Facebook has developed a kind of Al (人工智能), translating between any pair of 100 languages without depending on first translating to English.

Facebook 's system was trained on a data (数据)set of 7. 5 billion sentence pairs collected from the web across 100 languages though not all the languages had an equal number of sentence pairs. "What I was really interested in was cutting out English as a middle man. Globally there are plenty of countries where they speak two languages that aren't English," says Angela Fan of Facebook Al who led the work.

For some language pairs, the new system shows obvious improvements in translation quality. For example, translating from Spanish to Portuguese is extremely strong because Spanish is the second-most spoken first language worldwide, meaning the researchers can get a lot of data. Translation between English and Belarusian also is improved because the Al can translate Russian into English, which shares similarities with Belarusian.

While the system isn't in use on the social network site. Facebook plans to put it to work soon to manage the 20 billion translations made every day when people click "Translate" on posts (帖子))written in more than 160 languages. "Future work will be done on other language," says Fan "especially for languages where we don't have a lot of data, like South-East Asian and African languages."

The work "breaks away from the English-centric models and tries to build more different models", says Sheila Castilho of the ADAPT Centre at Dublin City University. Ireland. "Thai's pretty new and different. But it's hard to know if the Al does a right translation work," says Castilho. "The users may not know the other language, so they cannot judge the correctness of the translation."

(1)、What's Angela Fan's purpose of making the research?
A、To collect data of all kinds of people. B、To avoid using English as a middle man in translation. C、To achieve her dream of becoming a translator. D、To make learning different languages easier.
(2)、Why is it easy to translate from Spanish to Portuguese by Al?
A、Portuguese is similar to Spanish. B、Spanish is spoken by the largest number of people. C、Researchers have a good knowledge of the two languages. D、There is much data on Spanish.
(3)、What is Castilho worried about?
A、The safety of Al translation. B、The way of using Facebook. C、The correctness of Al translation. D、The number of posts on the website.
(4)、What is the text mainly about?
A、Facebook Al can translate any pair of 100 languages. B、Facebook wants to buy a new system. C、Facebook Al can talk with the users. D、Face book has lost many users.

When asked about happiness, we usually think of something extraordinary, an absolute delight, which seems to get rarer the older we get.

For kids, happiness has a magical quality. Their delight at winning a race or getting a new bike is unreserved (毫无掩饰的).

In the teenage years the concept of happiness changes. Suddenly it's conditional on such things as excitement, love and popularity. I can still recall the excitement of being invited to dance with the most attractive boy at the school party.

In adulthood the things that bring deep joy—love, marriage, birth—also bring responsibility and the risk of loss. For adults, happiness is complicated (复杂的).

My definition of happiness is “the capacity for enjoyment”. The more we can enjoy what we have, the happier we are. It's easy to overlook the pleasure we get from the company of friends, the freedom to live where we please, and even good health.

I experienced my little moments of pleasure yesterday. First I was overjoyed when I shut the last lunch-box and had the house to myself. Then I spent an uninterrupted morning writing, which I love. When the kids and my husband come home, I enjoyed their noise after the quiet of the day.

Psychologists tell us that to be happy we need a mix of enjoyable leisure time and satisfying work. I don't think that my grandmother, who raised 14 children, had much of either. She did have a network of close friends and family, and maybe this what satisfied her.

We, however, with so many choices and such pressure to succeed in every area, have turned happiness into one more thing we've got to have. We're so self-conscious about our “right” to it that it's making us miserable. So we chase it and equal it with wealth and success, without noticing that the people who have those things aren't necessarily happier.

Happiness isn't about what happens to—it's about how we see what happens to us. It's the skillful way of finding a positive for every negative. It's not wishing for what we don't have , but enjoying what we do possess.

Scientists are studying different foods, and they will see which foods protect us from cancer(癌症), and which cause it. It is known that a healthy diet(饮食) will help keep a healthy body weight, which can also decrease the risk(风险) of many types of cancer.

    Fruit and vegetables

Fruit and vegetables are an important part of a healthy diet. They can decrease the risk of some cancer types like mouth and throat cancer. They are a good source of many important nutrients such as vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, and are an excellent source of fiber.

    Our advice

Try to get plenty of fruit and vegetables in your diet. Eating fruit and vegetables with a variety of colors will help you get many kinds of vitamins and minerals, as the chemicals that give these foods their colors are good for you.

    Meat

Eating lots of red and processed meat can increase(增加) your risk of stomach cancer. Red meat includes all fresh and frozen beef, pork and lamb. Processed meat includes ham, bacon and sausage. White meat, such as chicken, is unlikely to increase your risk of cancer.

    Our advice

Eat smaller and fewer parts of red and processed meat. Try using beans or peas instead of meat in your diet. When you cook meat, use low-temperature methods.

    Fat

Fat is a necessary part of our diet but high-fat diet can increase our risk of cancer, heart disease and other diseases. Meat is higher in saturated fat(饱和脂肪) and eating too much saturated fat may increase your risk of breast cancer.

    Our advice

Try not to eat too much fatty foods. In particular, try to cut down on saturated fat contained in fatty meat, biscuits, and butter. Try to avoid frying foods in lots of oil.

Everybody hates rats (big mice). But in the earthquake capitals of the world — Japan, Los Angeles, Turkey — rats will soon be man's best friends.

What happens after an earthquake? We send in rescue dogs. Why? Because they can smell people. Dogs save lives. They help rescuers to find living people. But dogs are big and they can't get into small spaces. So now a new research project is using a smaller animal to save lives: the rat.

How does it work? First, the rat is trained to smell people. When this happens, the rat's brain gives a signal (信号). This is sent to a small radio on its back, and then the rescuers follow the radio signals. When the rat's brain activity jumps, the rescuers know that someone is alive. The rat has smelled that person.

Although there are already robots which can do this job, rats are better. Christian Linster at Cornell University, New York, says, "Robots' noses don't work well when there are other smells around. Rats are good at that." Rats can also see in the dark. They are cheaper and quicker to train than dogs, and unlike robots, they don't need electricity!

The "rat project" is not finished, but Julie Ryan of International Rescue Organization in Scotland says, "It would be wonderful. A rat could get into spaces we couldn't get to, and a rat would get out if it wasn't safe." Perhaps for the first time in history, people will be happy to see a rat in a building (but only after an earthquake, of course).
