a timely offset(抵消) for the outside temperatures. As {#blank#}9{#/blank#}  (nature) architects, the Pueblo Indians figured out exactly {#blank#}10{#/blank#}  thick the adobe walls needed to be to make the cycle work on most days.

    Joris Hutchison, 10 years old, of Seattle, has worked hard all year to save cheetahs（猎豹）from the very real threat of extinction. He has raised more than $14,000 to purchase GPS devices, {#blank#}1{#/blank#} follow and protect the animals. He earns money by selling lemonade, flowers and T-shirts, and by {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(organize) skating parties and a garage sale. What moved the public {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(be) that Joris donated all that he raised to a wildlife conservation organization and shelter in Namibia where he and his mother have volunteered for {#blank#}4{#/blank#} past three summers.

    As the group's {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(young) of all the volunteers, Joris prepares food, cleans enclosures（围场）, and creates improvement {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(item) for the cheetahs that live there, all of whom {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(injure) or raised by human beings in the past. The shelter protects cheetahs in the wild by convincing farmers not {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(shoot) the animals and instead, to allow the ones accused {#blank#}9{#/blank#} killing farm animals to be fixed with GPS devices. “I've learned that everyone can make a {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(different), even if you're just a kid!” Joris told Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes. “You just have to start somewhere.”

    The party began shortly after nine. Mr. Wood, who lived in the flat below, sighed to himself as he heard {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (excite) voices and the noisy music. Luckily, he had brought some work home from the office, with {#blank#}2{#/blank#} he kept himself busy for a couple of hours, thus managing to pay no attention {#blank#}3{#/blank#} the noise overhead. But by eleven o'clock he felt tired and was ready to go to bed though from his {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (early) experience he knew it was no use {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (try) to get to sleep. He undressed and {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (lie) for a while in bed, trying to read, but he found himself reading the same page over and over again. He then turned off {#blank#}7{#/blank#} light and buried his head in the pillow. But even so he could not shut off the noise. Finally, after {#blank#}8{#/blank#} seemed hours, his patience was gone.

    He jumped out of bed, put on some clothing, marched firmly up the stairs, and walked into his neighbor's apartment. The owner of the apartment came across the room and, {#blank#}9{#/blank#} Mr. Wood could say anything, cried, “My dear fellow, come and join us. I know our parties would trouble you. I meant to send you an invitation.” Mr. Wood's anger disappeared then and there. He said, “I'd better go and get changed.” Minutes later, he returned, {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (proper) dressed, only to find that the party was nearly over.

    Looking out of the window of his Ford truck, Bob Fitzgerald sees large, undesirable plants growing in the fields.{#blank#}1{#/blank#} (visitor) to his neighborhood in Princess Anne, Maryland {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(main) see dying forests and empty farmland.

    Fitzgerald says the land{#blank#}3{#/blank#}(be) in his family for over 3 centuries. "I'd say in the next 20 years. You're going to lose{#blank#}4{#/blank#}very high percentage of that land."

    The land around the Chesapeake Bay has been sinking for hundreds of years. But climate change is making things{#blank#}5{#/blank#}(bad). As sea level rises, salt water is entering rivers and other waterways. As a result, the ground is becoming too salty for crops{#blank#}6{#/blank#}(grow) on.

    Maryland's Eastern Shore is home to some of the oldest farms in North America.

    Fitzgerald says he has seen big changes during his life.

    "You just can't believe{#blank#}7{#/blank#}it's been taking things over in the last 15 or 20 years. I can show you land around here that people raised tomatoes on when I was a little boy. And now it's gone."

    Around the world, scientists warn that coastal farms are under{#blank#}8{#/blank#}(threaten) from rising seas and salt water. A World Bank report estimates rice production in coastal areas of Bangladesh may fall{#blank#}9{#/blank#}15 percent by the year 2050. Another study found hundreds of millions of people will{#blank#}10{#/blank#}(force) to move inland because of rising waters.
