I'm Martha. My middle school had a tradition carried out every year during the eighth-grade graduation: a beautiful gold and green jacket was given as a prize to the student who had kept the highest grades for eight years. I was fourteen and in the eighth grade. I had been a straight A student since the first grade and I had looked forward very much to owning that jacket.

One afternoon when I was on my way to the gym, I suddenly remembered my P.E. shorts were left in the bag under my desk. So I went back and get them. I was almost back at my classroom door when I heard voices raised in anger as if in some sort of argument. I recognized the voices: Mr. Smith, my history teacher, and Mr. Brown, my math teacher. They seemed to be arguing about me.

"I refuse to do it! I don't care who her father is. Her grades don't even begin to compare to Martha's!" That was Mr. Smith and he sounded very angry. Mr. Brown's voice sounded calm and quiet. "Look. Joann's father is not only on the Board (董事会), he owns the only store in town…"

The pounding in my ears kept out the rest of the words, only a word here and there got through. "…Martha is Mexican…impossible…won't do it…" To this day I don't remember if I got in trouble in P.E. for being late or how I made it through the rest of the afternoon.

The next day I was told by the headmaster that there had been a change in policy this year that whoever was awarded the jacket would be charged fifteen dollars and if the prize winner was unable to pay the money it would be given to the next one in line. That was unfair! I cried all the way home, so by the time I got home, my eyes were red and puffy (肿大的). I went to Dad, who was working in the bean field. He saw my shadow and looked up.

    In 1945, a 12-year-old boy saw a beautiful brooch(胸针) in a shop window that set his heart racing. But the price—five dollars—was too high for Reuben Earle. Five dollars would buy almost a week's food for his family.

    Reuben couldn't ask his father for the money. Everything his father made through fishing went to his mother, Dora. Slim and beautiful, she was the center of the home, the glue that held it together. The housework was never-ending, and she struggled to feed and clothe their five children but she was happy as her family and their well-being were all she cared about.

    Nevertheless, he opened the shop's weathered(风化的) door and went inside. Standing proud and straight in his flour-sack(面粉袋改做的) shirt and washed-out trousers, he told the shopkeeper what he wanted, adding ,"But I don't have the money right now. Can you please hold it for me for some time?"

    "I'll try," the shopkeeper smiled. "People around here don't usually have that kind of money to spend on things. It should keep for a while."

    Reuben respectfully touched his worn cap and walked out. He would raise the money and not tell anybody, for he thought Mum would get surprised when she saw that brooch. On hearing the sound of hammering from a side street, Reuben suddenly had an idea that he could raise money by selling the used nail bags(装钉子的麻袋). People built their own homes in Bay Roberts, using nails bought in bags from a local factory. Sometimes the used bags were thrown away at the construction site, and Reuben knew he could sell them back to the factory for five cents a piece.

    That day he sold two nail bags and hid the money in a rusty soda tin(汽水罐).

    Once there was an emperor(皇帝)in the Far East who was growing old and knew it was coming time to choose his successor (继承者). Instead of choosing one of his own children, he decided to do something different.

    He called all the young people together one day. He said, "It's time for me to step down and to choose the next emperor. I've decided to choose one of you. "The kids were shocked! But the emperor continued, "I'm going to give each of you a special seed(种子). I want you to go home, plant the seed, water and come back here one year from today with what you've grown from this one seed. I will then judge the plants you bring, and the one I choose will be the next emperor!"

One boy named Ling was there that day and he, like the others, received a seed. Back home, he planted the seed in a pot and watered it carefully. Every day he would watch to see if it had grown.

    After three weeks, some of the other youths began to talk about their seeds and the plants that were beginning to grow. Ling kept checking his seed, but nothing ever grew. Three weeks, four weeks went by. Still nothing. He felt like a failure.

    Six months went by, everyone else had trees and tall plants, but he had nothing. Ling didn't say anything to his friends. However, he just kept waiting for his seed to grow.

    A year finally went by and all the youths brought their plants to the emperor for inspection. Ling didn't want to go, but his mother encouraged him to go and to be honest about what happened. Ling knew his mother was right. He took his empty pot to the palace.

    When Ling arrived, he was amazed at the variety of plants grown by all the other youths. He put his empty pot on the floor and many of the other kids laughed at him. A few felt sorry for him and just said, "Hey, nice try."

    "It would hardly be a baseball glove,"I reasoned with myself. "A woman like Mrs. Long wouldn't know much about baseball." Since she was old and weak, I also ruled out the bicycle, for how could she handle such a large item.

    On my last Saturday at work, Mrs. Long said, "At Christmas you come to the door and collect the present." These words clinched(确定)my guess. Since she was going to have the present in her house and handle it herself, unquestionably she was giving me a pair of ice skates.

    I became so convinced of this that I could imagine myself upon the skates and the excitement they brought me. As the cold days of November arrived and ice began to form on the ponds, I began to try my luck on the ice. " Get away from that ice! " a man shouted. " It's not strong enough yet."

    As Christmas approached it was with difficulty that I restrained (抑制) myself from reporting to Mrs. Long and demanding my present. On the 21st of December, icy weather froze all the ponds so that boys who already had ice skates were able to use them. My longing to possess mine became overpowering.

    So the next day I could control myself no longer and presented myself at Mrs. Long's door. "I've been waiting for you," she said with a smile.
