College helps students dream of more than a salary

    From the earliest days of our country, education has been seen as the foundation for our future.  . Is investing in a college or university education still worth it?

    . Students who graduate from college can expect to make about 60% more than those who do not, well over a million dollars over a lifetime. But what about the benefits of college that are more difficult to measure?

College is a passport to different places, different times, and different ways of thinking 一 from learning new languages to considering the arc of human history to diving deep into the building blocks of matter. It gives students a chance to understand themselves differently.

    , One of the most important ways students learn at college is by interacting with people who are different from themselves. I recall a freshman who wasn't sure if he would ft in at a new college far away from his hometown. However, one night he found himself debating about the characteristics that define a real hero with other admitted students from around the world. , but the differences were what made the conversation exciting, and he realized how much he could learn at a place full of engaging people with a wide range of viewpoints.

    College teaches students the virtue of slowing down. No one denies the value of speed, connectivity and the virtual world in an economy that thrives (繁荣) on all three. But “thinking" is a word that is too often forgotten. College teaches students to slow down, to change information into insight and knowing into understanding. . The result is that students grow in knowledge and in wisdom for a lifetime.

    To conclude, investing in a college or university education is well worth it.

A. College introduces students to a new world

B. Yet its value is being increasingly questioned

C. It remains the same nowadays

D. It develops critical thinking

E. They had a heated discussion

F. Not everyone agreed

G. College education financially pays off

    About a year ago, I had a terribly hurtful experience where a close friend spread untruths(谎言) about me. Because I value my friendships so highly, when a friend hurts my feelings, it cuts me deeply. Perhaps it's unfair for me to hold my friends to the same standard I set for myself as a friend.{#blank#}1{#/blank#}

    Be honest with yourself.

    Often times, hurtful behaviour starts off with a small thing that you forgive quickly. You love your friend and believe she'd never hurt you on purpose. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} And slowly you realize your friend may not be the person you thought she was when you first met her. Being honest with your own feelings will help you be honest and open with her.

    {#blank#}3{#/blank#}

    As the situation unfolded(发展), I learned more about what she'd said and done. Thankfully, my cooler head won, and I realized her actions actually had nothing to do with me. I chose to let the anger go and move on with my life.

    Walk away and don't look back.

    Making the decision to leave a friendship can sometimes feel as hard as deciding to leave your marriage. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} But when that hole is open, you will soon realize that your close, real friends will close it quickly. Depression may appear as persistent unhappiness, anger, tiredness or other feelings and emotions that the individual may owe to something other than depression.

    Be sympathetic

    The most important thing is to be sympathetic.{#blank#}3{#/blank#} Listen with patience and acceptance. Let the person talk about how they're feeling no matter how sad or negative their comments are. Do not argue about their points or try to convince them to see things in a more positive light, because someone wrestling with depression does not have the ability to do so.{#blank#}4{#/blank#}

    Talk to your physician and share what's going on and ask what they suggest. It won't be the first time they have heard this, and they have resources that will be helpful. For the friend or loved one, the best thing to offer is your understanding and a sense of hope. Let them know that, they will start to feel better and see things differently once they seek help and undergo treatment.

    Support them through treatment
