Last summer, as soon as school was over, I thought maybe I could spend the summer {#blank#}1{#/blank#}a way different from previous ones. But how? In 1990, over 100 countries signed {#blank#}1{#/blank#} international agreement to make it illegal to buy or sell ivory, which is mainly used for jewelry. Most ivory is made from the tusks(象牙) of African elephants. These tusks are {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(terrible) valuable—one pair is worth more than three times the income of an African farmer or a factory worker in a year.

    Hunting elephants was so profitable {#blank#}3{#/blank#}from 1979 to 1989 the number of elephants in Africa fell from 1.3 million to 600,000. It was feared that by the year 2020 there would be none {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(leave). However, thanks{#blank#}5{#/blank#} the international agreement, there {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(be) much less illegal hunting since 1990.

    But considering {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(vary) of aspects, it costs a lot of money to preserve elephants. Games wardens (看守人) must be hired to protect them. Land must be set aside for them, and when they destroy a farmer's crops, the farmer must {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(pay) compensation.(赔偿金)

    Zimbabwe and four other African countries say that some of the elephants should be killed legally. This would help keep the population stable, and selling the ivory would help pay for preserving the elephants. But conservationists say that {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(make) ivory legal to sell would lead to even more illegal hunting. Others say {#blank#}10{#/blank#}is wrong is to kill elephants because they are sensitive animals that feel emotional pain at the death of other elephants.

    Of the three major drinks of the world—tea, coffee and cocoa—tea is consumed by the {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(large) number of people.

    China is the homeland of tea. Human cultivation of tea plants dates back to two thousand years ago. The habit of tea drinking spread to Japan in the 6th century, but it was not introduced to Europe and America till the 17th and 18th centuries. Now the number of tea {#blank#}10{#/blank#}  （drink） in the world is still on the increase.

    The giant panda {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(love) by people throughout the world. Chinese scientists{#blank#}2{#/blank#} (recent) had a chance to study a wild female panda with a newborn baby. She was a very{#blank#}3{#/blank#} (care) mother. For 25 days, she never left her baby, not even to find something (eat)! S{#blank#}4{#/blank#}he would not let any other pandas come near. She licked the baby constantly to keep it clean. Any smell might attract natural{#blank#}5{#/blank#} (enemy) that would try to eat the little comforting pats. The mother held the baby in her front paws much the way a human does, it {#blank#}6{#/blank#}cried, she rocked it back and forth and gave it little comforting pats, The mother continued to care for the young panda {#blank#}7{#/blank#} more than two years. By that time, the panda no longer needed {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (it) mother for food. However, it stayed with her and leaned about the ways of the forest. Then, after two and a half years, the mother {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(drive) the young panda away. It was time for her to have a new baby, {#blank#}10{#/blank#} it was also time for the young panda to be independent.

    If this 13-year-old American boy succeeds in his effort {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (climb) Mount Everest, he has modest ambitions — pick a small piece of rock from the top of the world as a memento (纪念品) and wear it in a necklace.

    "I will not sell it or give it to anyone. It is something for {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (me) to say 'this is a rock from the summit'," Jordan Romero from California, told reporters in Kathmandu. He left {#blank#}3{#/blank#} the mountain on Sunday.

    If he {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (succeed), Romero will become {#blank#}5{#/blank#} youngest climber to scale the 8,850 meters Everest summit. {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (current) a 16-year-old Nepali boy, Temba Tsheri Sherpa, holds the record of being the world's youngest climber of Mount Everest.     Romero said Mount Qomolangma was part of his goal to climb the highest mountains on all seven {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (continent).

    "It is just a goal," he {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (say) confidently. "If I don't succeed I am okay. I will try again."

    Romero has already climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa and Mount McKinley in Alaska among others.

    "I know it requires a lot of {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (patient). I will remain patient. I want to stay safe and make right choice," Romero said.
