Chinese New Year is one of {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (important) celebrations in the Chinese calendar. It is also known as the Spring Festival because it celebrates the start of new life and the season for {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (plant) crops. 

Chinese New Year starts with the new moon on the first day of the new year and it doesn't end {#blank#}3{#/blank#} the moon is the brightest 15 days later.

Just before Chinese New Year, people clean the houses. They decorate them with pieces of paper with words meaning "Happiness"and "Wealth" written on them. Some couplets (对联) {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (put) on the front door. On Chinese New Year's Eve, families get together and have an unusual meal {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (happy). Of course, the popular food is dumplings. 

Chinese New Year lasts fifteen days, so during these days, people always visit their relatives and friends. It is a good time to relax {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (they). Children always feel excited because they can get some {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (luck) money wrapped in red envelopes.

One of the most interesting parts of Chinese New Year {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (be) the dragon dance or lion dance.{#blank#}9{#/blank#} dragons made out of paper, silk and bamboo are really lively. Chinese people think of dragons as helpful, friendly animals which symbolize long life {#blank#}10{#/blank#} wisdom. At the same time people also like to set off fireworks to welcome the new year.

Have you ever heard of the US Labour Day? It is one of{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(important) festivals in America. The first Labour Day parade{#blank#}2{#/blank#} (hold) in New York City in 1882. Thousands of workers walked through the streets to show the strength of labor organizations. In 1894, the government made Labour Day a national holiday{#blank#}3{#/blank#}they wanted to create a holiday for the working people.

Though the US Labour Day is a public holiday, people only have{#blank#}4{#/blank#}day off. On that day, there are all kinds of holiday{#blank#}5{#/blank#}(activity). Most Americans take{#blank#}6{#/blank#}(they) last summer vacations around this time. Some people take trips to the beach and have picnics there, some have outdoor barbecues* with their family and friends, and others choose{#blank#}7{#/blank#}(attend) public events. For many students, they usually have parties{#blank#}8{#/blank#}(excited) before the new school year begins. They sing, dance and enjoy the delicious food. {#blank#}9{#/blank#}relaxing they are! Labor Day is also the beginning of the professional and college football season in the US.

The US Labour Day is{#blank#}10{#/blank#} the first Monday in September. Why don't the US celebrate in May, like the rest of the world? One of the reasons is to add a holiday to bridge the long gap between Independence Day in July and Thanksgiving in November. 

When it comes to learning a foreign language, most people would choose English. Millions of people born in non-English speaking countries learn it just from textbooks and spend hours studying English grammar. However, these are the wrong ways to learn English. Let's look at some good ways. 

English media such as music, videos and TV shows are helpful. I come from a small country in Europe. When I was a little boy, there were few local TV shows or songs in my hometown. So my friends and I almost only watched English TV shows and listened to English songs. This, along with the courses we were taking at school, helped speed up our process of learning English. 

Start making conversations in English when you can understand what you hear. While it may seem strange at first, but it would get more natural if you stick to it. I spent a lot of time talking with my friends in English. When we finished primary school we could speak English fluently (流利地). 

I learnt three other languages when I was in college. Now I can confidently say that the only way to truly master a language is to live as though the language were your mother tongue (语言). So just forget about your textbooks and try acting like you live outside of China. Find ways to expose (使接触) yourself to English as much as possible. It will not only make you a better learner but also give you a fresh view of the language.

 When visiting the southern Chinese city of Liuzhou, the first thing people notice is quietness. What is {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(找不到的) is the continuous noise of fuel vehicles(燃油车辆) in most big cities. It is because {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (差不多)50% of the cars sold in Liuzhou in 2022 were electric vehicles (EVs, 电动汽车), making the city of about four hundred {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (百万) people the biggest EV market in the world. Not only that, the {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(自然的) environment of the city is also wonderful.

 Liuzhou' s first move was to let people know more about EVs. SAIC-GM-Wuling carried out a free 10-month test-drive plan in 2017. More than 15,000 people took the carmaker' s Baojun E100 for a trial. The trial was so popular that {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (机会) ran out within minutes, and 70% of test-drivers bought one of the vehicles. Wuling then studied people's needs and driving habits to{#blank#}6{#/blank#}(提升) their products.

 At the beginning, people had many worries about EVs, such as safety or the problem about charging. {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (事实上), it's very comfortable to use EVs. Free parking and tens of thousands of charge points are on hand for drivers. People have realized not only does it save money and {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(能源) to drive electric cars but also there are many charge points for convenience. Besides, the air is becoming cleaner after more and more EVs hit the road.

"Guiding people towards electric cars is not easy," said Jochen Siebert, who {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(设法完成) to achieve the popularity. But officials of Guangxi are also trying to make the use of EVs more popular in other cities, {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(包括) in other parts of China. "Cities should support the light-weight and small vehicles coming into the city as those vehicles can fit everywhere and don' t use too much power," Siebert said. "That should be the future."

With a history of more than 1，000 years in China，the oil﹣paper umbrella used to be a tool to keep out the rain for the Chinese. It's so named because the umbrella's surface is made of paper brushed with tung oil（桐油）. 

Although the oil﹣paper umbrella is now no longer commonly used for rainy days，it has never disappeared from people's lives. For example，it is still a symbol of romance in many places. For the Yao people living in the southwest China，an oil﹣paper umbrella plays an important role during a marriage proposal（求婚）. When a Yao man's relative visits a Yao woman's family to propose marriage，the relative will bring a red oil﹣paper umbrella. If the woman accepts the proposal，she will take the umbrella and hang 12 small cloth bags on the umbrella's ribs（伞架）. Then the relative will return the umbrella to the man to tell the good news. 

The oil﹣paper umbrella made in Fenshui，a town in Luzhou，Sichuan Province is world﹣famous. To make the umbrella，a craftsperson must complete more than 70 steps. It takes about half a month to make an oil﹣paper. The umbrella is both beautiful and durable（耐用的）. It can be opened and closed at least 3，000 times. Its surface won't divide from ribs even if the umbrella is put in water for 24 hour. 

Bi Liufu，a native of Fenshuiling，another town in Luzhou，has been creating oil﹣paper umbrellas for more than 40 years. He has won many prizes in national and international craft competitions. For Bi，making umbrellas is a lifelong goal rather than a way to make a living.
