Who do you think came up with the idea for the Paralympics (残奥会)？The man who organized the sporting events which became the Paralympic Games1was a doctor，Ludwig Guttmann.

      In  his  teens，Ludwig  Guttmann  was  interested  in medicine and worked as a2in a hospital.Then he3from medical school and became a doctor when he was 25 years old.

        Ludwig Guttmann4a successful career for the next  few years.5 ， because Ludwig Guttmann and his family  were Jews，life in Germany was becoming very6for them. In 1938 Ludwig Guttmann7to the UK with his  family where he continued his research8the best way to  treat patients.

      The Second World War was going on and there were a lot of soldiers9in the fighting.Often they10the use of their legs and needed11and help.The disabled soldiers were often12and angry for they couldn't really live a normal life.Ludwig Guttmann used his new13to look after their injuries and he also tried to give them emotional strength.

       Ludwig Guttmann14taking part in sports could help a person's body as well as his mind and began to use15 as a treatment to help his patients.He wanted to give them back their self­respect and dignity and16them to take part in sports.

       In 1948 the hospital held a sporting event called “The International Wheelchair Games”．By 1952 the event began to17bigger with disabled athletes from other countries attending.By 1960 the games were called the International Stoke Mandeville  Games  and they  were  held  in  Rome alongside the18Summer Olympics.By 1968 there were 750 athletes from 29 different countries.Ludwig Guttmann himself died in 1980，even19the games were called “Paralympics”，but there is no20that he is the founder and father of the Paralympic Games.It's thanks to his hard work that we are all able to enjoy the Paralympics.

    People say one man's trash(垃圾) is another man's treasure. That1 comes to me as I2 the house purchased in 1962 by my parents. My mother passed away in 1996. My father left the house3 my sister and me when he died a few months ago.

    After Dad was4 , we looked around the5 house where we grew up and that Dad loved so much. At first we felt so6 all the stuff left. Like so many of their generation, my parents7 everything. And like many in my generation, we faced anxious 8 about what to abandon and what to keep.

    As we started throwing out old phone books and every medical bill from every9 my parents ever saw, I also10 many hidden treasures. Mom's pocketbook was in their bedroom closet, which had everything in it, 11 her hairbrush with hair, as if she were still here. And Dad, who was a World War II veteran(退伍兵) and a world traveler,12 everything—from little spoons from all over the world to every letter he wrote to his parents while in the13. The letters he wrote during the war14 his thoughts as a young man. Later, in the basement, I15 our old kitchen table, which brought back 16 of my parents and sister and me having breakfast together .

    I'm realizing all these things17 my parents' life journey. Each time I go to18, I find something that reminded me of my childhood or teaches me something about my parents I19 knew. 20, from the shabby furniture to all the hidden treasures, means more to me than all the money in the world.

    My father often works very hard. And he has1to see a movies. Here I'll tell you2about him.

    One afternoon, when he finished his work and3go home, he found a film ticket under the4on his desk. He thought he5to have not much work to do that day and6was quite wonderful to pass the7at the cinema. So he came back home and8finished his supper. Then he said9to us and left.But to our10, he came back about half an hour later, I11him what was the matter. He smiled and told us about12funny thing that had happened at the cinema.When my father was sitting in his seat, a 13came to my father's and said that the seat was14. My father was surprised. He took out the ticket15looked at it carefully. It was Row17,16. And then he looked at the seat. It was the same. So he asked her17her ticket. She took out the ticket at once and the seat shown in it was Row 17, Seat 3. 

    18? What's the matter with all this? While they were wondering(想知道), suddenly the woman said, “The19of the tickets are different.” So they looked at the ticket more carefully. After a while, my father said, “Oh,20, I made a mistake. My ticket is for the film a month ago. Take this seat, please.” With these words, he left the cinema.

    Growing roots

    When I was growing up, I had an old neighbor named Dr. Gibbs. He didn't look like any doctor I'd 1 known. When Dr. Gibbs wasn't 2 lives, he was planting trees.

The good doctor had some3 theories on planting trees. He believed in "No pains, no gains". He never 4 his new trees, which was5 many people. Once I asked why. He 6 that watering plants spoiled them, and that if you water them, each following tree generation will 7 weaker and weaker. So you have to make things8 for them. He talked about how watering trees

    9 shallow roots, and how trees that weren't watered had to grow deep roots in

    10 of water. I came to understand that he meant deep roots were to be 11 I planted a couple of trees a few years back and I took good care of them. Two years of12 has resulted in trees that expect to be waited on hand and foot. Whenever a cold wind blows, they 13and tremble their branches. Funny things about those trees of Dr. Gibbs'. The lack of water seemed to 14them in ways comfort and ease never could.

    I used to15for my sons that their lives will be easy. But16 I've been thinking that it's time to17 my prayer. I know my children are going to meet

    18 and I'm praying they will be strong. The prayer for comfort is seldom met. What we need to do is to pray for deep roots,19when the winds blow, we won't be20away.

    From an early age, Parker always said that he would be an astronaut when he grew up. But no matter how much he studied and took tests, he was never 1 to fly in space. 2 , he grew over the maximum age for taking the selection tests. In other words, he would never be able to fulfill his 3 .

    Thinking about all the time and 4 Parker had put into trying to be an astronaut, people felt 5 for him. Despite what he was told about having to 6 his ambition, Parker continued training and studying, 7  he was going to have the tests next month.

    He 8  as he got older, and when he was a very old man he heard that they were doing some very important 9 experiments. For those experiments they needed a very 10 astronaut. Parker, who now walked with a 11 was the only old man in the whole world who was 12 to fly in a rocket. Therefore, Parker found himself flying in 13 , all with the help of science. It was clear that the 14 gained during those missions helped to cure one of the worst sicknesses for old people, and Parker was 15 as a hero.

    One cold December morning, my dad and I were walking along the road to a store to buy Christmas presents. Suddenly a car ran to us out of 1. Pushed away by my dad, I was 2 while he was unable to escape and injured. My dad 3 unconditional love to me when faced with the accident. Since that day, I have 4 the power of love and the 5it can teach to those who take anything for granted, as I did everything before.

    People wander into our lives for various reasons, but each one has something to 6, even the driver who caused the 7. He helped me a lot. Whether our 8is entirely good or not, there remains something to be gained from every person we 9. I have come to view 10 in this way. Sometimes, when schoolwork gets tough and I lack 11, I remind myself that I am here to make use of every lesson that I have been given. What a 12 it is to be able to acquire knowledge!

    This unconditional love I have for 13allows me to see the world through what some may call rose-colored glasses, which helps me to love and be loved in complete confidence as well. 14, it offers me the power to see things clearly in the15 changing world and 16myself to overcome difficulties in my life. I am 17 to learn, and because of my ability to love, I 18 the challenges that will help me grow. I approach everything with interests, and 19 an opportunity for education on every page of my books, and even with difficulties and 20.
