I used to live in San Paulo, Brazil.

    It is a huge city with more people{#blank#}1{#/blank#} (live) in it than in my own country. I rented a flat in a wealthy community, but there was a favela（贫民窟）quite near. For several months I didn't have a car, so I used public transportation to go to the city centre.

    Once,{#blank#}2{#/blank#}my way back, I had to wait for a long time at a bus stop. I was alone, except for a woman {#blank#}3{#/blank#} was apparently very poor. She carried a small paper bag of popcorn.

    While{#blank#}4{#/blank#}were waiting, she walked over and offered me some popcorn. I thanked her,{#blank#}5{#/blank#}I didn't want to help myself to it. She repeatedly {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(insist) that I take some from the paper bag.

    I was so moved by that woman's{#blank#}7{#/blank#}(kind) that day. I clearly had more than she did, but she naturally and joyfully shared {#blank#}8{#/blank#}she had with me.

    Some students who had graduated visited their university professor. The conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life. To offer his guests coffee, the professor went to the kitchen and {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(return) with a pot of coffee and {#blank#}2{#/blank#} variety of cups—porcelain, plastic, glass, some plain-looking, some expensive—telling them to help {#blank#}3{#/blank#} to the coffee.

    The world's longest sea bridge {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (call) the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge has opened. The bridge {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (link) Hong Kong and Macau to mainland China. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} took more than a decade to construct it. Builders had to make artificial islands in the Pearl River Delta {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (provide) the supports for the bridge. There is also a 6.7-kilometre underwater tunnel in the middle of the bridge, {#blank#}5{#/blank#} allows ships to sail through the Delta.     Chinese President Xi attended the opening ceremony of the bridge. He hopes the new crossing will help to connect 68 million people in 11 different {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (city). China's government believes that up to 29,000 cars will cross the sea link daily by the year 2030. A trade and tourism expert said, “This makes Hong Kong a lot more accessible for goods, passengers and trade, so this is a benefit {#blank#}9{#/blank#}the economic perspective.” The bridge will be open to tourists to drive across it. However, local car owners will not be able to cross the bridge {#blank#}10{#/blank#} they have a special permit. Most drivers will take a shuttle bus to make the journey.

    A few people have lucid (清醒的) dreams, in {#blank#}1{#/blank#} the dreamer is aware they're dreaming and can control the experience. Some others can learn {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (have) lucid dreams. The practice can be used to deal with frightening dreams. However, its potential has been limited by it often {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (be) so hard to achieve. Now, researchers have developed the most effective method yet for promoting lucid dreams.

    The researchers let 121 adults aged 19 to 75 pick something {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (see)in a previous dream. It was called a "dreamsign" that can serve {#blank#}5{#/blank#} a reminder to become lucid when met again. The {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (volunteer) were then handed capsules. Each person got a high-dose (大剂量的) capsule, a low-dose capsule and a placebo (无效对照剂) capsule, but they couldn't tell which was which. On three occasions, they woke in {#blank#}7{#/blank#} middle of the night, took a capsule, imagined their dreamsign and went back to sleep. The high dose was most effective, causing lucid dreams in 42 per cent of participants. About 27 per cent {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (report) lucid dreams with the low dose and 14 per cent after taking the placebo capsule.

    The potential applications are {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (excite). "This new method has the success rate we need to be able to {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (proper) do research on lucid dreaming," says Denholm Aspy at the University of Adelaide in Australia.
