Popeye the Sailor first became a popular cartoon in the 1930s. The sailor in that cartoon ate lots of spinach (菠菜) to make him strong. People watched him, and they began to buy and eat a lot more spinach. Popeye helped sell 33 per cent more spinach than before! Spinach became a necessary part of many people's diets. Even some children who hated the taste began to eat the vegetable.

    Many people thought that the iron in spinach made Popeye strong, but this is not-true. Spinach does not have any more iron than any other green vegetables.

    People only thought spinach had a lot of iron because the people who studied the food made a mistake. In the 1890s, a group of people studied what was inside vegetables. This group said that spinach had ten times more iron than it did. The group wrote the number wrong, and everyone accepted it.

    Today, we know that the little iron there is in spinach cannot make a difference in how strong a person is. However, spinach does have something else which the body needs—folic acid.

    It is interesting to point out that folic acid can help make a person strong. Maybe it was really the folic acid that made Popeye strong all along.

    Baseball is my favourite sport. It is fun to play, and it is fun to watch.

    I went to my first baseball game with my grandparents when I was 6. It was really wonderful.

    We had a good time. I was happy to be with my grandparents. My grandfather made me love the game.

    My dad knew I loved baseball, so he gave me a baseball on my ninth birthday.

    When I was 12, my friend came to me and asked me to join his team and play baseball. From then on(从那时起), I got to learn more about baseball. I practised a lot and learned how to play better.

    My favourite player is Derrek Lee. Derrek Lee joined the Chicago Cubs in 2004. That year was a good year for him, but 2005 was his best year. One of my favourite things about Derrek Lee is that he is a very nice person. He never shouts at others. He always has a big smile on his face. He seems happy all the time.

    Lion was the King of the Jungle(灌木丛). One day, Giraffe told Lion, "Rabbit says he is the new King of the Jungle." "What?" Lion was very angry. He went to meet Rabbit. The other animals followed him to see what he would do. "Rabbit," said Lion, "Why do you say that you are the new King of the Jungle?" "Oh, but it's true," said Rabbit. "I'm faster and cleverer than you. We can have a competition（竞赛）.""All right," said Lion.

    Rabbit took Lion to a deep ravine (深谷). He said, "If I fly down to the ravine faster than you, I am faster and cleverer than you. So I go, or you will go first?" "Of course I will go first," said Lion, "I am the King of the Jungle!" He then threw himself into the deep ravine. Rabbit smiled and said to the other animals. "I am your new king now. I am faster and cleverer than Lion." The other animals didn't understand.

    "Lion was stupid! Anyone will die after jumping into the ravine!"

    Now many boys wear the same(同样的)clothes as girls, and some of them have long hair. So sometimes it's difficult to tell whether(是否)they are boys or girls.

    One Sunday morning, I go for a walk with my grandfather in the park near my house. After a while, my grandfather is tired, so he sits down on a bench(长椅)near the pool.

    "Oh," my grandfather says to the person with long curly hair next to him on the bench. "Can you see the person with long hair on the other side of the pool? Is it a boy or a girl?"

    "Which one?" asks the person with long curly hair.

    "The one who is eating a hamburger near the pool," says my grandfather.

    "He's a boy," says the person, "he's my son, Li Yu."

    "Oh," my grandfather says, "I'm sorry. I don't know you are his mother. "

    "No, I'm not his mother. I'm his father. "

Everyone knows that exercise is important. We all need to exercise. Doctors say it is good for us. It makes our heart and body strong. Children who often exercise are more clever. This means they do better in tests and schoolwork than those who don't exercise. There are many ways to exercise. 

You can walk, run, swim, skate or play ball games. Make sure you exercise in the following ways. You have to like what you're doing. Exercise enough but not too much. It's best to exercise twice each week. Thirty minutes each time is enough. Try all kinds of things until you find one, two or even three sports that are right for you. 

You can exercise at fitness centers（健身中心）. They have a lot of equipment （设备） there. The equipment will help exercise your arms, legs and other parts of your body to make you fit. Some people buy equipment for their homes. But it is very expensive. 

Exercise can be fun. Friends can exercise together at a fitness center, or they can play sports together. How do you exercise?
