Mr. Black went to the country on business. Bad luck! The rain (A)lasted from Tuesday to Sunday and all the traffic stopped. His bags were heavy and he could not carry them to a town. He had to stay in an inn(小旅馆) alone. There were several houses in the small village but he could not talk with anybody when night fell. He could not see any televisions and there was no cinema, either. (B)He had to go to bed early after supper. But he often woke up early in the morning. He would not get up, but lay in bed, listening to the rain falling.

      Seeing the wise fish had left, Jimmy thought, "My guide has gone and now I've lost my chance to escape." He felt sorry for it and then thought, "What can I do to save myself from these men and their nets? Perhaps I should pretend（假装）to be already dead, giving myself totally to the water." So he did that. He went up and down with the water, helpless, within arm's reach of the fishermen.

      "Look at this! The best and biggest fish is dead." One of the men lifted him by the tail, and threw him up on the ground. He rolled（滚动）over and over and moved secretly toward the water, and then, back in.

      The third fish was aimlessly jumping about, trying to escape with his speed and cleverness. The net, of course, finally closed around him, and as he lay in the hot frying-pan bed, he thought, "If I get out of this, I'll never live again in the limits of the lake. Next time, the ocean! I'll make it my home."

    A few years ago, my young sons, Sam, Jerry and Alex, joined a bike competition in a town far from our home. As their father was busy, I drove them to the competition.

    We were quite new to the town and didn't know anyone there. But soon after arriving, one woman gave me a chair. In the afternoon, we talked happily. Her name was Bev and she was there with her sons Jim and Carl.

    Unluckily, in one of the last races, my youngest son, Alex, had an accident (事故). He cried and cried, so I ran to meet him. He badly broke his arm.

    Sunday after Sunday, Betty came to class, tying her lessons to their everyday lives. She told the kids how they could make a difference right now. The students grew to love her.

    Betty taught that Sunday school class for thirty years. At last, her hair grew into a natural gray.

    Every now and then, she received a letter from a former student. There was a doctor, a research scientist, a homemaker, a businessman, and many teachers among them. One day she pulled out a blue envelope from her mailbox. And there was a photo in it. Squinting her eyes, she smiled at the man in the photo, still seeing the boy in him. Standing in the rubble(瓦砾), in the city of Delhi, India, he came to help the homeless people in the earthquake. Some words were written in the upper part of the photo, "Because of you, I am here now."

    My mother is a teacher, and I grew up with the challenges (挑战) a teacher faces. I often asked her, “Why do you teach?  What keeps you teaching? ”The answer was always the same. “There is always that one child, that one moment that is worth it. ”

    Now, I am a teacher, too. But different from my mother, I teach students challenging activities outdoors. And when my mother asked me the similar questions, my answer was, “It's that one child, that one special moment.”

    One of those moments happened recently. I was working with a group of girls in a four-week programme. Everything went on well through the “Team” events and we were moving on to a “High” one called the Wire(钢索) Walk.

    In the Wire Walk, each girl had to climb up the pegs(木桩) in a tree to a wire, 8 meters high, and then walk across it. Of course, everything was safe for sure. When I asked who would try, a few girls raised their hands, and they finished the Wire Walk with little difficulty.

    But when it was Susie's turn, it seemed that she didn't really want to. I asked Susie if she was ready. She answered softy, “I suppose.”

    Now, Susie was at the foot of the tree. She started to make the long reach for the first peg. The other girls cheered for her. Then I found Susie was becoming nervous with every step. I realised she would not go much further.

    Susie was halfway up. Then she stopped and held the tree tight(紧紧地),  looking very afraid. Her eyes were closed. With her face against the tree, she cried, “I can't.”

    The other girls sat in silence. I talked quietly to Susie, trying to relax her. I talked for a long time till I ran out of words.

    “I will still be your friend no matter what, Susie!” Mary broke the silence.

    To my surprise, Susie lifted her head and looked up to the wire. Then she turned to look down at Mary and smiled. Mary smiled back.

    Finally, Susie made it all the way across that wire. When she returned to the ground, the first hug she looked for was from Mary.

    We all cheered.

    Moments like this keep me doing what I do. The young hearts continue to fill me with courage.
