How to Make Friends

Indeed, there are many things in life which we alone cannot perform.

We need friends' help. Friends are people who willingly and readily help us when we are in trouble, and show sympathy for us when we are in misery

For example, when we have passed the graduation examination and are looking for a job, we need experienced and reliable friends to guide us and help us on our way. A good friend is also an adviser, because our own points of view towards things may not be always right.

Of course, we can make friends everywhere. However, I think the best place is school, where we are among a big number of boys and girls our own age, so it is easy to get to know one another in a short time.

In order to make friends, we ourselves must be honest, noble-minded and kind-hearted whereby to leave a favorable impression on others since other people observe us the same way as we do.

At the same time, we should avoid bad friends, because they always do harm to us and moreover, they are dangerous to the people around. Worse still, they destroy our friendship with good friends.

A. Indeed, seeking acquaintance with bad friends would be a serious mistake

B. A faithful friend is hard to find.

C. Therefore, it is necessary for us to seek advice from friends.

D. A friend in need is a friend indeed.

E. Besides, we can also make friends among the people who work with us in the community.

F. A proverb says “One man is not good enough to live alone in the world.”

G. The benefits of friendship are boundless and sometimes invisible.

A layover (临时滞留) or flight delay can be extremely fun in these international airports.

Munich Airport, Germany

Aviation (航空) lovers passing through Munich can take a behind-the-scenes tour to learn how the airport operates. Visitors can also tour three historic aircraft and a retired rescue helicopter, climb up to a 28-metre high observation platform for an up-close view of take-offs and landings, and watch films on aviation in the airport's 60-seat cinema. Travelers can also kill layover time at an 18-hole mini-golf course, or even stop in for a teeth cleaning at the airport dental office.

Changi Airport, Singapore

After a long flight to Singapore, travelers can relax in a Balinese-style swimming pool, work out at the airport gym, or enjoy a drink and live musical performances at the airport's Music Bar. The airport also boasts a tranquil butterfly garden, and a “fragrant garden” which is home to 15 species of plants and trees. Free movies at one of two airport cinemas also keep passengers entertained.

    Schiphol Amsterdam Airport, the Netherlands

Schiphol is Europe's fifth-largest airport. Here passengers can view the works of Dutch masters free of charge, and try their luck at airport's casino (赌场). You can even have your wedding ceremony at Schiphol—couples can choose from four different wedding packages, including a 1930-style ceremony held on a Dakota military aircraft.

    San Francisco International Airport, California

The airport's 24-hour AirTrain not only moves passengers between terminal, but also provides a fun view of the runways. There are three aquariums (水族馆) to explore, along with interactive play areas, an aviation museum, and a library. If that's not enough to keep the little ones busy, travelers can rent portable DVD players and movies for use in the airport.

With time going on, dogs have developed a special relationship with people. Recently, however, some dogs have taken a different role in people's lives — therapy dogs.

{#blank#}1{#/blank#} Some therapy dogs visit patients in hospitals or nursing homes, while others visit children in schools and libraries. They are there to help children become better readers.

Reading programs that use therapy dogs have been in existence for more than ten years. All therapy dogs of this program are registered with an organization that tests the dogs to make sure they have the right personality for the job.

{#blank#}2{#/blank#} Both the dogs and the handlers are volunteers with the reading program.

At the start of a reading therapy session, a child and a dog are introduced. The pair is allowed to settle down in a quiet corner together. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} An adult handler stays nearby but generally lets the dog perform its job without being interrupted. Sometimes, a handler may ask a question that encourages the child to work with the dog to help the child feel more comfortable.

    Not every child will be able to be part of a reading therapy program that uses dogs. A few children might be allergic to dogs or afraid of them; some children might have cultural traditions that prevent them from touching a dog. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}

Reading therapy programs inspire learning and change for human beings. The readers benefit a lot, gaining confidence and learning that reading aloud can be a relaxing experience.

{#blank#}5{#/blank#} They spend time with human friends. For dogs that love human companionship and a quiet place to rest, being part of a reading therapy program can be a great way to spend a few hours being with humans each day.

A. As the child reads, the dog usually lies quietly and listens.

B. A dog's handler also takes a class and must pass a test to work in the therapy program.

C. When reading to an animal, some children may become relaxed.

D. A therapy dog is more of a companion and is trained to help people in different ways.

Rising through stages to realize ourselves

Many modern people have the problem that they don't know who they are and what their purpose is. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Once high school seniors graduate, they seem to lose their identity. They once studied hard. But after they stop working, they begin to lose their way.

In the theory of the Hierarchy of Needs(需求理论), Abraham Maslo, put forward a similar situation, which consists of the five levels of a person's need. The fifth and final level is self-realization, which is where our final achievement lies. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}.

I think self- realization has three major aspects. The first stage is acceptance, the second stage is discovery and the last stage is perseverance.

Acceptance is the first stage. We should be reminded that we are all born unique, so we all have our own strengths and weaknesses. Only when we understand these, can we pursue them or change them. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}.

Once we've accepted ourselves, we can discover what we are interested in and what we want to be. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} but indeed we should live for ourselves. So before we start working towards a purpose, we should ask ourselves "Is this what we truly desire?" and "Is this going to change the situation we're in?"

The last stage is perseverance.{#blank#}5{#/blank#}. Those who can self-realize are people who focus on the things they want to change.

Through the three stages, we could gain recognition of ourselves. And by this point, whatever our lives were like, we would be able to stand tall, confident of ourselves.

A. It's nothing to a man of perseverance

B. Only by acceptance of the past can we change it

C. This is especially common among college students

D. Many people tend to go along with social expectations

E. Being objective and yet tolerant is the key to acceptance

F. It is the process of knowing ourselves and finding a purpose

G. Exploring our potential isn't going to be done in a short time

We love the sea. We swim into it, live near it, build beside it, and even imagine about living under the sea. But we're terrified of it, too. For much of our history, we have turned to "hard engineering" to control the marine (海洋) environment and manage its influence on us. We build dams, sea walls and channels. But all these efforts seem to fail. The sea has a habit of taking back its own. And we suffer.

Johnston, a marine ecologist, is advocating for "blue engineering" — the marine version of the "green engineering" movement on land that has seen nations like Singapore building the walls and roofs of the concrete jungle with plant life.

We are expanding further into the marine environment. This practice does harm lo marine ecosystems. We're loving the sea to death, but we've not been thinking about design of structures (建筑物) with respect to ecology. Some coastal structures create shade, which reduces the growth of seaweed. Bright lights at night contuse species such as turtles. That's why blue engineering comes in.

Throughout the world people are starting to turn things around. Researchers with the World Harbour Project are creating tiles (瓦片) similar to the natural structures found on rocky shores with 3D printing technology. These make more attractive homes for marine creatures. Researchers are also actively seeding these tiles with local seaweeds and creatures such as the Sydney rock oyster, which is particularly good at improving water quality. Twelve harbours around the world are taking part in this marine tile experiment, each working with their own unique marine life.

It's a far cry from, he days when huge number, of old tyres were thrown, into the sea to build "artificial reef" (礁石). Those clumsy early attempts are now costing millions to remove, showing just how far we have yet to go in understanding how best to co-habit with the underwater world.
