This summer I travelled from noisy Beijing to Wuzhen, a beautiful village in Zhejiang Province. Unfolded before me was{#blank#}1{#/blank#}unique image of this water country—the stone bridge and the water flowing, all like fairy tales to me.

    However{#blank#}2{#/blank#} impressed me most was not the natural scenery but the scene of a grandma bathing a little baby in a wooden basin with the door open. My friends couldn't help{#blank#}3{#/blank#}(take) pictures of them. To my surprise, the grandma smiled and waved at us. All of a sudden, my heart was filled with {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (warm).

    I shared the photo and my{#blank#}5{#/blank#} (forget) experience with my friends. They were {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(simple) moved as I was, but at the same time they reminded me of the unpleasant experiences in big cities. We feel embarrassed to see people quarreling in public because they{#blank#}7{#/blank#} (step) on accidentally by strangers.

    According to a recent survey{#blank#}8{#/blank#} (make) in November 2016: 45 percent of the residents don't know the names of their neighbors; 63 percent have never devoted{#blank#}9{#/blank#} (they) to talking to their neighbors; 67 percent think that the relationship between them and their neighbors is just so-so, or even bad.

    Wouldn't it be beautiful to say hello to our neighbors who just came back {#blank#}10{#/blank#}work give them a smile?

    In 1940, four teenage boys and their dog were walking through woodland close to Lascaux, when their dog suddenly disappeared. The boys searched all around. They came to a cave and looked into the cave{#blank#}1{#/blank#} could see nothing.

    A few days later, the boys returned to the cave. They could hardly believe {#blank#}2{#/blank#}eyes. In the weak lamplight, the boys saw red horses and cows, and black bulls and deer charging across the walls of the cave, which looked so {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(frighten) that the boys jumped back in fear. Little did the boys know that they had made one of the most important{#blank#}4{#/blank#}(discover) of that century.

    The Famous Lascaux Caves consist of a large hole and{#blank#}5{#/blank#} series of connecting caves, with a natural water system. The paintings there were an especially important find because they are so numerous and so well preserved. After a few years, the caves were opened{#blank#}6{#/blank#} a tourist attraction, and 1,200 people per day came to the site{#blank#}7{#/blank#}(admire) the paintings{#blank#}8{#/blank#} (fortunate), many visitors resulted in changes in the cave's atmosphere, and green algae (水藻) began to grow around the walls. Since then, the caves {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(close) to the public in an effort to conserve the fragile paintings in this precious underground site.

    Today, the caves have computer-controlled air-conditioning and are inspected daily. Scientists hope that these precautions will prevent any{#blank#}10{#/blank#}(far) damage to the paintings.

    Saint Patrick's Day is a major holiday in Ireland, but the rest of the world has influenced its celebration as much as the Irish{#blank#}1{#/blank#} (they). Most Americans think of Saint Patrick's Day as a big party{#blank#}2{#/blank#}(center) around drinking alcohol. But its {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (origin) in Ireland were religious, says Mike Cronin, a professor of Irish history with Boston College of Massachusetts.

    Saint Patrick lived in Ireland more than 2,000 years ago. He is{#blank#}4{#/blank#} (wide) considered to have established Christianity in the country. The Church decided to honor him with a holy day. March 17, the date of his death{#blank#}5{#/blank#} (choose) in the 17lh century.

    St. Patrick is believed{#blank#}6{#/blank#}(serve) in Ireland as a Catholic Bishop (主教). The average Irish person honored March 17 quietly{#blank#}7{#/blank#}(attend) church services was the main activity. In fact, most businesses that served alcohol would close in honor {#blank#}8{#/blank#} the day. In the early 1900s, Ireland's government made St. Patrick's Day{#blank#}9{#/blank#} official holiday. By the 1960s, towns across Ireland started celebrating the holiday with parades and music.

    In Ireland today, St. Patrick's Day is a four-day public celebration {#blank#}10{#/blank#} includes parades, music, food, and games.

    I was nine years old when I leant to ride a bike. The bike was a birthday present from my uncle. You can imagine how excited I was when I saw the bike, and I {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (beg) my uncle to teach me how to ride it right away. However, before I got on the bike, I felt{#blank#}2{#/blank#}(extreme) nervous and I was afraid that I would fall off and hurt myself. My uncle held onto the seat and helped me to get on the bike. While I was riding, he was running along beside me, holding the seat {#blank#}3{#/blank#} I would not fall over. I was so grateful to him for his help.

As I was practicing, I became more and more confident. Then, I heard my uncle {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (shout), "You are riding it by {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(you) now!" I was both excited and scared. I was really riding by myself, but what if I fell off? Could I use the brakes {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(stop)? As I was wondering about this, my uncle ran after me and got hold of the bike. I slowed down and came to{#blank#}7{#/blank#}stop. My heart was still beating fast when I got off the bike.{#blank#}8{#/blank#} (late) that day, having learnt how to get on the bike and get off it, I felt like I was walking on air! I am still{#blank#}9{#/blank#}(thank) to my uncle for teaching me to ride a bike{#blank#}10{#/blank#}my ninth birthday.

Happiness Is an Attitude

    The 92-year-old confident and proud lady, who is fully dressed each morning by eight o'clock, with her hair fashionably combed and makeup perfectly applied, moved to a{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(nurse) home today.

    Her husband of 70 years recently passed away, {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (make) the move necessary.

    After many hours of waiting patiently in the hall of the nursing home, she {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (smile) sweetly when told her room was ready. As she got into the elevator {#blank#}4{#/blank#} her wheelchair, I provided a description of her tiny room.

    "Mrs. Jones, you haven't seen the room….just wait."

    "That has {#blank#}6{#/blank#} to do with it," she replied. "Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. {#blank#}7{#/blank#}I like my room or not doesn't depend on how the furniture is arranged…it's {#blank#}8{#/blank#} I arrange my mind. I already decided to love it. It's a decision I make every morning when I wake up. I have a choice; I can spend the day in bed {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (recount) the difficulty I have with the parts of my body{#blank#}10{#/blank#} no longer work or get out of bed and be thankful for the ones working. Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open, I'll focus on the new day and all the happy memories I've stored away… just for this time in my life.”
