It is impossible to know when you might find yourself lost in a forest. If you know what to do, you can survive in a forest without much trouble; but if you are not prepared, survival can be much less likely.

Keep fear at bay

It is completely natural to be afraid when you are faced with a survival situation. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} The more your fear overcomes you, the lower your chances are of survival, as your mind is going to become clouded and panic may set in.

Stay warm

Obviously, the low body temperature is one of the primary dangers you face when you must survive in the forest{#blank#}2{#/blank#} Never stop to sleep or quit moving around unless you have appropriate shelter.

Know how to make a fire

Obviously , if you have a lighter or matches, this is not a problem. But if not, you can attempt to use a dry narrow pointed stick and a dry flat piece of wood. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} This requires a great deal of work, but if done correctly, you will succeed.

Make some shelter

{#blank#}4{#/blank#} The easiest way to provide protection is to find a fallen tree and cover it with other branches and brush so that you can stay in the natural pit underneath the tree trunk. This is a very important aspect of being able to survive in the forest.

Stay put unless you know exactly where you are

If you can build a stable shelter and start a fire, you can survive in the forest for several days. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} If you know where you are, travel as far as possible during the day while making sure you stop long enough before dark so that you can build another shelter.

A. Soon you will find that it's not that difficult to survive in the forest.

B. However, if you are going to survive in the forest, you must keep your thoughts clear.

C. Make as much friction(摩擦) as possible by rubbing the pointed stick along the flat piece.

D. It is better to stay and wait for rescue.

E. Under no circumstances should we fight with the wild animals.

F. Caves and overhangs are perfect, but most likely you must build your own.

G. It is crucial that you do all you can to stay dry and keep your body temperature up.

    People Are People

Globalization has brought different cultures together in a way unimaginable one hundred years ago. Today, Chinese, Indians, Arabs, Africans, Anglos, and Hispanics may all work in the same offices, attend the same schools or live in the same neighborhoods{#blank#}1{#/blank#} And our society has lately emphasized(强调)the importance of diversity.

{#blank#}2{#/blank#}Take the following old proverbs for example.

“Honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom.” Thomas Jefferson, American President

“One falsehood spoils a thousand truths.” African proverb

“Be honest to those who are honest, and be also to those who are not honest.” Lao Tzu, Chinese philosopher

“A sacrifice is written off by a lie and the merit of devotion by an act of cheat.” Hindu saying

{#blank#}3{#/blank#} These seems to be a sort of cultural unity.

We don't wish to imply all cultures are the same. Cultural diversity is real, and people from different cultures view many situations in different ways. However, historically, different cultures seem to share many common values. They are justice, courage, patience, generosity, equality, mercy and kindness, respect for the elders, and many more. Lying and stealing appear to be wrong no matter where you go. Perhaps some cultures make room for extenuating(情有可原)circumstances more than others; perhaps cultures apply these virtues in different ways; and when values disagree, different cultures may place different levels of importance on them{#blank#}4{#/blank#} But both cultures may still value both.

    To us, it seems as if there is some sort of code of right and wrong that everyone everywhere seems to understand, regardless of culture. It is almost as if, behind all of the diversity, one finds a common understanding – a human culture, if you will – that goes beyond racial, social, and political boundaries.{#blank#}5{#/blank#}

A. All people seem to agree that we should tell the truth.

B. As cultures meet with each other, many differences stand out.

C. Each value supports many more sayings from different cultures.

D. We want to show, however, that there is more to these cultures than diversity.

E. These sayings from four separate cultures all support the same value – honesty.

F. It is almost as if, despite all our differences, we are all still the same – we are just people.

G. In other words, one culture may lean more toward justice and another culture more toward mercy.

We all know someone who holds court wherever they find themselves with amusing stories. For the rest of us, conversation can be trickier. Our editor asked Catherine Blyth, the author of The Art of Conversation for her tips on how to shine — and not get cancelled — at your next small-talk.

Consider what you want from a conversation

{#blank#}1{#/blank#}. In fact, a conversation is usually a way to get something we want, whether that's to making a friend, or to asking someone on a date. Knowing what you want will keep things flowing. "At least, what you can get from a conversation is an interesting adventure with another mind. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}." says Blyth.

Guide the other person to help you

"There's nothing more flattering (受宠若惊) than feeling like that you've helped someone," Blyth says. She suggests finding a way to make the other person useful to you. "{#blank#}3{#/blank#}, that allows you to reveal a bit of yourself while inviting them to help, which is a great way to get conversation started."

Listen attentively and purposefully

Are you listening to understand, or listening to respond? That's a perfect question a would-be conversationalist should ask themselves. "A good listener indicates what interests them. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}. If I'm conversing with someone who makes it all about themselves, I'll gently point that I'm not interested and shift us towards other topics." says Blyth.

Keep your phone out of sight and out of mind

"If you're chatting with someone with your phone next to you, what you're saying is ‘you're only as important as my next notification'," says Blyth. "Whatever you do on a screen isn't a conversation. Problems arises from comparing real conversation to text messaging. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}. We need to give each other some grace."

A. Seeing the world through the eyes of others is a reward itself

B. People feel bad about conversation because they think it's a performance

C. Your responses should show which topics are interesting and which aren't

D. The best mindset you bring to small-talk is the idea that it's a treasure hunt

E. A direct praise is good, but if it's something like ‘I love that coat, where did you buy it?'

F. In a real conversation, you can't look things up, think about how to phrase your thoughts

G. You have to constantly be listening with your ears, your mind, and be conscious of doing so
