Five Ways to End Procrastination

Never put off till tomorrow what may be done today. Waiting until later is one of life's guilty secrets, but procrastination (拖延症) is linked to poorer health, work and relationship outcomes. Here are five ways to try to remedy (纠正) procrastination.

1 A five-minute start

Five minutes is nothing — it's just three hundred seconds. It's the length of a song or a TV commercial. Pick up a project you've been putting off and spare just 300 seconds of your time to do it. After a while, the momentum (动力) of beginning the task will push you forward.

2 Set goals and rewards

During the day, set goals and rewards. Each time you achieve a goal, you earn the reward: a short break, a funny YouTube video or something else.Make sure you select a time to review your progress and adjust your targets accordingly.

3 Be good to yourself — me today versus me tomorrow

Sometimes, when you find yourself buried in work, you are upset with yourself for not having started earlier. Imagine a conversation, between ―you today and ―you tomorrow.

4 I was there — witnessing accountability (责任制)

 Consider going on a diet: Is there more pressure if you don't tell a soul, or if you announce it to all your friends, with strict rules to follow if you are invited to dinner? It seems an obvious way of making you feel guilty, but it can also be highly effective.

5 Set creative punishments — negative consequences

Make the consequences of inaction so unbearable that you have no choice but to get busy now. You could write a note to someone that you don't like. Give the note to a friend with strict instructions to mail the note if you do not achieve your goal. The more you dislike the other party, the stronger the motivation to get the task done.

Procrastination is a silent killer of dreams.By understanding and fixing your procrastination, you'll discover you jump-start many areas of your life.

If everything looks okay, do the problem again and compare the result of the second try to what you've got on the first try.

Why you shouldn't punish your kids for lying

    Getting your children to stop lying is challenging. There are many influences (TV, movies, video games and some great books) in which lies are common. Children see parents lie to others, if only to be polite. Most parents add to that with tales about the lives and activities of Santa Claus or the Tooth Fairy, or to lessen fears. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

    The most common reactions to children who lie are explaining why it is wrong and punishment. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} Here are three better tools supported by research to use instead.

    PRAISE: You could ask your child to say something that happened at school that is true. When your child obeys, praise him enthusiastically. Be specific: {#blank#}3{#/blank#} and give your child a hug or a high five. Aim for one or two interactions (互动) like this a day. If you happen to "catch" your child in a lie, say something like, "That is not true and could get you in trouble outside of the home."

    MODEL: Explicitly tell the truth. This could be about something that happened when you were a child or something that happened during the day. It need not be dramatic. Another option is to play a game at dinner. Each person tells one thing that was true that day. Again, give a little praise to the child who normally lies if she plays along.

    DECREASE PUNISHMENT AND MORALIZING: They are unlikely to change behavior or develop the conduct you want.{#blank#}4{#/blank#} Rather, use very mild punishment (light scolding, short loss of privilege, a brief time-out). More severe punishments (shouting, taking away something for a week, hitting) are not more effective in actually changing the frequency of lying.

    {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Usually they can be dropped by then. It is unlikely that lying will be completely removed, but with the right encouragement, k can be dramatically lessened.

    Use a nightlight. With a nightlight, if you awake from a nightmare, you'll be able to see familiar things and remember where you are.

    Keep your door open. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} If you are scared, get up and find someone for reassurance (安心). You're never too old for a hug!

    What if the nightmares don't go away?

    Most of the time, nightmares are not a big problem. It often helps to tell a trusted adult about your bad dreams. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Sometimes it helps to keep a dream journal, a notebook in which you describe the dreams you can remember. If you have frequent nightmares, you and your parents might want to see a doctor to help you deal with your bad dreams.

If he refuses to listen and continues arguing, step out of the room and allow time for both of you to settle down. Do not scold him or shout back.
