Tu Yoyo was honored with the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine  {#blank#}1{#/blank#}Oct. 5. She was the first Chinese citizen {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(win) a Nobel Prize in science. Tu {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(share) the prize with the Irish-born William Campbell and Satoshi Omura of Japan.

    Tu is a researcher at the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine now. She  {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(give) the prize for  {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (develop) artemisinin (青蒿素) , a new drug therapy against malaria( 疟疾)， {#blank#}6{#/blank#} has saved millions of lives worldwide, especially in developing countries.

    Tu and her colleagues joined a government project to find a new malaria drug in the late 1960s. They made 380 herbal extracts from two thousand recipes from traditional Chinese medical books. In 1971, after nearly two hundred  {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (fail), Tu's team  {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(final) found an extract that was 100% effective against the malaria parasites-atremisinin. In 2001, the World Health Organization made artemisinin {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (it) first choice in the treatment of malaria.

    “The discovery of artemisinin is a gift to mankind from traditional Chinese medicine. It's the achievement of the research team. Winning the prize is  {#blank#}10{#/blank#} honor for Chinese science and traditional Chinese medicine,” Tu said.

    Every year, the ancient Town of Fenghuang,{#blank#}1{#/blank#}of China's most well-known ancient towns, is visited by a large number of people from all over the world.{#blank#}2{#/blank#} (fortunate), it was under water as heavy rain hit the centre of the country,{#blank#}3{#/blank#}tens of thousands of people leaving from the area. Heavy rain and floods lasted for the past few days. Waters in the nearby river called the Tuojiang River rose by almost one meter above warning level,{#blank#}4{#/blank#} (cause) heavy rainstorms. More than 120,000 local people and tourists have been helped to leave there because of the terrible disaster. And more than 4,000 shops in the town{#blank#}5{#/blank#}(shut). Several bridges on the Tuojiang River have been damaged or destroyed. Water has flowed into many bars, restaurants and hotels in its ancient town, and electricity in the ancient town has been cut off.{#blank#}6{#/blank#}the heavy rains have stopped, the popular tourist spot remains closed for local people's {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(safe).

    {#blank#}8{#/blank#} shoe shop owner named Kuang said the flood was the{#blank#}9{#/blank#}(bad) the town had experienced. They could only live in an old factory{#blank#}10{#/blank#}many homeless people had to stay together.

    Before the 17^th century, most of the native English speakers lived in England. After the 17^th century, British people began to move to other {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (country). Gradually, English was spoken there. At present {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (many) people speak English as their first, second or a foreign language than ever before. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (luck), native English speakers can understand each other even if they don't speak the same kind of English.

English now is also spoken as a foreign {#blank#}9{#/blank#}second language in South Asia. China may have the {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (large) number of English learners.

    Why is pink or purple a color for girls and blue or brown for boys?

The answer depends largely {#blank#}1{#/blank#}cultural values as well as personal experiences. To the Egyptians, green was a color {#blank#}2{#/blank#} represented the hope and joy of spring, while for Muslims, it means heaven. Red is a symbol of good luck in many cultures. During the Spring Festival in China, children {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (give) money in a red envelope to bring good fortune in the New Year. For many nations, blue is a symbol of protection and religious beliefs. Greek people often wear a blue necklace hoping to protect{#blank#}4{#/blank#}against evils（灾祸）.

People's {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (choose) of colors is also influenced by their bodies' reactions toward them. Green is said to be {#blank#}6{#/blank#} most restful color. It has the ability to reduce pain and relax people both mentally{#blank#}7{#/blank#}physically. People {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(work) in green environment have been found to have fewer stomach aches.

Red can cause a person's blood pressure to rise and increase people's appetites（食欲）. Many decorators will include different shades of red in the restaurant. And many commercial websites will have a red "Buy Now" button because red is a color that {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(easy) catches a person's eye.

Blue is another calming color. Unlike red, blue is believed to cause people to lose appetite. So {#blank#}10{#/blank#} you want to eat less, some suggest that eating from blue plates can help.

    In his book, Intentional Living, author John Maxwell shares that back in 1976, he received a gift from one of his{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(assist).As he unwrapped the gift, he saw that it was a book{#blank#}2{#/blank#}(name) The Greatest Story Ever Told. He couldn't wait{#blank#}3{#/blank#}(read) it.

    But when he opened the book, he was{#blank#}4{#/blank#}astonish) to see that the pages were blank. Inside the book was{#blank#}5{#/blank#}note that said, "John, your life is before you. Fill these pages with kind acts and good thoughts of your heart. Write a great story about your life." The intention of writing the story of his life{#blank#}6{#/blank#}(excite) him. Then, he began to write his book.

    Every day we live out our story through our words, actions and decisions. But we must remember to live with intention to focus{#blank#}7{#/blank#}what matters most in life and to regain that focus when we get changed. Without intention, we can become unfocused in things{#blank#}8{#/blank#}needn't add to a life of significance and difference in our world.

    Life isn't perfect and it's always hard, {#blank#}9{#/blank#}we need reminders in our life from a friend, author, blogger, pastor or our inner spirit to re-focus us on the things that matter and make us live{#blank#}10{#/blank#}(positive).

The Creator of Middle Earth

    John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, better known as J. R. R. Tolkien, was born in 1892 in South Africa. His parents had moved there looking for {#blank#}1{#/blank#} better job for his father. Three years {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(late), his mother took him on a trip to England to visit family. While they were away, they received terrible news that his father had died.

    {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(grow) up without a father must have been difficult for Tolkien. Worse still, when he was only twelve years old, his mother also passed away. As a child, he had a great passion for language and in 1908, he went to Oxford University {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(study) languages and literature. In 1915, he joined the army and fought in the battle against the Germans. But soon, he became too ill to fight and returned {#blank#}5{#/blank#} England the following year. He didn't have a {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(satisfy) childhood himself, so around in 1933, he spent much time telling his children fantasy {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(story) of a hobbit (霍比特人) called Bilbo. He first put it in writing in 1936, {#blank#}8{#/blank#} turned out to be a surprising hit. The publisher asked him to write another. He did so and in 1948 published The Lord of the Rings, which {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(publish) in three volumes between 1954 and 1955.

    Tolkien, {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(age) eighty­one, died in 1973.
