If you want to become a better reader, what should you know about speed of reading?

Some people read very rapidly(快速地),while others read very slowly. But which one is better?

The rapid reader may be a good reader when he reads a storybook for fun. But he may not be able to slow down enough to read directions carefully. He may read so rapidly that he does not take time to understand fully the ideas and information which are important to remember.

The slow reader may be a good reader when he reads directions for making something. But he may spend too much time in reading a simple story which is meant to be enjoyed but is not important enough to be remembered.

So, you see, either a rapid reader or a slow reader is not really a good one. If you wish to become a better reader, here are four important things to remember about speed of reading.

1  Knowing why you are reading will often help you to know whether to read rapidly or slowly.

2  Some things should be read slowly throughout. Examples are directions for making or doing something, science and history books, and Maths problems. You must read such things slowly or remember each important step and understand each important idea.

3  Some things should be read rapidly throughout. Examples are simple stories for enjoyment, letters from friends and bits of news from hometown papers.

4  In some of your reading, you must change your speed from fast to slow and slow to fast, as you go along. You will need to read certain pages rapidly and then slow down and do more careful reading when you come to important ideas.

Hello, everyone. I'm Nancy and I like reading. On road trips, I always take some books to keep myself busy. These are four of my favorite books.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time

This children's book is interesting, exciting, sad and happy all at the same time and makes you think seriously. It tells the story of a 15-year-old boy with autism (自闭症). The book opens a window into his world, his thoughts, his hopes and his dreams.

Matilda

It's now a film and show at the theater, but we can't forget the book. Matilda is about a cute little girl who is very clever and loves to read. She goes to school and meets the very scary Miss Trunchbull, but thankfully makes friends with a kind teacher. The book will make you cry one moment and laugh the next.

Charlotte's Web

Charlotte's Web tells the story of friendship (友谊) between a pig and a spider (蜘蛛). It's a simple story but it teaches us about love, life and death (死亡). If you haven't read it, give it a try.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

I read the book, watched the film and listened to the tape. The exciting story happens in a place called Narnia. As you read it, you'll feel like you're really there. You'll lose yourself in the adventures (冒险经历) of the four children and the characters they meet.

 阅读下列短文, 从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中选出最佳选项。

Sugar painting is a traditional Chinese form of art. Just as its name suggests, the paintings are made from. sugar. They can be either regarded as works of art or eaten as desserts. In and around China's southwestern Sichuan Province, it is usual to see. some folk artists producing sugar paintings along the streets, in the parks and around the schools.

The art of sugar painting goes back to the Ming Dynasty, about 400 to 600 years ago. At that time, the upper- class people used sugar paintings as offerings to gods. Some common patterns were tigers, lions, dragons and so on. Later it became popular among the common people. In the Qing Dynasty, sugar painting became more popular. Many people made a living by making and

selling sugar paintings as desserts. The patterns for sugar paintings included all kinds of things that people liked.

Sugar painting is very different from the other forms of painting. First, the artist doesn't use brushes, oil paints or paper to create paintings. instead, the artist uses brown sugar or white sugar as the main material, a spoon and a shovel as the tools, and a marble slab as the" paper". When the painting is done, the artist uses a wooden stick to hold it. Second. the artist has to produce the work very quickly, since it's nearly impossible to paint if the hot sugar cools down. Thira, the sugar painting is finished in one stroke, so the artist should design a pattern and the order of stroke in mind before any action. And the artist must follow the order while making the painting, or he/ she will ruin it. To know the whole process very well, the painter has to practice hundreds of times in the first place.

We all know that it is important to be honest, but who can honestly say that they've never told a lie(谎言)? Perhaps we comfort ourselves that most of the lies are "white lies". For example, someone cooks a terrible meal for us, but we lie and say that the food is"delicious". Or if a friend asks us what we think of his or her new haircut, we say"It's great!", even if we think it's awful.

One of the main reasons that we tell a white lie is to try to make others feel better. However, when we lie and say that someone's haircut looks good, or when we say that we love a meal that we secretly don't like, are we really hoping to improve the situation for someone else?

Another reason for telling a white lie is to give encouragement. For example, when your friend asks you what you think of his or her singing, you say it's"wonderful", although you think it's not good. Perhaps your friend wants some frank opinions from you to improve.

Finally, we may also tell a white lie when we want to protect others from bad news. If you have a bad day, do you tell your parents about it, or do you hide your tears and lie that your day is"fine"? When you tell a lie, don't you think your parents would want to listen to you and understand your feelings?

Perhaps the meal you said was"delicious" will be served every time you visit. Your friend may not trust your opinion again if he or she found out you had lied about his or her"wonderful" singing. Others couldn't truly understand you if you only share good news instead of bad news.
