I used to live in San Paulo, Brazil.

    It is a huge city with more people{#blank#}1{#/blank#} (live) in it than in my own country. I rented a flat in a wealthy community, but there was a favela（贫民窟）quite near. For several months I didn't have a car, so I used public transportation to go to the city centre.

    Once,{#blank#}2{#/blank#}my way back, I had to wait for a long time at a bus stop. I was alone, except for a woman {#blank#}3{#/blank#} was apparently very poor. She carried a small paper bag of popcorn.

    While{#blank#}4{#/blank#}were waiting, she walked over and offered me some popcorn. I thanked her,{#blank#}5{#/blank#}I didn't want to help myself to it. She repeatedly {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(insist) that I take some from the paper bag.

    I was so moved by that woman's{#blank#}7{#/blank#}(kind) that day. I clearly had more than she did, but she naturally and joyfully shared {#blank#}8{#/blank#}she had with me.

    I think about how poor people are sometimes able to share the little they have more easily

    {#blank#}9{#/blank#}those who own a lot. I wonder if it's true that the more you have,{#blank#}10{#/blank#} more difficult it is for you to share anything with others.

    Many teachers believe that hands－on experience is the {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(good) way to learn. A group of students in the United States are putting that belief to the test. They {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (success) designed and built a robot for discovering unexplored mines {#blank#}3{#/blank#} the bottom of the sea. Students made the robot {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(answer) a challenge from the U．S. Department of Defense.

    The students recently tested the underwater vehicle {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(call) PerseusⅡin a 95－meter－long tank of water at the Stevens Institute of Technology.

    The robot costs about $15,000 to build. The students use a video game control to direct {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(it) movements in the tank. What's more, devices known as Japters {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (able) the robot to go up, down and toward its target in the water. Video cameras on the robot send images back to a computer through a 13－meter－long cable. Perseus Ⅱ,{#blank#}8{#/blank#}the students worked up to 20 hours a week to design and build, also has {#blank#}9{#/blank#} set of lasers (激光), which are used to measure the size of an object.

    DeLorme supervised the project from {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(begin) to end. He says the specialized requirements of robots were demanding.

    Spending more than an hour on your smart phone each day may be a sign that you are suffering from depression,{#blank#}1{#/blank#}new study has suggested. The more time is spent {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (use) a phone for any reason including texting and going online, the more likely volunteers were{#blank#}3{#/blank#}have the blues.

    Monitoring people's comings and{#blank#}4{#/blank#}(go) using GPS tracking on their phones also helped track mood.     Beijing was once a city of bikes, known as the Bicycle Kingdom{#blank#}1{#/blank#} cars were reserved for official business and the politically powerful. However, decades of economic{#blank#}2{#/blank#} (grow) led to a huge flowing of cars in the city. Owning one became not just a marker of reaching the middle class but also a requirement for marriage. As the economy developed, autos pushed bikes off the roads{#blank#}3{#/blank#} (create) heavy pollution and miserable traffic.

    Analyses in China say it is three factors that contribute to bikes {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(increase) rapidly: a lot of cash looking for a home, a good idea and government support. “As the city s population grew, traffic jams got {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (bad).” Cai, the Ofo spokeswoman, said, “Shared bikes could solve the 'last mile' problem in {#blank#}10{#/blank#} environmentally friendly way.”

    After four years of living here, I have a better {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(understand) of northern China's food.  

    Northern China's hearty food is {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(general) more acceptable to Westerners. They can enjoy Beijing roast duck, beef and dairy from Inner Mongolia, and Korean dishes in the northeast. Northern China experiences cold and dry winters, and hot summers, {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(make) calories and salt replacement more important. As a result, northern dishes have strong flavors, compared with the south {#blank#}4{#/blank#} dishes are lighter in flavor.  

    Wheat is the main crop of northern China, and you will find a variety of wheat-flour {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(product). Rice is also eaten in the north, but it is certainly secondary to wheat. Dumplings are very popular in the north, {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(serve) with vinegar for dipping.  

    Northerners tend to eat more meat and dairy for the purpose {#blank#}7{#/blank#} fighting against the cold weather. Most meat dishes {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(base) on mutton, pork, beef,  chicken,  and fish.  

    {#blank#}9{#/blank#} are less fresh vegetables available because of the cold weather. Fruit is traditionally limited to a few hard seasonal varieties like apples, so it doesn't feature much in the cuisine, although the northwest is famous for {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(it) dried fruit and wine.  

    With so much information available in books and online, it's easy {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (learn) a few new facts each day. But how much of that do you {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (actual) remember? {#blank#}3{#/blank#}your answer is not much, here is the good news. Scientists at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, recently designed a new typeface (字体) {#blank#}4{#/blank#} was invented with read-it-and-forget-it people {#blank#}5{#/blank#} mind. Very appropriately, it's called Sans Forgetica.

    The idea behind Sans Forgetica is simple. The typeface is a tiny bit {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (difficulty) to read, which {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (mean) your brain has to work twice as hard to understand what it says. Because of that deeper focus, you'll have a better memory for whatever you're reading. That's not just a theory, either. The typeface was created by a team of {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (researcher) from RMIT University's School of Design and its Behavioural Business Lab. The group worked with a famous typographer Stephen Banham to test and improve {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (they) product.

    The typeface uses principles of cognitive psychology to create an effect {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (know) as desirable difficulty, the researchers note, which causes the brain to take part in deeper cognitive processing. The result is improved memory.
