No one is born a winner. People make themselves into winners by their own 1.

I learned this lesson from an experience many years ago. I took the head 2 job at a school in Baxley, Georgia. It was a small school with a weak football program.

It was a tradition for the school's old team to play against the 3 team at the end of the spring practice. The old team had no coach, and they didn't even practice to 4 the game. Being the coach of the new team, I was excited because I knew we were going to win,5 to my disappointment, we were beaten. I couldn't believe I had got into such a situation. Thinking hard about it, I came to know that my team 6 not be the number one team in Georgia, but they were depending on me. I knew I had to change my 7 about the ability and potential (潜力).

I started doing anything I could to help them build a little pride. Most importantly, I began to treat them as winners. Instead of feeling discouraged, the members were in high spirits. That summer, when the other teams enjoyed their 8, we met every day and practiced passing and kicking the football on the school football field.

Six months 9 suffering our defeat on the spring practice field, we won our first game and our second, and continued to improve. Finally, we faced the number 10 team in the state. I felt that it would be a victory for us 11 we lost the game. But that wasn't what happened. My boys 12 the best team in Georgia, giving me one of the most exciting events of my life. All of us jumped up and down with excitement, most of them even cried.

From the experience I learn a lot about 13 the attitude of the leader can affect the members of a team. Instead of seeing my boys as losers, I pushed and encouraged them. I helped them to see themselves 14, and they built themselves into winners.

    Winners are made, not 15.

On my first day of the sixth grade, I noticed one little girl called Amy on the school bus. “Don't 1 her,” Lauren said, who sat beside me, “or they will make fun of you.”
Amy had many physical differences —lots of 2 for other kids to make fun of her. Her eyes weren't straight. Her glasses were an inch thick. And she had really ugly teeth.
Every day as we drove to school, kids would shout insults (侮辱) at Amy. “God, what a 3 face! Stop looking at me!” “Mr. Rolland (the driver)! Amy took off her 4 , and now her eyes are frightening me! Make her put them back on!” I also did that because I didn't want them to treat me the same way they treated Amy.
But while I was insulting her, my heart 5 for the girl. I could see that the insults were making her look 6 , because she was so ashamed and alone. Then I wanted to stand up for her. I just didn't know how to stop my schoolmates 7 the night of our class roller skating party.
Our whole class was there, including Amy. Amy didn't know how to 8 , but I could see how much she wanted to9 like the rest of us. So I skated over to her and took her by the hand. We began the journey together around the skating rink. She just smiled, and sometimes she would laugh in 10 .
On the school bus the next morning there was much news about Amy and me 11 together, but 12 insulted her or me. And they didn't do that for the rest of the year.
After graduation, I never heard from Amy again. However, I never 13 her and I've always 14 if I changed her life for the better. But I know for sure she changed my life. After becoming her friend, I no longer tried to impress (给…留下印象) people by trying to 15 like them. I became myself.

This morning I got an e-mail from Roy. It seems that my boy really enjoys his new life at Harvard University.  The 1 made me think of the first day when we moved into this house.

Little Roy ran around the new house with great excitement and tried to move his own things into the house such as his toys, books and clothes. 2 , his little hand knocked over(打翻)a bottle of paint on the shelf. The paint made the tidy floor and white wall a terrible mess . “Oh, my God!” My wife rushed in angrily. I looked at my son, and his small face was filled with 3 .

I 4 and held his hand, “Take it easy, Roy. Now let's do something to make it look  5 .” I took out a 6. “You see, Dad is a magician(魔术师), I can change it into a big tree.”

His mother soon helped paint some butterflies and flowers on the wall.

We spent the whole afternoon 7and laughing. The wall became a beautiful forest with plants, birds and small animals. Blue sky and white clouds were also painted by Roy. On that day, everybody in the house knew  8 special happened.

The night before Roy left for Harvard, he asked me if I still remembered the day when he had knocked over the paint. “Since then I've  9worried about making mistakes,” he continued, “I believe I can always 10ways to solve the problems.”
