Have you ever had trouble sleeping in a new place?

    Lots of people do. And now researchers from Brown University in Rhode Island think they know why. They found that one-half of the brain "remains more awake" than the other half when people are trying to sleep in a new place.

The sleep findings were reported in Current Biology by Brown University. In their report, the researchers said many people report they have a harder time sleeping the first night at a hotel or other places outside their home. They call it "first-night influence". "In Japan they say, 'If you change your bed, you can't sleep,'" said Yuka Sasaki, one of the report's writers. "You don't sleep very well in a new place. We all know about it."

    The researchers measured brain waves (测量脑波) for 35 volunteers over two nights in a laboratory. The two nights were a week apart (间隔). They found during the first night the left half of the brain was more active than the right half. This was during the first deep-sleep period, the researchers said.

    Sasaki said a lot of questions remain.

    Researchers did not keep measuring brain waves all night long. So, they don't know if the left half keeps "watch" all night, or whether it "works in shifts (轮换) with the right half later in the night". They also do not know why the brain activity, at least during the first period of deep sleep, is always on the left half.

    For some, this research may be calming. It is good to know that our brain is "looking out for us" in a new place. But it may not help with sleep. That brain activity, at least according to this new research, makes it harder to get the sleep people need to wake up well rested in the morning.

    China isn't well known for its science fiction films, but recently a new film called The Wandering Earth has become a great success. It has earned over $697 million worldwide. It tells an amazing story of the Earth in danger, along with exciting scenes of spaceships and outer space.

    The Wandering Earth is based on a story by Liu Cixin. In the story, the sun was dying out, people all around the world worked together to move Earth out of the solar system and sail Earth to a new star system. The film began with the early life of a young boy who was born just after the project started. The engineers pushed Earth away and built underground cities that were vast enough for all the other humans to live in. Yet the 2500 years' journey came with all kinds of dangers. In order to save the humans, a group of young people came out and fought hard for the planet.

    China is playing an increasingly important part in the film industry. Its growing middle class has seen the rise of film market across the country, and Chinese viewers have become an important part of film industry. Hollywood Projects like Iron Man 3 specifically filmed more scenes in China for its market. Chinese film industry is keeping growing. Just as Americans want to get into the Chinese market, Chinese filmmakers are looking for the way to the international market.

    According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Wandering Earth is China's "first space" film. Chinese science fiction writer, Anna Wu, says science fiction "is a new challenge for the Chinese film industry." Some Chinese filmmakers have achieved a great success at this kind of film, but most of them still have a long way to go.

    Still, Wu notes that within China, "Not all the science fiction films have had success. It still takes time to accept science fictions, and that with the development of our country, people are getting busier, wealthier and more stressed," which creates a perfect environment for this new kind of film and television. The Wandering Earth, she says, is a good example. "I also care about the money it earns, which will affect the future of Chinese science fiction films."

     The world itself is becoming much smaller by using modern traffic and morden communication means (工具). Life today is much easier than it was hundreds of years ago, but it has brought new problems. One of the biggest problems is pollution. To pollute means to make things dirty. Pollution comes in many ways. We see it, smell it, drink it and even heart it.

    Man has been polluting the earth. The more people have, the more pollution becomes. Many years ago, the problem was nor so serious because there were not so many people. When the land was used up or the river was dirty in one place, man moved to another place. But this is no longer true.

    Man is now slowly polluting the whole world.

    Air pollution is still the most serious. It's bad for all living things in the world, but it is not the only one kind of pollution, Water pollution kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us angry more easily.

    Many countries are making rules to fight pollution. They stop people from burning coal in houses and factories in the city, and from putting dirty smoke into the air. Pollution by sulfur dioxide (So₂) is now the most dangerous kind of air pollution. It is caused by heavy traffic. We are sure that if there are fewer people driving, there will be less air pollution.

    The earth is our home. We must take care of it. That means keeping the land, water and air clean. And we must pay attention to the rise in pollution at the same time.

    My name is Wei Hua and I'm a sporting robot of the 23rd century. I'm clever at high flying exercises. I jump from spaceships and as I fall, I turn, dive, circle and dance until I softly land as close as I can to the finishing line.

    Robot competitions in the 23rd century are truly a popular sport. Fans from all over China watch their hand—held TVs when a competition comes on. Last time I took part in the 78th Olympics and I won the silver medal for my performance. This year I was very proud to be chosen again. I wanted to meet robots from other countries and explore ideas about our sport. However, my programmer fell ill the week before we were leaving. It was very painful for her and I felt very scared. I didn't feel so confident that I would win.

    The day of the competition was rather cold for my legs and my special oil began to freeze. I stopped for a moment(which I shouldn't) before I jumped from the starting place on a little spaceship, then I began my performance. At the correct moment I tried to open my parachute(降落伞)but there was a problem. It only opened a little. I began to fall faster and faster so that I could not turn, dive, circle or dance. My heart stopped beating as I landed heavily on a mountain covered with snow.

    This is why I am writing to you from my hospital bed with two broken legs and a weak head. I did not win anything at the Olympics after all. I need the factory to build me two new legs and an even bigger head. Then I will be able to compete once more. Let's hope for greater success in the next Olympics!
