Once upon a time, a powerful king commanded his men {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (build) a public arena where crime was punished or innocence(无罪) was decided. When a person {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (accuse) of a crime, his future would be judged in the public arena.

    Usually the king sat high up on his chair. He gave {#blank#}3{#/blank#} sign and a door under him opened. The accused person stepped out into the arena. Opposite the king {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (be) two doors. The person on trial(审判) had to walk {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (direct) to these doors and open one of them. He could open whichever door he pleased. If the accused man opened one door, out came a hungry tiger, the {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (fierce)(凶猛的) in the land. The tiger immediately jumped on him and tore him into pieces as {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (punish) for his guilt. The case of the suspect was thus decided. {#blank#}8{#/blank#} , if the accused opened the other door, there came a woman. To this lady he was immediately married, in honor of his innocence.

    This was the king's method of {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (carry) out justice. Its fairness appeared perfect. The accused person could not know which door was hiding the lady. He opened either as he pleased, without knowing {#blank#}10{#/blank#} he was to be killed or married

    A young American woman worked in a school in Shanghai． {#blank#}1{#/blank#} she came to China，she knew little about the Chinese culture of language． One day on her way to school，she went to a bank {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(draw) some money．To {#blank#}3{#/blank#}surprise，the bank clerk(职员) asked her if she had had her lunch．She was surprised at such {#blank#}4{#/blank#}question because in the American culture it would mean that the bank clerk is inviting her to lunch．Between unmarried young people it can also mean the young man's interest in dating the girl．Since this bank clerk {#blank#}5{#/blank#}a stranger to the American woman，she was very puzzled(困惑的)，and quickly answered that she {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(eat) already．After this she went on to school and was even {#blank#}7{#/blank#}surprised when one of the teachers asked her the same question．

    By now she understood that it could not be an {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(invite) but was puzzled as to why they asked it．In the following days she was asked the same question again and again and she spent many hours {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(try) to work out why so many people kept asking her this．At last she thought that these people must be {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(concern) about her health．She was rather thin at the time，and she thought they must be worrying that she was not eating well!

    In fact the question like that has no real meaning at all — it is only a greeting．

    In 1969, the pollution is terrible along the Cuyahoga River near Cleveland, Ohio. It {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (be) unimaginable that it could ever be cleaned up. The river was so polluted {#blank#}2{#/blank#}it actually caught fire and burned. Now years later, this rive is one of {#blank#}3{#/blank#} most outstanding examples of environmental clean-up.

    But river wasn't changed in a few days {#blank#}4{#/blank#} even a few months. It took years of work {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (reduce) industrial pollution and clean the water. Finally, that hard work paid off and now the water in the river is {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (clean) than ever.

    Maybe you are facing an impossible situation. Maybe you have a habit {#blank#}7{#/blank#} is driving your family crazy. Possibly you drink too much or don't know how to control your credit card use. When you face such impossible situation, don't you want a quick fix and something to change immediately?

    While there are {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (amaze) stories of instant transformation, for most of us the {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (change) are gradual and require a lot of effort and work, like cleaning up a polluted river. Just be {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (patience).

    Once there lived a rich man {#blank#}1{#/blank#} wanted to do something for the people of his town. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} first he wanted to find out whether they deserved his help.

    In the centre of the main road into the town, he placed {#blank#}3{#/blank#} very large stone. Then he {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (hide) behind a tree and waited. Soon an old man came along with his cow.

    “Who put this stone in the centre of the road?” said the old man, but he did not try to remove the stone. Instead, with some difficulty he passed around the stone and continued on his way. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} man came along and did the same thing; then another came ,and another. All of them complained about the stone but not tried to remove {#blank#}6{#/blank#}. Late in the afternoon a young man came along. He saw the stone, {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (say) to himself: “The night {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (be) very dark. Some neighbors will come along later in the dark and will fall against the stone.”

    Then he began to move the stone. He pushed and pulled with all his {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (strong) to move it. How great was his surprise at last! {#blank#}10{#/blank#} the stone, he found a bag of money.

    Jackie Robinson made his debut (初次露面) with the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15,1947, and broke the color barrier {#blank#}1{#/blank#}African Americans in baseball.

    "It was the most {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (eager) expected debut in the history of the national pastime," sports author Robert wrote.     {#blank#}5{#/blank#}quietly tolerating harsh racist treatment from baseball fans and team members{#blank#}6{#/blank#}(like), Robinson rose to Rookie of the Year and proved himself to be one of the most{#blank#}7{#/blank#}(talent) and fiercest players in the game. Just two years into the Major Leagues, Robinson won the National League Most Valuable Player Award. He'd go on to play in six World Series and helped give the Dodgers {#blank#}8{#/blank#} World Series win in 1955.

    Off the field, Robinson was a forefather of the Civil Rights Movement, speaking out against {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (race) discrimination and {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (push) baseball to use its economic influence to fight against racialism.
