For several billion years after the “Big Bang”, the earth was still just a cloud of dust.{#blank#}5{#/blank#} it was to become was {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(certain) until between 4.5 and 3.8 billion years ago when the dust settled into a solid globe. The earth became so {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(violence) that it was not clear {#blank#}8{#/blank#}the shape would last or not. It exploded loudly with fire and rock. They were in time {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(produce) carbon dioxide, nitrogen, water vapour and other gases, which were to make the earth's atmosphere. What is even more important is that as the earth cooled down, water began to appear on {#blank#}10{#/blank#} surface.

    Kids who use media in unhealthy ways may have problems {#blank#}1{#/blank#}relationships, conduct and other emotional symptoms, lead author of a US new study warned.

    A study of the University of Michigan (UM){#blank#}2{#/blank#} (release) recently on its website found that how children use the devices, rather than how much time they spend on them,{#blank#}3{#/blank#} (be) the strongest predictor of emotional or social problems connected with screen {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(addict ).

    The study revealed that {#blank#}5{#/blank#}matters most is whether screen use causes problems in other areas of life or has become{#blank#}6{#/blank#}all-consuming activity.

    Some of the warning {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (sign) include: if screen time interferes with daily activities, causes conflict for the child or in the family, or is the only activity {#blank#}8{#/blank#}brings the child joy. Though much research{#blank#}9{#/blank#} (exist) on adolescents and screen use, this is considered as the first tool to measure how addicted children are to screen media. It will be a{#blank#}10{#/blank#} (value) tool for parents, clinicians and researchers.

    Gabi Rizea only discovered his talent for woodcarving three years ago, and has since put{#blank#}1{#/blank#} to good use, saving dozens of old tree stumps (树桩) from {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (remove) by turning them into impressive works of art.

    Rizea became a woodcarver{#blank#}3{#/blank#} (complete) by accident. Three years ago, after buying himself a new chainsaw (链锯), he{#blank#}4{#/blank#} (start) “playing” with it on a block of wood. He tried carving a human face into the wood, and to his surprise, it turned out pretty good. Today, he is so good at woodcarving that his home city allows him to work his magic on old tree stumps and so far about 40 works of art{#blank#}5{#/blank#}(create) in the local parks.

    “In 99% of the cases, the wood just doesn't match my ideas,” he said in an interview. “I first have to remove all the rotten parts, and sometimes{#blank#}6{#/blank#} is left isn't enough for my designs.”

    Following his recent rise to fame, Rizea has been asked by many{#blank#}7{#/blank#} (city), including the capital of Romania to transform their old tree trunks {#blank#}8{#/blank#} works of art. He promised to honor their requests, but he will never repeat any of the artworks{#blank#}9{#/blank#} (find) in his home city.

    In spite of his obvious talent, the Romanian {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (art) recently got into art school in order to fully master woodcarving.

The Best Book I've Ever Read

    Frankly, I have read nearly all of the great works of literature, but no book has ever impressed me as deeply or directly {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Joel Stein's Man Made: A Stupid Quest for Masendinity.

    Haven't we all, on some level, been Jewish boys in New Jersey in {#blank#}2{#/blank#} 1970s with only female friends, an Easy-Bake oven and a strong preference for show tunes? Haven't we all had a panic attack {#blank#}3{#/blank#} learning we're going to have a son, since that means we're going to have to figure out how to throw footballs, watch other people throw footballs and decide {#blank#}4{#/blank#} to be happy or sad about the results of football throwing? Haven't we all then tried to correct our lack of maleness by becoming a man, fighting fires with firefighters, {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (drive) a Lamborghini and doing three days of Army training camp? I know I have.

    The only parts I didn't fully enjoy were {#blank#}6{#/blank#} in which the author suffered horribly. After just three hours of training camp, he fainted weakly into the arms of a soldier. The film rights to Man Made have already been sold to Fox, and I hope it gets {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (turn) into a movie with George Clooney playing the Stein role, since they remind me so much of each other.

    {#blank#}8{#/blank#} this is only Stein's first book, I would already consider him as someone like David Sedaris, Dave Barry, James Thurber, Mark Twain and Abraham Lincoln. I {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (recommend) Man Made not just to all my friends and family but also to strangers on Twitter over and over again. My one fear is {#blank#}10{#/blank#} after this great achievement, Stein will lose his ability to be a cruel critic of our shallow times.

    If a little humanlike robot begged you not to shut it off, would you show sympathy?

    In an experiment {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (intend) to find out how people treat robots when they act like humans, many participants struggled to power down a begging robot named Nao. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} experiment was conducted by researchers in Germany, whose findings {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (publish) in the scientific journal PLOSOne.

    Nao, {#blank#}4{#/blank#} was designed to beg about half of the participants not to switch it off but not the other half, was used {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (measure) if his begging affected how people reacted.

    In one previous experiment, researchers found that people preferred communicating with robots with complementary (互补的) personality characteristics to {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (they) own. And since robots can exhibit social characteristics either {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (speak) with human voices or taking the shape of a human body, the research suggests that people tend to react “{#blank#}8{#/blank#} (especial) social to them.”

    The researchers said a possible {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (explain) for their results was that people regarded Nao's begging {#blank#}10{#/blank#} “a sign of making its own decision.”
