Every day, people may touch thousands of chemicals(化学药品).These chemicals are said to be harmless to humanhealth. In fact, the chemicals are considered so safe that we may wash with them.We put them on our bodies and even our faces. Other chemical products are used aroundour homes. Each chemical seems harmless on its own. But when connected with otherchemicals, they may become deadly. That is the finding of a two-year studyby a high-profile (高调的) task force of scientists. The taskforce was told to find the cancer-causing(致癌)possibilityof chemical mixtures.

Linda Gulliver was one of the 174 scientists on the task force. Theirjob was to study the cancer-causing possibility of 85 chemicals. All 85 are saidto be common in the environment.

Ms. Gulliver explains that chemicals have the possibility or abilityto form dangerous mixtures. Even simple minerals(矿物) can become dangerous when mixed with chemicals found in plastics orbeauty products.

She says the latest way to find whether(是否) chemicals cause cancer is to test them one ata time. This method leads to a long list of "safe" chemicals. She alsosays, "We need some researches to find out what mixtures of chemicals wouldbe more harmful than others; what groups of chemicals, when together, would producemore harmful effects(影响). But at the moment, that is notknown."

(3)、What does the underlined word "they" refer to?
A、One simple chemical. B、Other chemicals. C、Mixtures of chemicals. D、All chemicals
(4)、What is the best title for the text?
A、Mixtures of Safe Chemicals May Cause Cancer B、Being Exposed to One Chemical Is Dangerous C、How Do Mixtures of Safe Chemicals Develop? D、What Is the Real Reason for Cancer?

Have you seen any scarecrows (稻草人)? In the countryside of our country, some villagers like to set up some scarecrows in the fields in order to prevent birds from harming their crops. They think that this can play a role in driving away birds. In fact, not only farmers love to use scarecrows, but also some airports have installed scarecrows in such a developed technology today, which plays a very good role in driving away birds. Some people will say that birds are not fools, and they will come back to eat after a long time. So do the birds really feel scared? Can scarecrows really play a role in driving away birds? Not very — unless you're willing to put some extra(额外)effort into them.

While traditional scarecrows who couldn't move do work against "pest birds" (eg. crows and blackbirds), the effect is almost always temporary (暂时的). Over time, the birds get used to scarecrows who couldn't move and reuse their destructive (破坏性的)habits.

However, a few tricks can up your scarecrow's game. Researchers have learned that those with realistic facial features(特征)and brightly colored clothes are better at driving away birds. Also, moving a scarecrow around every few days often helps. According to several studies, flailing(大幅波动) scarecrows get the very best results.

Clothes makers also use eco—friendly materials in clothing.Most of them come from old clothes,newspapers or even plastic bottles. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}Many clothes makers like Li— Ning make clothes from this low—carbon material.

 根据短文内容,选择最佳答案。

Anne and Joseph are talking about an interesting question. Why do some people change their names? There can be many reasons. Hanna changed her name to Anne because she thought it would be easier for people to remember. On the other hand , Joseph is thinking about changing his name to an unusual name because he wants to be different.

People have a lot of reasons for changing their names. Film stars, singers, sportsmen and some famous people often  change their names because they want names that are not ordinary, or that have special sound. They chose the "new names " for themselves instead of the names their parents gave them when they were born.

Some people have another reason for changing their names. They have moved to a new country and want to use a name that is usual there. For example, Li Kaiming changed his name to Ken Lee when he moved to the United States. He uses the name Ken athis job and at school. But with his family and Chinese friends, he uses Li Kaiming. For some people, using different names makes life easier in their new country.

In many countries , a woman changes her family name to her husband's after she got married. But today, many women are keeping their own family name and not using their husband's. Sometimes, women use their own names in some situations and their husbands' in other situations. And some use both their own names and their husbands'.

 阅读下面语言材料,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项

Should children do housework? Different people have different ideas. Some parents will say that their children are too busy for housework. Other parents will ask their children to do housework,but the housework doesn't get done. That's a problem.

Doing housework is good for children. Doing housework helps them develop an awareness of the needs of others. One small study,done over a period of 25 years,found that young adults will succeed in their mid﹣20s depend on whether they took part in housework tasks at the age of 3 or 4. Those who early shouldered responsibilities developed a sense of responsibility in other areas of their lives.

But few kids are doing much around the house at all. In a survey of 1,000 American parents,75 percent said they believed doing housework made kids" more responsible". Yet only 36 percent of those said they required their children to do housework.

Sports and homework are not the housework﹣free reasons. The goal,after all,is to raise a kind of adults who can balance a caring role in their families and communities. Housework teaches that balance.

What should you do when getting children to do housework? Never accept their excuses. Don't worry if you must repeat yourself again and again. If you're spending more time getting the child to do housework than it would take to do it yourself,then you're doing it right. Can a payment help?I don't think so. If you're trying to teach kids to shoulder the responsibility of a home,paying them for housework is not the right choice.
